Kathleen | 144 comments I completed 20.1 by revisiting the Judge a Book by its Cover and I read Guilty Pleasures. I know I have put images in posts before but I can't for the life of me remember how I did it. Anyway, I like the cover because it is both dark and romantic.

I now have 155 points.

Jessica (jess0702) | 127 comments I finished 5.6 It's a Dirty Job But... with Deception Point. One of the main characters in this novel is a Senator, and another is the President, neither of which are jobs that I would ever be interested in being involved with. I'll stay out of politics, thank you very much.

Roseann | 138 comments Finished a few more over the holiday weekend--

5.7--THE INCANTATION OF FRIDA K by Kate Braverman

This title takes place on the deathbed of artist Frida Kahlo--she is halucinating/remembering her life as she is about to die. The novel is thick with Magical Realism (a little too much for my taste), but Frida sure did live an interesting life if everything is true. Ms. Braverman and I are both Tigers.

and

15.6--FINAL PAYMENT by Steven Havill

My favorite present that I received as a child was a banana seat Schwinn bicycle. My mom was solidly against bikes and I had begged her for years for one when suddenly one day out of the blue she had it waiting for me as I returned from school. That bike and I travelled far and wide around the neighborhood!

The story in the novel takes place around a bicycle race in New Mexico. Only problem is--a triple homicide occurs right before the race and may cause it to be cancelled. An OK mystery, can't say I'd recommend it.

As for my volunteering--I curently work three hours a week at my local library helping with shelving and such. I also donated some toys to the Salvation Army tree at my local mall as I do every year.

and

15.3--A CAT NAMED BRAT by Lydia Adamson

Alice Nestleton is having a slow patch; she not only is getting no auditions, but she also has not gotten a cat-sitting job in a while. That is all about to change as she gets a call from an author who needs someone to watch his cat while he writes. Only problem is--he gets killed on Alice's first day while she's there and the cat isn't. Alice then has to put on her detective hat and find out just where the cat went. I love these stories and thought the series had ended years ago. I was so glad to find as I searched my library that there are additional stories I haven't read--Thank you challenge!!!

&

MICHELLE OBAMA by Elizabeth Lightfoot

I thought this would be a good read and I find the first lady interesting. I would have liked the author to have interviewed her subject, but apparently she was writing the book during the campaign and Mrs. Obama was not allowing interviews. I like the fact of anyone who can come from nothing--when asked if she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth she replied-we had four silver spoons and then when my father got a job we had five--and through hard work and dedication is able to graduate from Harvard. Quite a woman.

This brings me to 865 points!

OR
. Read A Book Where Friendship Is A Main Theme
AND
. When You Post Please Tell Us What Friendship Means To You.
The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand-12/27
This book is about 8 friends who call themselves the Castaways because they all find friendship in Nantucket. They are 4 couples, who suddenly become 3 when one of the couples die. It is a story that explores the boundaries of friendship and forgiveness.
Friendship is about trust and honesty between two people. A person can have multiple friendships, which are sustained over time despite hardships. I have recently been separated from my husband of five years and have found that my meaning of friendship has changed. Some people felt obligated to choose over us, which has caused me to lose many friends. The friends who have decided to remain in my life during this difficult time are very special to me and I am grateful to have their support. I know that I can talk to them about what I am going through and I trust them. Friendships are sometimes formed immediately, while others are formed over time.

The Great Crown Jewels Robbery of 1303 The Extraordinary Story of the First Big Bank Raid in History The Great Crown Jewels Robbery of 1303 The Extraordinary Story of the First Big Bank Raid in History by Paul Doherty by Paul Doherty

Edward I conquered Wales, and pretty nearly did in Scotland. While he was away fighting William Wallace, those at home in Westminster holding the treasury--like bankers sometimes do--decided that the treasures in their keeping was theirs. They broke into the vault and took away as much as they could carry. Edward I sent his agents home to get to the bottom of the matter. An entertaining brew of high crimes and misdemenors in a mideval setting--I give it 5*. Who says history is dull!

This is the second Morgue Mama Mystery. I haven't read the first. Morgue Mama is Newspaper Librarian Maddy Sprowls, who oversees the Hannawa Ohio Herald-Union. She manages to thrust herself into a mystery about the death of a elderly woman she met at a garage sale (Maddy is 69 years young. And crabby. But with a heart of --well, something harder than butter.) If you are looking for realism, this probably isn't it. But it was fun.

The early 1800's was a fascinating time, so much was being discovered that I think I would have enjoyed living then if I didn't know what I would have been missing! So much depended (as it does now), on connections and money. If I could go back in time to be Elizabeth Temple-from James Fenimore Cooper's 'The Pioneers', that it would be ok!

I finished 15.5, Readers Round the World, with
a. Christian in Denmark: The Winter of Frankie Machine and
b. Delia in Romania: Her Secret Affair

I really enjoy this challenge because it makes me go out of my comfort zone and try books I would never pick up otherwise. Delia's list was all Regency romances, so I went with one of her favorites. I am now sure that Regency romances are not for me. I'll have to take Delia's word for it that this book was one of the best of the genre. It did make my librarian laugh- she thought there was a mistake when this book request came across her desk. Christian's list was a relief. I loved Frankie Machine. A superior crime thriller with a lovable hit man.

I finished Grave Secret by Charlaine Harris for 5-2 (it has a red (the lettering), white and blue cover).
Grave Secret (A Harper Connelly Mystery, #4) by Charlaine Harris
I'm sorry this book ended with a feel of finality. I really enjoyed this series but the ending made me think she may be all done with Harper Connelly and family.

I also listened to Tim Curry reading A Christmas Carol for challenge 30-7 (that was fun!). This book could also have been used for challenge 5-7 or 15-8. In keeping with 15-8, I also watched the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol.

25.9 Bridget- World of Books

A. Book with a Map - The Queene's Christmas by Karen Harper contained map of medieval London, list of characters and a geneology of the Queen's family

A very good addition to the author’s Elizabethian mystery series. Very interesting plot where Queen Elizabeth I has a small number of close attendants ( Privy Council) who help her solve murder mysteries that occur in the court. The book is well-written and gives a lot of information regarding the lives of both the noblemen and the commoners in that era. The depth of detail in the plot shows that a great deal of historical research was done by the author. 4 stars

B. Books with Extra Content - The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet by Reif Larson full of extra materials - maps, illustrations, drawings, lists, personal notes, etc.

An intriguing new type of illustrated adult book - not a graphic novel. The story of a young boy who wants to be a cartographer and scientist. The book is a well-written story of his work and of his being awarded a major prize at the Smithsonian. It also delves deeply into his growing up and his relationship to his family. It is filled with his drawings, maps, illustrations and notes which supplement the text wonderfully. His thoughts regarding science and its relationship to human thought is especially interesting. It may be the start of writing outside the boundaries of traditional composition. 5 stars

B. Newbery Honor Book: Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson

I thought that Feathers was a great book. I liked : Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village and thought it would be a good introduction to some of the roles that people held in Medieval society, but Feathers grabbed me from the opening sentences and just didn’t let me go. I like that the deaf brother in Feathers was portrayed in such a realistic light, and the issues the kids were dealing with were handled so poignantly.

Laura | 102 comments I have actually had time to do some reading over the past couple of weeks and am finally posting my first points. I have completed the following tasks:

35.3 DLM Rose's Task "It's About Time": Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. It was a cute book and a quick read. If you are looking for something with a complex cast of characters or intricate plot, however, this isn't it.

25.5 Abigail's Task "Odd Man Out": Free - The Future of a Radical Price by Chris Anderson. I won this book here at GR. It had some interesting aspects to it but I didn't find the title to accurately reflect the contents and I was never quite sure where the book was headed.

Roseann | 138 comments One more down (and my least fave reads so far)--

15.5--THE KILLER INSIDE ME by Jim Thompson (from Max Nemtsov’s list “Russia”)
A crime novel written in the fifties with all the misogynistic baggage that goes along with the beast. I really hated this novel and had to force myself to finish! Story is about a man who works in law enforcement and kills in his spare time. Unless you like that sort of thing and don't mind lots of violence against women, stay far, far away!

&

LOVE IN A COLD CLIMATE by Nancy Mitford (From Selena in the Bahamas)
After the previous novel I thought this coutry romance set in merry olde England would be a breath of fresh air...unfortunately, not so much. There was not the violence from the prior novel, but there was also no interesting plot. The novel moved very slowly through these people's lives and I wanted to move more quickly. I cannot say stay away as it did have redeeming qualities such as good characters and description, it was just too slow for me.

My initials are RB and I chose "Good Readers" from Russia and the Bahamas.

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments Some updates from more holiday travel reading. I took on Diane' Posthumously Speaking task with Terry Pratchett's Mort (featuring Death as a main character, and various other not-quite-alive types) and Ian Fleming's The Man with the Golden Gun, which was published after his death.

I also rounded out Theresa's Color by Numbers task with Charles Finch's A Beautiful Blue Death and Dorothy L. Sayers's The Nine Tailors - the latter is especially good if you're into golden-age English mystery, and will also work for the 1001 Books To Read Before You Die task.

Vicki | 63 comments For Task 35.3 I just finished One Second After byWilliam R. Forstchen

Kind of a depressing book to read on the beach in Cancun, but it is what it is. It was kind of frightening too, a disaster book that seemed much too possible.
