Hey, great idea to do interviews. I'll add mine:

1. My name is Todd R. Tystad. I've lived in South Dakota, Nebraska, and California and my only regret is not having lived in New York City. I wouldn't rule it out yet, but it's pretty hard to beat Southern California.

2. My new book is called Blue Hill. It's about a boy who is 17 and lives a pretty normal life until he has a motorcycle accident and then discovers that he's able to do things that defy explanation. You can find Blue Hill on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and in the Apple iBookstore.

3. My ideas come from all of the people, places, and situations that I've encountered in my life. I think the world is full of stimulating experiences and all a writer needs to do is look and listen.

4. I've always enjoyed Young Adult fiction and am always looking for something new. I've never been disappointed with anything by Stephen King and I think every writer should read his On Writing. For my old school short stories, I love J.D. Salinger's books.

5. My next project is the one I'm working on right now. It's the next book in the Asa Roth series that I started with Blue Hill. Asa begins his senior year in high school and has to figure out how to live a normal life with his unexplainable abilities.

2) What is your book title, synopsis, and where can readers find it? I just released my very first novel for the Kindle and Nook: After Midnight. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas? I'm an unrepentant romantic and history buff, and I was fascinated by the beginnings of modern cryptology, some of the more unusual street performers found in London just before the Regency, herbal lore of that day and time, and the mystery surrounding how the Hope Diamond (previously one of the French Crown jewels), wound up in London following the Revolution.

4) What books/authors do you like to read? I have a weakness for the romance genre, especially books by Judith McNaught, Elizabeth Lowell, Teresa Medieros, Diana Palmer, and Julie Garwood.

5) What's your next writing project? A Contemporary Category length romance called "Bittersweet", where a reformed hacker and a former software tycoon discover that sometimes revenge can lead you to your heart's desire. My sister requested it as a belated college graduation gift, and I'm hoping to have it completed in time for submission to RWA's Golden Heart competition.

1)My name is Michele Kallio, I am a former teacher/librarian and retired medical office manager. I was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but live in New Brunswick, Canada, on the shores of the Bay of Fundy with my physician husband David, and our golden retriever, Sara.
2) My book title is BETRAYAL which is the story of two women separated by two continents and four centuries. Lydia Hamilton of modern day New Brunswick Canada is haunted by dreams and nightmares of a woman from the past. A trip to her mother's ancestral home in Devon, England reveals a connection, a diary of this woman, Elisabeth Beeton, a servant at the Court of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
3)The story idea developed out of a pen-pal correspondence with a woman in Devon, England. So many conincidences began to happen as I wrote the story. At that time, in the beginning, I had never been to England nor did I study any maps, but when I started wrtiting I would make up places only to have Christine find them, extinct religious houses, village names and people. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

My ideas come from everywhere and nowhere. I can look at a leaf outside and get an idea, or I can be watching a movie and get an idea. I can even be sitting still staring at the ceiling and get an idea. My best ideas, however, come from talks with my friends or strange dreams I've had.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

I like YA fiction, though I'll read Children's, Adult, or Christian fiction. My favorite genres are science fiction, fantasy, and Horror (all with a bit of romance), which is also pretty much what I write. My favorite authors are Eoin Colfer and Ridley Pearson.

5) What's your next writing project?

My next project is the sequel to a new novel that I will be releasing in Spring 2012, called "The Ending". It's a fantasy novel with some realistic aspects. I'm looking forward to working on it. ;)

3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

I find ideas everywhere, Internet, TV, books, and while people. I've been writing since I could hold a crayon.

What I had to learn was to see one idea to completion - my muse has a bad case of ADHD. It's taken me years to obtain that discipline. Though I still struggle with "project hopping" (my form of writer's block) I've developed mental tools that help me stay focused on one story until complete.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

Romance novels are my first love, historical and paranormal sub-genres. I also read Urban Fantasy.

I am a Moning Maniac.

My list of favorite authors is extensive and ever changing. Looking at my Goodreads book list, I have to mention Terri Brisbin (Highlander, not the Avon books), Robin Owens (Magical Fantasy), Gena Showalter (Darkest Series) and Elizabeth Rolls (historical).

5) What's your next writing project?

"Dreamsayer" is the next release for the Five Worlds series (date TBA). I submitted the work to the publisher last week for polishing. The concept for the cover art is awesome Can't wait to show everyone.

After that I'm working on another Five Worlds release, "Reality Shift."

The book is Sister Moon: Stories of the Supernatural, available as an Amazon Kindle ebook. Since it's a collection of 13 short stories, most readers can find something they enjoy. Most are urban fantasy, although a few can be read as fiction. To describe a few, in "Drifter", students stumble upon something in the wilderness looking for a sacrifice. In "Fallen on a Moonlit Night", Reed searches for others like him but stumbles upon a pack of predators who've given into their animal cravings. In "Mr. Button Saves the Day," young Claire befriends a brownie who helps her family. In "Swamp Duet", Joanne's secret love is sidetracked but not stopped when her boyfriend becomes a ghost.


3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

Most of my ideas emerge from dreams as a snapshot or single moment. Then asking myself questions like, "what happens next?" or "who are these people?" develops the plot, characters, and setting. Dreams always come with emotion, so I'm usually trying to capture the feelings or mood from the dream. Stories about magic work particularly well because dreams and magic share the same logic, different from the waking world.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

Tough to single out only a few from so many great ones! I'm amazed by Rachel Caine, Carrie Vaughn, Robert Jordan, and S.M. Stirling. Other great authors include David Weber, Mike Shepherd, Nancy Kress, and Lois McMasters Bujold. My degrees are in English, so lots of great classics, too.

5) What's your next writing project?

Currently, I'm working on a small set of short stories, likely to be an Amazon Kindle single this Christmas. The novel Lightning Strikes Twice is as yet unpublished. In it, Jason Korbin and his girlfriend Rayn realize that their benign actions have come to the attention of serious evil when a sword-swinging ghost tries to kill them. I'm currently writing the sequel.

My name is Karen A. Wyle. I am an appellate attorney, photographer, political junkie, and mother of two daughters, living in a county outside a town in Indiana. I am a lifelong reader and sometimes an author. I write science fiction, general fiction and picture books -- so far.

2) What is your book title, synopsis, and where can readers find it?

Can interspecies diplomacy begin in the womb? After seventy years on Tofarn, the human colonists and the native Tofa still know very little about each other. Misunderstanding breed conflict, and the conflicts are escalating. Scientist Mara Cadell’s radical proposal: that host mothers of either species carry fraternal twins, human and Tofa, in the hope that the bond between twins can bridge the gap between species. Mara lost her own twin, Levi, in utero, but she has secretly kept him alive in her mind as companion and collaborator.

3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

You'd have to ask my subconscious -- that's where the action is. I do tend to view current events, gossip, etc. through a science fiction lens. The idea for Twin-Bred came from an article about new videos of twins in the womb, showing an amazing amount of interaction between them, and also touching on the lasting trauma felt by those who lose a twin in utero or shortly after birth.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

I read science fiction, historical fiction, biography, history, 18th and 19th Century English classics, mysteries, YA, and once in a while a bit of fantasy. Mary Doria Russell -- whose books have included science fiction and historical fiction -- is one of my favorite authors.

5) What's your next writing project?

I have two rough drafts awaiting my attention -- the sequel to Twin-Bred, and a novel set in an afterlife of my own devising. (I'm hoping to edit the latter first, but I'm stuck on a plot point.) I also plan to continue my series of science fiction stories concerning human cloning. The first in the series, "The Baby," is a free ebook on Smashwords (99 cents on Amazon).

3) Where do you come up with your ideas?
I wrote my first book The Parents’ Guide to Hip Dysplasia to fill an unmet need. I have hip dysplasia, which is how I learned about that condition. At the time I wrote it, there were no books in print about hip dysplasia, and very few resources for families. I found I liked writing about pediatric orthopedic topics, which led to my decision to write The Parents’ Guide to Clubfoot.

On the fiction side, I get ideas from everyday life.
Most of my work has contemporary, realistic settings. I got the idea for Equilibrium from a newspaper story about a divorce. Half and Half grew out of some bits and pieces of an odd conversation I overheard at IHOP, and Negative Space emerged from my experience editing a nonfiction book about postpartum depression.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?
I read a lot of different authors and a variety of genres—nonfiction, literary, science fiction and fantasy, mystery, and once in awhile I’ll read some chick lit. In the new year I’m going to try to put more of what I read up on Goodreads. The books on my “to read” shelf include The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party, which is the latest in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith , and A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, which is the next selection in the book club that I’m in. I like being in a book club because I discover interesting books that I might not otherwise know about.

5) What's your next writing project?
I’m working on a young adult novel with the working title All She Wants to Do Is Dance. It’s about a teenager on a high school dance team who undergoes hip surgery. I’m in touch with a number of teens who have been through this surgery, and it’s a very intense experience. I know that paranormal is hot right now, but I believe there’s room for contemporary realistic fiction too. My aim is to appeal to teens in general with this novel. Teens are great and I love capturing a glimpse of their world view.

Short Synopsis - Brent Garrett is an impulsive twenty-something year old who managed to manipulate a normal nerg box (energy replacement unit about the size of a phone booth) and wound up with a time machine. He has not applied himself to any worthwhile project, which as a member of Meredith Complex he is expected to do. So a leap into the past seemed to be just the recipe for getting away from expectations he wasn't fulfilling and finding new expectations to meet. But things are not what he expected. They never are.

Can I just make one comment? I don't mean to be unkind but one of my pet hates is when the author tells me what the book IS, (I don't mean what it is about) but when they describe the book as ... in your case, 'mesmerizing' and 'hauntingly beautiful'. I WILL decide whether it is 'mesmerizing' or not. Authors should not make judgements on their own work.

My name is Andrew Chamberlain, and I am a novelist, ghostwriter and creative writing tutor. I have a wide range of tastes in terms of what I like to write; I tend to let my imagination explore a theme and just see what happens. My work is influenced by my Christian faith, sometimes very overtly, as with my 2004 novel Urban Angel; and sometimes very subtly, if at all. There is often a tension in my writing because I like to explore dark and sometimes violent themes and place these in a moral context.

Where do you come up with your ideas?

I think most writers are like magpies, in that we collect anything unusual and interesting – people, emotions, and situations. We collect these things in the hope that they might give us inspiration in the future. I don’t go out looking for these ideas but if I hear about something or experience it myself, I will store it for future use!

What books / authors do you like to read?

Again it’s a wide range of works, much of it in the fantasy / sci-fi / weird fiction genres. I think my favourite authors would be: China Mieville, who is a genius of weird fiction, Neil Gaiman, and Iain Banks.
What’s your next writing project?

I have two on the go at the moment. One is going to be for the YA market; it’s going to be a Sci-Fi thriller aimed at the male audience. This is an exceptionally hard market to get in to but the market was dictated by the story, so that’s where I had to go.
The other project draws on my Christian heritage and will be an exploration of the struggles people have with faith; the book will act as a guide, and indeed is written as a kind of travel guide, for those who are distant from God and want to somehow find their way back.

Seriously though, it depends on the story. For Pay Me, Bug!, the novel was originally a short story that wound up being the first four chapters, and the rest of the story was a result of me asking myself "what are the consequences of winning that big?" My current work-in-progress was based on a feeling I'd get when I would drive late at night down a particular highway that was lined with trees.

My ideas are generated from everyday experiences and emotions. I also have a very active imagination. While I am doing my day-to-day tasks, my mind will keep me entertained. Also, other books and movies will spark ideas for me.

Intriguing stories about people living in interesting times. Researching the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the British army's subsequent retreat, I discovered in various town histories accounts of ordinary people thrusted into extraordinary cincumstances. Journal entries of junior British officers presented a different perspective of the events. Using this material and my imagination, I was able to create an accurate narrative of an important historical event and portray universal human conflicts.

3) Where do you come up with your ideas? The idea for TVC came to me by this one little thing I made up “She’s like a wild and out of control wind, but also the most beautiful storm you have ever seen.” I liked to pretend I could make the wind blow when I was a child and fooled my little brother quite a few times by timing the wind just right. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

I am blessed (or, cursed) with a very active imagination and have been since I was a child. Often, ideas or characters or snippets of dialogue will suddenly pop into my head and I’ll have an “Aha!” moment that inspires me to turn those ideas into a novel. I’m an insatiable reader and enjoy losing myself in imaginary worlds, so I decided as a kid that I was going to create my own realms that other people could journey to as well.

As I said, I’m a prolific reader and will read almost any fiction genre. But, my first love is fantasy/science fiction and some of my favourite authors in that genre include J.R.R. My most recent book is Battlefield Angels: The Daughters of Charity Work as Civil War Nurses.

When the Civil War broke out, the Union and the Confederacy were prepared to fight, but they weren’t prepared to care for their battle wounded. While many people volunteered to care for the soldiers, the only ones with any experience were Catholic sisters.

Among the sisters, the most-experienced were the Daughters of Charity based in Emmitsburg, MD. When war broke out, they had already been caring for the sick for decades.

“The country had only 600 trained nurses at the start of the Civil War. All were Catholic nuns. This is one of the best-kept secrets in our nation’s history,” Civil War chaplain Father William Barnaby Faherty once said.

Nearly 700 Catholic sisters from 22 orders provided some sort of service during the Civil War. The Daughters of Charity provided the largest number—around 300—to serve in the war.

Once the smoke dispersed and the armies moved on, the Daughters of Charity and other medical personnel moved in to help those left behind on the battlefield. Battlefield Angels captures the primitive conditions in which the medical staff of both armies worked to try and save lives.

The brutality of the war tested even the Daughters of Charity’s abilities as they ran hospitals, served on troop transports and provided care in battlefield hospitals and ambulances. Armies from both sides of the war even occupied the sisters’ Central House at times.

The Daughters of Charity had such a high level of trust among the government officials that they were allowed in the early part of the war to move back and forth across the border between North and South. Battlefield Angels follows them as they are called to serve in Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. In some cases, soldiers had sisters caring for them on the battlefield, during their transport and at a hospital.

With their wide, white cornettes looking almost like wings, the Daughters of Charity did resemble battlefield angels. The sight of those wing-like cornettes told soldiers that relief was on the way; someone who cared for them was coming.

3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

Most of my ideas come from my reading of history books and historic newspapers. I’ll be researching an article and come across something else that I think deserves more attention than an article and I’ll put it aside in my idea file.

Sometimes my ideas come when my brain make connections between different topics I’ve read about and I see a way to connect them and present them in a different way. For instance, with my novel, Canawlers, I wanted to write a novel that brought life on the canal alive. As I pondered how to do that, I realized that the C&O Canal, running along the north side of the Potomac River as it did, was essentially the border between the North and South during the Civil War. I used the setting of the Civil War to show how life on the canal was and how war changed it.

Saving Shallmar: Christmas in a Coal Town is a non-fiction book I’m very excited about that’s due out in the fall. It’s about the people in a small coal-mining town who were literally starving to death one Christmas and what was done to help them. I was able to track down some former residents who were kids at the time as well as finding an unpublished manuscript from a miner who worked in the town at the time. I’ve even got plenty of never-before-published pictures. Plus, I think it reads very well. I’m anxious to see how well it does on the market.

I don't know.

Maybe I should write a little more on that.

I generally plan out a very basic plot, or perhaps just where it starts, and then I start writing. It just comes to me as I go. Often, I can be reading a book and suddenly a plot point will come to me, and yet it is nothing whatsoever to do with the book I'm reading. So who knows? Not me!

4) What books/authors do you like to read?
Terry Pratchett is probably my favourite author. I also love the two Dirk Gently books from Douglas Adams. Other than that, I don't read a huge amount. I've read some Peter F Hamilton and Iain M Banks, and like them both, but they are a little hard to keep up with - not strictly speaking my kind of sci fi.

I actually quite like YA books, just because they can be so innocent and...well, nice. It's good to be able to read something like that now and then.

5) What's your next writing project?
Next up is editing book 2 of my science fantasy series, NEXUS, and then publishing it, too. Then I'll move on to finish off book 3, which I have already written nearly half of.

I also have a short story in the works, which is nothing to do with space or aliens or shooting at all. But it requires me to be in a certain mood to write, so I'm not getting much done on it at present.

3) Where do you come up with your ideas?
Real life is the inspiration. I draw on everything: People, places, and events that I experience, that others talk about, and that I read of in the news. I also read a good bit and find that inspiring as well.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?
I am a fan of mysteries and science fiction, although I admit to reading a wide variety of things. I particularly like J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, Christopher Paolini, P.D. James, R.A. Salvatore, Ben Bova, and I recently discovered Kim Stanley Robertson. In non-fiction I like Joyce Meyer and Charles Swindoll.

5) What's your next writing project?
The end of the world is just the beginning in my recently completed science fiction novel titled "Splinter." It takes place in the year 3001 on a space station orbiting Jupiter and I am currently querying it to my publishers with fingers crossed that one of them will publish it.

I'm currently working on a murder mystery novel titled "Move." It's about a young woman that can't get a break and is always getting stepped on. She unknowingly makes an agreement with a djinn, and that just makes things worse.

I also have 2 projects on the drawing board. One is a follow up to Battleground Earth. I actually wrote it many years ago but dropped it when I switched to fiction. I'm thinking about taking it back up and doing updates and rewrites. It's about living by faith, but I'm thinking of rewriting it to focus more on unlocking your full potential.

The second project is a guide to being a bird owner. I'm not a biologist, but I've had birds as pets since I was 10 years old and would like to share what I've learned as a "mother hen" to helping these wonderful pets thrive and reach their maximum life expectancy. There's really a gap in this market, as there are plenty of books on cats and dogs, but few on birds - yet there are lots of bird owners out there.

Where do I get my ideas?
Anywhere and everywhere. Usually in a way from life, but exaggeration seems to come naturally to me, so even my "realistic" fiction (some of which may eventually become available) has a certain element of hyperbole--and humor. Many of the adventures in The Ninja Librarian grew out of incidents at the library. The original idea grew out of one smart-aleck comment by the reference librarian, who bears a surprising physical resemblance to the book's eponymous hero.

What books/authors do I like to read?
I have pretty eclectic (or was that eccentric?) tastes. I am a big fan of humor: P.G. Wodehouse, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett (thanks to the folks in the Humor group1). I also enjoy mysteries: Dorothy Sayers, Jacqueline Winspeare, Aaron Elkins, Dana Stabenow, Nancy Atherton, Nevada Barr, Peter Bowen. . . Likewise juvenile lit (upper elem more than YA, as the latter is usually too full of teen romantic angst for me): Richard Peck, Brian Jacques, Christopher Paul Curtis, Louisa May Alcott, L.M. Montgomery. I incline a lot to historical juvvy, and learn a lot there.

Oh, yeah, I like non-fiction, too, especially history, and science/natural science to stretch my English-lit brain a bit.


Next writing project:

My ideas usually come to me in a moment of quiet when I am folding laundry, brushing my teeth, or sleeping, although I have been known to dream up a storyline or two. I also try to take from my surroundings where I have gathered enough information to create one of my stories.

I have several. The author that made me want to write was the late L.A. Banks who used a mix of paranormal, romance, action/adventure, and religion to shape her stories. As an Irish gal who grew up in the Boston area loving sports and all things Tomboy, my characters are generally successful and slightly more neurotic versions of myself. I like to look into real situations, real life experiences, and draw out the central point to build a character. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas?
The idea for One Moment In Time actually came from a dream. It was one of those rare dreams that I remembered every detail long after I woke up. Most of my ideas really comes from my environment. I am currently about 70% through the first draft of my second novel called Trapped. It's about a man who's wife is murdered and all of the evidence points to him. While grieving for his wife, he's in the fight of his life to stay out of jail, while his whole world collapses around him.

What's your name and bio?
We are two traditionally published writers who formed the writing partnership Lambert Nagle with the aim to publish intelligent thrillers. We are British/Kiwi and Irish serial ex-pats and that is reflected in the locations we've chosen as the setting for our first novel. Alison has a background in film and TV production an screenwriting while Sean has a day job as Professor of Film at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Our first book under the pen-name Lambert Nagle is Revolution Earth. It's about a naïve young woman who gets in way over her head when she tries to take on the injustices of the world – only to find out that the target she cared so passionately about had simply moved.

3) Where do you come up with your ideas?
Our characters are what drive our stories. We conjured up this character, a naïve young woman who gets in too deep and plotted the story on a long and lonely car journey as we travelled behind a truck full of the raw material for uranium when we were in Australia's Northern Territory.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?
We read intelligent thrillers and are particular fans of Nordic noir – books, films and TV series from authors such as Henning Mankell, Stieg Larrson to John le Carre. But we also as individuals read very widely – poetry, non-fiction, literary fiction.

5) What's your next writing project?
Our next thriller, part two in the Stephen Connor series will be about the trade in looted antiquities. We have a third novel in the trilogy, about people smuggling also in the pipeline.

My name is Kevin J. Cunningham. I'm born, raised, and still living in the San Francisco Bay Area (Read as: the Suburbs) in the suburb that inspired the suburb that inspired Kurt Cobain to create the music that inspired Grunge. I like to think of it as the home to inspiration. There's also sprinkles of San Francisco proper, Los Angeles and Paris in there. After 10 years of writing about minor league baseball, I just e-published my first novel (which has nothing to do with baseball), and also write a webcomic called The SF Lunatic Fringe, which has everything to do with baseball. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

Well, there's this willow-like tree with long, dipping branches that wave in even a slight breeze, that sits at the east end of the park behind Notré Dame de Paris, and under it is a lonely park bench. For one week each spring, the tree blossoms. That's where, and when.

In all seriousness, inspiration comes from all aspects of my life. The people I meet, the things I see and do, and occasionally the change I want to see in the world.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

Neil Gaiman. Johnny Ives. Jayson Stark. Mark Twain, though I'd have preferred listening to reading. Other than that, it's about the story, not the author.

5) What's your next writing project?

Under consideration. When I finished To Hell With Fate; or, Why The Best Valentine's Gifts Come From Mini-Marts, I had three ideas to choose from. As I've gone through publishing and the first parts of marketing, I now have seven ideas, and one of the original ones went through significant changes. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

Walking through the woods, painting dragons, and reading the old classics are a source of inspiration to me. I began the Ian's Realm Saga by painting a 9 ft dragon, and the story evolved from there.

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

I'm crazy about C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, and C.S. Forester series (I love stories about tall ships). I also enjoy Mark Twain and books with a little bit of subtle humor in them.

5) What's your next writing project?

I'm currently working on four short stories that intertwine with the Ian's Realm Saga titled The Tale of the Four Wizards-Patriarchs of the Realm. After that, in February the second installment of the trilogy will be published. The Dragon Shield.

1) What is your name and bio?

I'm Andrew Lawston, sometimes credited as Andrew K Lawston, and I live and work in London. I grew up in England's New Forest, before going to university in Birmingham and travelling to Bordeaux. I specialised in French and have a BA in French, MPhil in French Film and PGCE (that's a teaching qualification to you non-Brits) in Modern Foreign Languages. My work tends to combine 20th Century French intellectualism with a fairly easygoing English style. Wow, that looks like a big claim just reading that, but yeah. My biggest success to date was a Doctor Who story for a charity fanthology which wove elements from Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le Fou into a Colin Baker romp across the West Midlands. I write in the evenings, by day I'm a Publishing Manager. I also do a lot of acting in my spare time.

My book is called Something Nice - 10 Stories. It's a collection of ten of my best short stories written between 2000 and 2011, and features a bit of horror, a bit of science-fiction, lashings of fantasy (in its broadest sense, think magical realism and urban fantasy rather than dark lords and orcs), the odd dose of the supernatural and even the occasional stab at something a bit literary. 3) Where do you come up with your ideas?

Every writer's favourite question... I don't know. The gap between thinking of an idea and then starting to write after a good think is a long one for me. My most recent short story is 8,500 words long. I started writing it seriously in March 2012, but had the idea as far back as 2007. So I genuinely can't remember where I was or what I was doing at the time. I think I come up with a lot of my ideas while walking. Not particularly long walks, I know I had one flash of inspiration just strolling to work one day. I find my brain has to be in a very precise mode of studied inactivity in order to bear fruit, and that's a hard mental state to achieve!

4) What books/authors do you like to read?

I read very broadly, from 18th Century French literature to contemporary science-fiction and fantasy novels, and everything in between. I don't read Christian fiction or romance, as a rule. Anything else is fair game. A selection of favourite authors would include Terry Pratchett, Charles Dickens, Voltaire and Isaac Asimov.

5) What's your next writing project?

I have a number of projects on the go at any given time. My most exciting work in progress is a new translation of a Casanova book which has never before been published (widely, anyway) in English. I'm also knocking out stories which one day could become a second short story collection, and submitting them to various anthologies and publications in the meantime.
