Hello everyone. My name is Reggie and I'm a new member to this group. I'm really excited about the group and the book discussions held. I'm still trying to learn the rules, features & options on how to post on this website. I've never done this before so please bear with me for a few moments, just a little nervous as to where to start. I look forward to talking to everyone.

Hi Lyn,
Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm still trying to learn the features and rules on how these discussions work! I am excited and looking forward to talking to you soon. Any help, or recommendations, I would appreciate it as to any of your prior discussions on this title Crusades would be great. I'm not sure were to start or search.

message 14: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) Hi

I am Paula, I have a interest in the Medieval to Early Modern period mainly in Scotland but also England and Europe to a slightly lesser degree. Ill read any fiction / non fiction on this period especially relating to Edward I and also John of Gaunt. I have to confess a dislike of the Tudor period:) or should I say Henry VIII onwards until James I and VI. Looking forward to getting new recommendations for books

Hi Paula! Welcome to the group :)
I love the diversity of interests in our members.
I haven't really read anything about John of Gaunt or Edward I but would love to. Do you have any favorites from that time period?
There are a lot of Tudor Lovers in this group (myself included) so it's neat to see someone who isn't one. Is there a reason why you don't like them?
Looking forward to chatting :)

message 16: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) I think my dislike or reluctance to read anything about them probably stems from 2 things - 1st - When I was younger I read a "reasonable amount" about them and probably became saturated and 2nd there has been a "revival" regarding the Tudors over the last few years and other era's are over looked. I cannot even bring myself to watch movies about them :) although I will confuse to watching the Tudors! despite its historical inaccuries.

Fiction wise the best I have read regarding John of Gaunt is Katherine by Anya Seton. There is little non fiction regarding John of Gaunt that I have found. Edward I again best I have found so far is
A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britain by Marc Morris. I m always on the look out for more

message 17: by Francine (new)

Francine Hi,
My name is Francine. I love history, especially British kings/queens and ancient Egyptian. I read someone's post about reading someone's book before reading James Patterson's King Tut. Which book was that? I can't seem to find the post. Also, just finished reading Cleopatra's Daughter which was quite good as well. Hope to get to know everyone.
Thanks,
Francine

Paula - I laughed at your confession about watching the Tudors. As many of us have said over the threads, it is our "guilty pleasure". As you said, none of us watch it for the historical accuracy, for sure, but it sure helps pass a cold winter night!!

I have Katherine on my 2010 TBR list. I know we have our group read for Jan - Feb picked already, but you should nominate it for a future group read.

Welcome Francine - It is good to have you in the group. The book thread you are looking for is the Book Recommendation for Egyptian Royalty. In it, one of our members, Sawyer, talks about reading Moran's Cleo book ( I think Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran is the book being referred to) before reading The Murder of King Tut by James Patterson. I have both of them on my TBR pile.

Looking forward to getting to know you!

message 20: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments OOPS , I havent been on this thread for a while.
Welcome to the group Reggie , Diana , Rhonda , Paula and Francine.

I also have Katherineon my shelf to read in 2010. I hope we get to read it as a group. It has high rating reviews/stars on here and on Amazon.

message 21: by Francine (new)

Francine Okay, thank you. Please bare with me as I am new to this and I hope I don't make a mistake. I have read Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran and like it a lot. I am waiting for King Tut by James Patterson from the library. I also watch the Tudors. I love the costuming despite the inaccuracies. Bertrice Small is also a favorite of mine as is Phillipa Gregory.

message 22: by Kate. (new)

Kate. | 174 comments Hi Francine , what are Bertrice Small's books like ?
I enjoy Michelle Moran and Phillipa Gregory too.
Have you read the White Queen ?

Welcome to the group Francine. We are currently reading The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George and our new group read The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman starts January 1, 2010. There are lots of Michelle Moran and Phillipa Gregory fans here, as well as fans of other authors and Royalty groups. I'm sure you will find lots to interest you. Look forward to getting to know you through the discussions.

message 24: by Francine (new)

Francine Kate,
I have my name down for the book White Queen at the library but it's a small town library and very, very slow! I am reading The Virgin Queen by Jeane Westin. It's okay, about Elizabeth I's Court but I've read better.

message 26: by Kirsty (last edited Jan 05, 2010 09:06AM) (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 8 comments Hi, I'm Kirsty and I'm new to the group :)

Have to say that at school I wasn't a fan of history, except for the Ancient Egyptians and the Tudors, more specifically Henry VIII and his wives. I've read a couple of Phillipa Gregory's books, which has made me want to find out more about other royals. There are so many books out there on various monarchs/other royals that I wasn't sure where to start and so when I saw this group I figured it would be perfect for me!

I tend to get behind on posts as I have a pretty hectic life, so please don't think I've lost interest if I don't post for a while! I'm looking forward to browsing through the topics!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Kristy! I'm new to the group as well.

I have always been fascinated with the glamorous lifestyle of the European royals. I'm looking forward for the recommendations and discussions on the subject.

Paula, like Lyn I also laughed at your post on The Tudors show! We're all starting to sound the same with our grumbling over inaccuracies while drooling over the beautiful people and costumes! I have Katherine on my TBR list hopefully for this year. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

Kimberly (kimberly_b) Hi Everyone! I just joined the group today at the suggestion of my friend Kate who is already a member. I would love to join the discussion of The Sunne in Splendour. My reading is already packed this month, but I'm planning on starting it end Jan./first part of Feb. I see several familiar faces here :)

Kimberly (kimberly_b) I hope no one minds, but I added Queen of Camelot to our group books. It's my favorite King Arthur book and one of my all-time favorites! :D

Seems like it, yes :) I feel like I need to learn more about history at the moment, especially the history of the British monarchy... it's my heritage after all!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 227 comments Katherine I really enjoyed and hope y'all do too.

Oh I have been curious about that book Susanna! Would you mind telling us your opinion on it in a thread or have you written a review?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 227 comments I don't seem to have reviewed it.

It was a bestseller in the 50s (think it came out in '54), and is based on the love story of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford (Chaucer's sister-in-law - Chaucer pokes his head in from time to time in this novel).

It does get a tad Freudian, but that was flavor-of-the-month at the time it was written, of course.

It doesn't hurt it that the best-known cover of it has one of my favorite Pre-Raphaelite paintings on it, either!

Katherine by Anya Seton
