2010 Book Resolutions

I'd like to think so. The resolutions that I've read here so far seem pretty reasonable.

I have a bunch of books that I own. I would like to read them all by the end of the new year. Also I would like to finish series and catch up on the rest.
It took me literally a year to finish one series and it only had 5 books in it.
I also want to start a shelf for read in 2010 so I know how many I read in a year.

A "read in 2010" is a really good idea!

maybe for this group we should do a bought in 2010 lol."
I'd be too ashamed, lol!

That's my resolution for 2010. To stop letting anybody make me feel embarassed or foolish or ashamed about buying and collecting books! So there! lol

You know what Joseph, you're right! No self respecting bibliophile would allow anyone to make them feel bad for buying books. That's a good resolution to have. I'm going to arm myself with some good comebacks for my main offenders. I'm a bibliophile and proud of it, so proud that I think I'll make myself a tee shirt, lol!!!!

ya know maybe i will start that shelf too

I'll join Lauren in trying to actually read all the books I own and have not yet read within the next year...I actually started a list of these a few months ago (sort of to remind myself that I really did have enough to read when the book budget - hah! - was low). I only made it through the shelves in the living room with my list-notebook; have eighteen still on the list, but I'll finish at least the two I'm currently reading before the end of this year.

I would say I have around 40 books that have not been read. However I have this crazy unrealistic fear I will run out of books and that's why I keep buying them before I finish reading the ones that I have.

However, I am going to put myself on a budget this year and really stick to it. Or at least that's my intention.

Kelli, Michele, I can make you both feel so better, so not alone. On my shelves I have twice as many unread books as Kelli does. And I do mean that literally, 1137 to be exact. I just love to collect books just as much as I love to read them.

I own about 400 books that I own and have yet to read, and I know I'm not going to stop buying more. I will however try to be more disciplined when I buy books. The plan that I've come up with so far is to read at least 4 or 5 that I own before going out and buying any new ones. I think that'll be a good start to tackling the tbr pile.

Fortunately for me I have a Kindle so my 700+ books aren't taking up shelf room. But I do have several hundred paper books floating around my house. lol I love my Kindle but there is still such joy to be found in holding a paper book, the feel, the smell. Oh it's one of life's great pleasures!!

I made a 2010 shelf. I also make monthly shelves for the group, but its seems I'm the only one that uses them [books read:]. LOL.

LOL! That's the same thing I said, there's just something about a good old fashioned book.

That and catalog another 1000 books or so on to Goodreads that are in the library.
Kindle story for you so inclined.
An nearly lifelong friend has left her Kindle version 2 at home until the holidays are well over! Or so she emailed this weekend. Her travels regularly take her all over North American and Europe traveling several time a week on longer flights. So a Kindle seemed like it would be 'fun'.
The 'gizmo' has become a conversation piece as everyone who sees it,including the flight crews she travels with regularly, want to know details and have a myriad of question about it. "is it a good gift?" "how quickly does the battery run down?" "what about photos and illustrations?" "where doesn't it work?" and on and on. She thought about printing up a list and handing it out but thought it rude. So, the Kindle is at home in its sleeve awaiting the weekends or until the holidays are finished or the novelty of '2' has worn off.

My book resolution is to buy more books! At least it's a resolution I know I can keep :D

I like this idea in principle but it hasn't worked for me. I started 2009 with 104 books in my to-read pile, read 59, and now have 128 in my to-read pile. Maybe I should attend a B.B.A.A. meeting.

Ok, I went to the used bookstore today, but I did read 4 within the last few days. I didn't buy just one, the prices were just too good for my budget; but I felt good having somewhat stuck to my resolution.

I was thinking about reading the first book in each series that I owned as well. My only concern was that if I did that, I'd have quite a few series going at one time. I like your idea of not buying books that are part of series unless you've already read the first book, unless the price is too good to pass up, lol! My problem is that, depending on my mood, I can always justify the price :OP

Kathryn, you really don't have to do either one. Just do what parents have been telling kids to do for decades, just put on a sweater! ;-)

Definately. I haven't paid cover price for a book in at least a year. There's just no need with the coupons Borders gives out weekly and the great discount prices at Amazon and BookDepository.

That Electronics convention unveiled e-readers that really gives you a lot more variety with style and content. I think electronics makers are taking the e-books market seriously now. I want to look into the netbook/e-reader that looks likes a book. I'd like that concept. I like my Acer but it's not made with the screen for hours of reading.

Having limited money and space, I almost always try to find books I'm interested in at the library first; then if I really do love something I know it will be worth buying and I haven't wasted any money (or added to the groaning shelves) on a book I don't really care for.

Not to mention the long waiting lists for some of the more popular books. I just don't have the patience to wait for a book that I really want to read. For example, I'd like to read Lovely Bones before the movie is released. Last check, there were 26 people ahead of me in my entire local library system!

That is one of my concerns. Will they have what I want to read. I am in the process of moving to a very small town. They have a large, new library though. I am just worried about how small and slow paced the area is.

I'd like to complete at least one yearly challenge [in my reading challenge group:] and one series I started in 2009.
And you?
