Unapologetic_Bookaholic Since 2010 is right around the corner. I thought it I'd be fun to perhaps list a couple book resolutions. For me?

I'd like to complete at least one yearly challenge [in my reading challenge group:] and one series I started in 2009.

And you?

Cynthia | 13 comments In one of my other groups, we've set a challenge to read 12 books in 2010 that have been on our TBR lists for more than a year. Unfortunately, I have WAY more than 12 to choose from, but it made for an interesting meander through my bookshelves to choose which 12 I wanted to commit to read next year. The 12 I chose are ones that I always feel a touch of guilt for not having read, as well as ones that other people commonly reference - it will feel great to finally truly know what they are referring to, rather than just making guesses about it.

message 3: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore | 510 comments I would like to sign up for and complete one yearly challenge. Plus, I'd like to read more of the books that I already own before going out and buying more. Maybe read 4 or 5 books that I already own before going out and buying any more.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic I truly feel energized by everyone's commitment. We can do it! I believe =D.

I'd like to think so. The resolutions that I've read here so far seem pretty reasonable.

message 6: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) We should make everyone in the group list all the books they own but haven't read and then the goal for the year will be to read as much of those books as you possibly can before the end of 2010 :D

message 7: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) I like that idea Kyle!!

message 8: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (malachitemoon) | 36 comments I don't think there's enough room on this site to list all the books that I own but have yet to read!!! :)

message 9: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 106 comments well lets see.

I have a bunch of books that I own. I would like to read them all by the end of the new year. Also I would like to finish series and catch up on the rest.

It took me literally a year to finish one series and it only had 5 books in it.

I also want to start a shelf for read in 2010 so I know how many I read in a year.

message 10: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) LOL @ Kelli that's pretty bad :):)

A "read in 2010" is a really good idea!

That's my resolution for 2010. To stop letting anybody make me feel embarassed or foolish or ashamed about buying and collecting books! So there! lol

You know what Joseph, you're right! No self respecting bibliophile would allow anyone to make them feel bad for buying books. That's a good resolution to have. I'm going to arm myself with some good comebacks for my main offenders. I'm a bibliophile and proud of it, so proud that I think I'll make myself a tee shirt, lol!!!!

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 106 comments haha that's how I am I don't care what people say about my books. There are worse things out there that you could be buying.

ya know maybe i will start that shelf too
bought in 2010
read in 2010

I'll join Lauren in trying to actually read all the books I own and have not yet read within the next year...I actually started a list of these a few months ago (sort of to remind myself that I really did have enough to read when the book budget - hah! - was low). I only made it through the shelves in the living room with my list-notebook; have eighteen still on the list, but I'll finish at least the two I'm currently reading before the end of this year.

message 18: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 106 comments Rebekah that's cool. One book at time right lol.

I would say I have around 40 books that have not been read. However I have this crazy unrealistic fear I will run out of books and that's why I keep buying them before I finish reading the ones that I have.

message 19: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (malachitemoon) | 36 comments I just cannot pass up a good deal on a book. It gets so bad sometimes that I have to avoid certain stores or certain areas of stores so that I don't buy anymore! I have at least 550 owned and unread. It would take me a lot of serious reading to get through all those in a year! :)

message 20: by Michelegg (new)

Michelegg (mggoertzen) Kelli I'm so glad I'm not the only one with triple digits on the bookshelves!! I keep telling myself that I should just read what I have in 2010 and not buy any more, but that will never happen. I'm a bookaholic and I'm proud!!

However, I am going to put myself on a budget this year and really stick to it. Or at least that's my intention.

Hugs
michele

Kelli, Michele, I can make you both feel so better, so not alone. On my shelves I have twice as many unread books as Kelli does. And I do mean that literally, 1137 to be exact. I just love to collect books just as much as I love to read them.

I own about 400 books that I own and have yet to read, and I know I'm not going to stop buying more. I will however try to be more disciplined when I buy books. The plan that I've come up with so far is to read at least 4 or 5 that I own before going out and buying any new ones. I think that'll be a good start to tackling the tbr pile.

message 23: by Michelegg (new)

Michelegg (mggoertzen) Michelle I like your plan. Think I may have to adopt it as my own as well. Read 4 before I buy 1. Could work!!

Fortunately for me I have a Kindle so my 700+ books aren't taking up shelf room. But I do have several hundred paper books floating around my house. lol I love my Kindle but there is still such joy to be found in holding a paper book, the feel, the smell. Oh it's one of life's great pleasures!!

hugs
michele

I made a 2010 shelf. I also make monthly shelves for the group, but its seems I'm the only one that uses them [books read:]. LOL.

LOL! That's the same thing I said, there's just something about a good old fashioned book.

Becka the Book Girl (beckachoat) Give me good old paper and ink any day. Portable, markable, and usable by candlelight if the batteries/power go out!

message 28: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 1866 comments Mod
Yeah, you don't have to worry about the batteries going out in the middle of a good PAPER book.

message 29: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (malachitemoon) | 36 comments Agreed. I can see the benefits of having a Kindle or the like-- such as not having to haul so many books around-- but for me, that just doesn't make up for not having the actual book in my hands. The ritual of reading, curling up with a book and turning the pages, is therapeutic to me. I just hope that publishers never make me HAVE to switch. :)

CD | 170 comments Reading Resolution for 2010 - Add an extra 5 hours of reading time per week. With my schedule these days that may be a bit tricky. On average I think I can do it.
That and catalog another 1000 books or so on to Goodreads that are in the library.

Kindle story for you so inclined.

An nearly lifelong friend has left her Kindle version 2 at home until the holidays are well over! Or so she emailed this weekend. Her travels regularly take her all over North American and Europe traveling several time a week on longer flights. So a Kindle seemed like it would be 'fun'.
The 'gizmo' has become a conversation piece as everyone who sees it,including the flight crews she travels with regularly, want to know details and have a myriad of question about it. "is it a good gift?" "how quickly does the battery run down?" "what about photos and illustrations?" "where doesn't it work?" and on and on. She thought about printing up a list and handing it out but thought it rude. So, the Kindle is at home in its sleeve awaiting the weekends or until the holidays are finished or the novelty of '2' has worn off.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic When people see my Acer they have the same questions. I would think they have been around for awhile that seeing isn't that big a deal.

Kathryn (26kathryn) | 42 comments My mum didn't even know what ebooks were until I explained, I dread to think of how many questions I'd get if I had a Kindle thing!

My book resolution is to buy more books! At least it's a resolution I know I can keep :D

I like this idea in principle but it hasn't worked for me. I started 2009 with 104 books in my to-read pile, read 59, and now have 128 in my to-read pile. Maybe I should attend a B.B.A.A. meeting.

Ok, I went to the used bookstore today, but I did read 4 within the last few days. I didn't buy just one, the prices were just too good for my budget; but I felt good having somewhat stuck to my resolution.

message 36: by MsBeaglely (new)

MsBeaglely | 18 comments I have about 300 books that need to be read. So my goal for 2010 is to read the first book of new series, particulalrly those that I have owned for a while. I tried this in the last part of 2009, but it seemed that every 1st book that I picked up was terrible & I gave up. Also, I'm not going to buy any books that are part of a series unless I've read the first book in the series. Of course, if I get them on PB Swap or at the library for $1.00 I'm not going to pass those deals up.

I was thinking about reading the first book in each series that I owned as well. My only concern was that if I did that, I'd have quite a few series going at one time. I like your idea of not buying books that are part of series unless you've already read the first book, unless the price is too good to pass up, lol! My problem is that, depending on my mood, I can always justify the price :OP

Kathryn, you really don't have to do either one. Just do what parents have been telling kids to do for decades, just put on a sweater! ;-)

Ilean (ileanfulton) | 242 comments My resolution is to read more of what I have at home and buy less. I think Shannon 's plan sounds good. Try to read at least 5 books I already have before I can buy 1 new one. It sounds good but will it be doable? I will promise not to pay full price for any book! That is definately doable.

Definately. I haven't paid cover price for a book in at least a year. There's just no need with the coupons Borders gives out weekly and the great discount prices at Amazon and BookDepository.

That Electronics convention unveiled e-readers that really gives you a lot more variety with style and content. I think electronics makers are taking the e-books market seriously now. I want to look into the netbook/e-reader that looks likes a book. I'd like that concept. I like my Acer but it's not made with the screen for hours of reading.

message 43: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa theJeepDiva (thejeepdiva) I am really gonna give the library a try. I just buy way too many books (in everyone elses opinion). My husband is determined to make me stick to the no more than $100 a month on books.

Having limited money and space, I almost always try to find books I'm interested in at the library first; then if I really do love something I know it will be worth buying and I haven't wasted any money (or added to the groaning shelves) on a book I don't really care for.

message 45: by MsBeaglely (new)

MsBeaglely | 18 comments I would love to be able to use my local library more, but unfortunately that is not an option for. My local library's selection is really bad & unless it's a really popular author they don't carry it. They don't even have the latest Sookie Stackhouse book by Charlaine Harris.

message 46: by Ilean (new)

Ilean (ileanfulton) | 242 comments I would use the library but I live in a town without one of it's own. The closest library in the next town is only 5 minutes away but they charge $75.00 per year for a card, and the other which is 10 minutes away in the opposite direction charges $65.00 per year for a card. We, who live in our town refuse to use the libraries, except for those who are military (airbase less than 3 miles) is free for all military.

Not to mention the long waiting lists for some of the more popular books. I just don't have the patience to wait for a book that I really want to read. For example, I'd like to read Lovely Bones before the movie is released. Last check, there were 26 people ahead of me in my entire local library system!

That is one of my concerns. Will they have what I want to read. I am in the process of moving to a very small town. They have a large, new library though. I am just worried about how small and slow paced the area is.

message 49: by MsBeaglely (new)

MsBeaglely | 18 comments I live in small town & the closet library in my county is 30 miles away; however, the closest library is about 5 minutes away in another county. I can use that library free of charge because of an agreement between counties. Unfortunately, none of them have a decent selection. We just got out first book store last year. It's just too bad that it's a Books-A-Million, which is just like not having a book store.

message 50: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (malachitemoon) | 36 comments Your first book store?!?! I feel so bad!! Sometimes I complain because there's only one halfway decent used bookstore here and tons of books reasonably priced in thrift stores. I don't think I could survive with only one bookstore!! LOL!!
