Concetta Falcone | 2 comments One sentence summary of my book: The Lonely Nest is the story of two women whose short lives continue to be undocumented cases of domestic violence in Connecticut.
“It would be some time until the steel encasement sealing my lonely nest cracked. Some might say I was too damaged to know any better, having lived with an abuser so long. The truth is hard to accept and far more egregious when I say…we learn to sacrifice the ones we love in order to survive."
The events described in The Lonely Nest take place in Norwich and Bozrah
Connecticut and reveal what hides behind time and shame. With a sense of urgency, Concetta Falcone-Codding takes the reader through her family history, narrating four decades of secrets, deadly betrayals, and harm that destroyed the women in her family. Written from the perspective of her child-self, Falcone-Codding’s sensitive prose exposes the translucent line between witnessing abuse and being complicit in it. She originally wrote a rough draft in 2016, and decided it needed more work and rewrote the book four years later. Her life journey began in Bozrah CT, at Fields Memorial School and later on to NFA, where a teacher named Alan K. Driscoll became a mentor and saved her in ways only a good teacher can save a troubled student. Mr. Driscoll is included in four chapters. I think readers will find these chapters memorable. This book reveals familiar sights in Norwich, many of them long passed, such as Mr. Big, Woolworth, Thermos Company, Uncas on Thames, etc. However, the true purpose is to tell the story of her mother and sister and how their lives were shortened by domestic violence. There are several chapters on "The Norwich State Hospital" where her mom and sister were committed. Yes, this book is filled with beautiful memories of Norwich and Bozrah and holds past references to certain people and places, but never forget it is about domestic violence and incest. Concetta Falcone-Codding will never forget her days at NFA. They gave her the courage to go on to college and become a successful teacher and writer. Out of all her accomplishments, she is proudest of attending and graduating from the Norwich Free Academy, in 1971.
Thank you for your support.
The Lonely Nest is a story of domestic violence, incest, childhood loss, and courage written for all whose stories have yet to be heard.

Hey All,

I'm JT. I'm working on the rewrite for a draft I finished a while back. It's going pretty smoothly so far and coming out faster than I had anticipated. Anyone is welcome to take a look if you're into adventure stories. I'll try to keep my goodreads on par with what I post on wattpad but the wattpad may have a higher amount of information or content. Feel free to check out whatever suits you though!
Once my rewrite gets through the plot set up, I plan to look for some betareaders and maybe even some reviews/critiques.

Happy to be here and hope you enjoy your visit if you decide to stop by my world :)

Aleks Koval | 5 comments I wrote my debut novel in a psychiatric ward to show my artistic vision of the city drug scene in this urban legend told by queer and anarchist Matilda which rejects social norms or status, choosing to be a loser, who despise work as slavery.
She questions her identity to open scale of experiencing gender-fluid spectrum but also her own role played in filmed with her eye like camera perspective registering details of her explorations.
She never pays for a ticket, enjoying free ride where she pleases, her fearless hitchhike which is as well personal pilgrimage across borders and dimensions, but a raw account of the old school solo trip in survival mode of her physical power charged by endless life energy is a reason for spiritual growth on the road. Like a gypsy, like a walker-writer, she enjoys life on the road.
Rebels against corrections of disorders in institutions, which gives meaning to the title of the book as a salute to the oppressed by a system.
A psychological study of addictions filters dark, paranoid tropes of mental struggles, personal experiences which inspired prose fuelled by amphetamines Matilda's abuse chasing the best highs on polish speed she is sentimental about, her drug use speeds up the pace of narrative giving graphic visions expanding the perception of mind projecting later psychotic Reality

Lester Fisher | 215 comments Thank you Vincent and Bernadette, I am intrigued by this group's concept. My genre is memoir, in a series of 3 books the first is:

KIRKUS BOOK REVIEW

In this debut memoir, a man recounts his loves and experiences as a young seminarian and later a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa.

Fisher, who goes by Mike Klungness (his middle name and stepfather’s surname) in his book, opens with a “passing overview” of his life. Readers discover that the 60-something has children and that his third (and current) wife is his first love, whom he met when they were teens. Then the author focuses on Klungness’ intricate journey. He was born in 1947 to a single mother who moved to Washington state after she married. Roman Catholic school led to his enrollment in St. Francis Seminary. Though he was quickly smitten with neighbor Gretchen Huffhines, his studies to be a priest meant they would stay merely friends. Klungness eventually left the seminary, hoping to walk down the aisle with Huffhines. But as the Vietnam War raged, he felt he had few options beyond applying to the Peace Corps. He went to his Kenya assignment alone and immersed himself in an entirely new culture, all while racial unrest unsettled his home country. He also fell for Charity Mshoi, a mother of three young children who became his common-law wife. Once his tour ended, he planned to bring his new family to the States. Despite the work’s 672-page length and Fisher’s overview that takes readers into the 21st century, the memoir ends in the early ’70s. A sequel will follow. The author includes memorable details in this first installment, from Africa’s vast landscape and local foods to the treatment for the atrophied leg of Mshoi’s son. There’s a lively focus on many of the people in Klungness’ life, such as his mother, and though this autobiography occasionally hops around decades, it’s never confusing. Fisher enriches his book with snippets of other sources, like newspaper articles, as well as Klungness’ written correspondence with Huffhines and her mom Jana’s delightfully pithy journal entries. The author moreover adds copious photographs. Only some of them are Fisher’s own pictures—and those are the most rewarding.

An absorbing personal account of life’s unpredictable turns.

D.F. Kennedy | 2 comments DF (Donna) Kennedy. I am the author of THE TRUTH.

Kidnapped and held in total darkness, Dahlia Frost flips the imaginary book in her mind over to the cover, verifying this isn’t her story because her story doesn’t end this way. She wasn’t pushed, nor did she fall from the summit of her life; she nosedived into a bottomless hell when she sought out and demanded the truth before writing and then publishing her novel, Daddy Issues.
Four months prior to her kidnapping, with quarantine and travel bans lifted, while in London to promote her book Roland Hughes, ex-boyfriend turned celebrity, makes a grand entrance into her life, bringing with him the national spotlight. Dahlia quickly learns that her desire to stay invisible in a highly visible world becomes increasingly difficult when swept up in an unpredictable and danger-filled world. A world in which she discovers who she is and what she is capable of. She must choose which relationships are worth saving when those closest betray her. How far would you go for revenge? How far would you go to protect the ones you love?

James K. | 12 comments Thank you for taking time to moderate this group. I’m the newly minted author of Dog Star Night, a middle-grade fantasy adventure story. I published the ebook last month and, hopefully, will publish the paperback by 1 June. I’ve included a few of my favorite passages below. I suppose they’re spoilers, but when you're # 1,006,234 in Amazon, I don’t suppose spoilers really matter! Thanks again.

…But that morning, Max didn’t budge. His eyes didn’t open. His tail didn’t wag. Max lay lifeless. A wrenching pain gripped Benny’s stomach and he couldn’t breathe. Gasping, Benny finally caught a single breath and yelled, “Dad! Dad!”

…Just before getting so bright that Benny would have to turn away, the white light in the orb separated into colors. The colors took on shapes. First, pink and orange blended together to form a sunburned face, with rugged lines etched into it. Next, a swirl of red became hair and a beard. Finally, blues, yellows, and greens decorated the beard with beads. The orb became a crystal ball, the head of a red-haired, red-bearded man inside of it.

… Benny was engulfed by darkness. After a few seconds, white specks appeared overhead. At first, Benny thought they were stars, thousands of them, until he realized the specks were falling. One fell cold upon his face. They were snowflakes! Benny was no
longer viewing, but experiencing. He was in the globe, and what was in the globe was real.

The genre is tricky, I guess it's dark romance, chick lit and contemporary fiction. It has ranked number one in four categories which are: Sexual Addiction & Recovery, Bipolar Pathology, Domestic Partner Abuse (Books) & Coping with Bipolar Disorder. As well as coming in the top 100 for - Dysfunctional Families. I would love others to read it and spread the word. I'm hoping it will empower women. Thanks for your time, Cassandra

Thanks! I've been around for a while, but have not been involved in many groups or discussions. I normally write crime thrillers, but I had an idea for a sci-fi thriller, which is my latest work. If you like sci-fi, i invite you to check it out. It deals with a futuristic society that becomes overly dependent on an AI supercomputer and encounters a problem that threatens all mankind, or as Cece, the prime chip mistress, calls us - fleshlumps.

As an unknown indie, it's nice to finally find a place where I can connect not just with readers and other authors, but one where I am not discouraged or banned for trying to do so. (Some of the other Goodreads groups don't allow self-promotion, and ads platforms are both expensive and picky about what you say.)

Hi Vince

Thanks for putting this forum together.
It shows you really have aspiring authors in mind.
I'm very delighted to be a new member on this platform. There are a lot of ideas I am keen to share with others, who are actively contributing to this space.

At the moment I am interested in non-fiction along the lines of self-help, but I'm an open-minded individual.
I think gradually I'll move towards exploring fiction: authentic drama.

Janet Peters | 4 comments Hi, Authors/ Readers!

I'm looking forward to participating in this group. Writing is an ongoing learning curve. I published my YA book, "Cracks in the Heart", last September on Amazon, and now looking for more reviews. A story where the paranormal entwines with the spiritual throughout, as a young woman tries to hold together the already fractured family under the shadow of the Baldwin Hills Dam. Inspired by true events.
I'm originally from Los Angeles, grew up listening to the ebb and flow of the sea. By the time I hit my teens, I was surfing with the guys. I adored reading, writing poetry and painting. I graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu with a B.A. in Education and minor in Art. I married young and had two sons and a daughter, and in addition I taught for Los Angeles City Schools. Clint and I loved exhibiting our artwork in L.A., Laguna Beach and Park City, Utah.
Eventually my husband and I left the sea for the mountains...exchanged surfing for skiing. After my husband closed his architectural office, I opened a tutoring center and operated it for 15 years. Loved interacting with great staff and clients. Clint passed away in '03...the saddest day of my life.
Fortunately, my work and continuing with painting and writing kept me buoyant. I'm a strong believer than creativity keeps us young and able to fully embrace life.
Thank you, Vincent! I'm looking so forward to getting involved with this group, for simpatico is the operative word!

Isha Hi!

My name is Isha Patel, and I am a sophomore in high school.

Whether it was reading fairy tales, going to first grade with Junie B. Jones, or becoming friends with the BFG, reading has always been a huge part of my life. But while the average middle-class family owns around 13 books, yet there is only one book for every 300 children in Chicago’s underprivileged areas. While I had the privilege of expanding my vocabulary and developing skills like critical reading through books, thousands of kids are denied the essential skills of perseverance, empathy, and knowledge that thrive when reading.

You have the power to make a difference in a child's life.

I have partnered with Bernie’s Book Bank to host a book drive/fundraiser. Bernie’s Book Bank collects, processes, and distributes quality new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among under-served infants, toddlers, and school-age children throughout Chicagoland.

It would mean the world to me and these underprivileged children if you give up one day’s worth of coffee and contribute to Bernie’s mission. You are providing them the opportunity to reimagine the world and explore their imagination and individuality. For every 2 dollars you donate, you will add one book to an underprivileged child’s personal library and bring magic into their life.

Please let me know if you are interested in bringing attention to this mission by emailing me at [email protected], and I would be happy to give you further information on how to help.

Here is the link to my gofundme: https://www.gofundme.com/f/give-kids-...

Thank you so much!

Best,

Hi Linda :o)

Thank you for sharing your dilemma. I do not necessarily have an answer for you, just want to share that some books contain the loveliness attributable to a few genres simultaneously! which is a great thing.. may be one day of dealing with it, would be being pragmatic? Just decide how are you likely to get more interest/more readers- if you class your creation as middle grade..? or something else.

Good luck :o)
