Past: 1977 Hugo Award Winner Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm
Present: The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist
Wilhelm's 1977 novel was post-apocalyptic and I didn't get a good feel for when she was trying to set the story. Holmqvist's felt like the not-so-distant future. Both were alike in that the futuristic setting was not very idealistic. However, Wilhelm's ending was actually way more positive than Holmqvist's. It ended on uncertainty of the future they were creating for themselves, but I had the feeling that they would make it. In Holmqvist's ending, I just gave up. I had no hope for the characters living in The Unit because they were not willing to fight. Wilhelm wrote about cloning, and Holmqvist about harvesting for what are considered the non-expendables.

5.1 Disney
When Beauty and the Beast first came out, I was blown away. Especially after living though the 80's Disney junk. And I like to see what authors can do with fairy tales.
Read Beast by Donna Jo Napoli. Where the story is basically the backstory of the Beast. Who in her version is a Persian prince and is turned into a lion. No dancing furniture in his castle, but a very small fox kit that he rescues becomes part of the process of Belle warming up to him. There is actually only the last third of the book with Belle. The rest is an interesting look at how he adapts and keeps his religion (Islam) and his human self.
5.6 Dirty Job
To begin with I have worked in a restaurant. I was a dishwasher. I was also a cook at a summer camp. But I will not be a waitress. While a dishwasher, I did some table bussing during "Pie Day". I had little old ladies crab at me for their waitress and even one who PINCH the very back of my arm as I was clearing a different table. This is how they treat bus"boys", how much worse the waitress?
So I read Waiting: The True Confessions of a Waitress by Debra Ginsberg. Yup. I was right. I wouldn't last a minute as a waitress. But it reinforces why I try to be a good tipper. It is a hard job, it is -contrary to how many people see it - a real job.

Also read Graceling, Lolita and Name of the Wind, but won't get points for them yet.

I finished 15.1, Make Me Laugh, with
a. The Bear Went Over the Mountain: A Novel and
b. watched Blazing Saddles
The Bear Went Over the Mountain was funny and I don't usually like satire. It was a one joke book- the same punchline over and over, but it worked.

"Camouflage" took me a really long time to get through. It seemed to me like not much happened and I was honestly sort of bored. I kept wanting to like it (it had been highly recommended to me and I like science fiction), but I just couldn't. Actually, the "historical" parts weren't bad, but the future parts dragged. Go figure.
On the other hand, I loved "The Disappeared" and am excited that there are more in the series. It is set in the future, off Earth, and is a sort of detective story. I like science fiction that is essentially another genre, but a kick-ass future version.
This brings me, somewhat painfully, lol, to 645 points.

30.4 SANDRA'S TASK - WORLD AIDS DAY -
Year of Wonders – Geraldine Brooks (308) – 1/12/2009
Although this book is set during the plague in 1666-1667 in England it's more about Anna Firth. A servant who learns to read and write, who is widowed and looses what seems to be everything precious in her life, Anna still finds a way to live her life in a time of devastation. I wasn't thrilled with the ending, I felt it was a bit forced, but still a very good book that I ended up giving a 5 because there isn't a 4 1/2.

30.2B The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I have also finished 30.5 Diane's Task by reading Everlost by Neal Schusterman (4*) and Fire in the Blood by Irene Nemerovsy (2*). I really enjoyed Everlost. I thought it was a great YA book. Again I could not get into Fire in the Blood. I did not like the characters at all and could not get into the story.
This will bring my total to 345 points.

5.3 Royal Reading - Ten Queens: Portraits of Women of Power by Milton Meltzer -- Interesting book - amazing how these women could step beyond their culture and rule with so much authority. Very informative - 3 stars
10.1 Big Top - Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
This is an icon in science fiction literature. Wonderful characters, engaging plot, and message that stays with you long after the words are gone. Not an easy read since it is filled with deep philophical concepts. The book closes but the message leaves you pondering. 5 stars
30.4 Sandra - Aids Day -- Company of Liars by Karen Maitland
An exceptionally good book. Similar to the Canterbury Tales. Takes place in medieval England around the time of the Black Plague. A group of strangers are thrown together trying to keep away from the plague. Each has a secret life which is fleshed out throughout the story. Wonderfully written. 5 stars

I read The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo (Winner 2003) and Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes (Honor 2003).
I like Despereaux better and love the full title of the book. The main reason I liked it better was that I enjoyed the author's writing style. I like how she addressed the reader. It was a great story about love, good and evil, and a bunch of other things. This is definitely a book I will buy for my niece and recommend to others with children.
Olive's Ocean was okay, but not nearly as special as Despereaux. I actually found it a bit depressing at times.

I finished 30.2, Helen's Science Fiction with
a. Ender's Game and
b. Ender in Exile
I enjoyed Ender’s Game (1985) and Ender in Exile (2008). Ender’s Game introduced wonderful characters and intriguing moral dilemmas. It was the perfect setup to a series. I think Ender’s Game was more YA: the family dynamics, schoolyard bullies, adult manipulation, and coming-of-age. IMO, Ender in Exile was written for the fans- the now adult readers who discovered OSC as kids and the later generations of SF readers. I think Exile’s use of written communications was a literary device to advance the plot without action and at times I felt shortchanged. Ender’s game did such a good job of explaining intent via Ender’s actions and strategies. Direct explanation “this is why I think that” just helped fill in the blanks between the Shadow and Ender books. Manipulation was a major theme in both books, but I think the 23 years showed in Exile. Revealing Ender’s parents manipulating the manipulators might reflect Card’s experience as a parent- the pendulum swing of a parent’s intelligence (at least in my experience): parents know everything when you are a child, know nothing when you are a teenager, know everything again when the children have children themselves- but provide a mirror of what you would/would never do, then parents become human with strengths and weaknesses. I saw that pattern in the Wiggin family dynamic and in Ender’s relationship with Graff. I was entertained by the manipulation- so Machiavellian and clever. I think Exile involved bigger themes of responsibility, blame, guilt, and redemption, but it was sometimes shallow as it tried to link unlike storylines. I had high hopes for Valentine in Exile, but she was underutilized.
Thanks Helen for this task- it brought me back to SF after a long absence.

5.6--THE CORONER’S LUNCH by Colin Cotterill
A weird murder mystery set in 1970's Thailand that combines murder, political espionage, and mysticism. The funny thing is, the coroner portion of this book was the part I found most interesting. The rest of the mystery was a little slow and plodding.
In regards to the challenge: I actually thought about being a foreinsic investigator at one point, but then I looked at a textbook and saw some photos of dead children; my stomach turned and I decided I could not deal with their deaths. The only thing worse would be what I would have to do if I was a coroner. I can deal with blood and guts, but a child dying of unnatural causes bothers me.
and
5.9--SWEETHEART:THE STORY OF MARY PICKFORD by Robert Windeler
I really enjoyed this biography of "America's Sweetheart" as it not only chronicled her life, but the lives of many of Hollywood's early stars along with the history of movies which started around the same time as Pickford was born. This is an older bio written in 1973 when Pickford was still alive, but it is still worth reading if you are at all interested in early Hollywood history.
As long as the migraine I have been fighting for the last five days doesn't come back, I should finish today! Then I guess I need to think about the midway challenge, hmmmmm.
This brings me to 1045 points!!

I also finished 35.1. I used Catching Fire for my 5 star read and got 390 - Customs, etiquette, folklore & 641 - Food & drink. For 390, I read Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow which was based on a Norweigan Tale and Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow and The Sugar Queen where food played role in the book.
That makes my total 270 points.
