for task 5.3 i read King Lear. wow. painful. i like shakespeare a lot, but this is my 2nd least favorite of his. super grim.
for task 30.2 i read Neuromancer and Under the Skin. neuromancer was a tough read for me, because i'm just not imaginative enough to "see" what they're describing to me. under the skin was a re-read and just as good as the first time. a very sad story, really.
the differences between the two? well, neuromancer felt very 'cold' to me, as i think it was supposed to. it was very 'hard metal and bright lights' in it's style, which of course fit for it's story. under the skin was much more accessible for me, and had really lovely prose and fabulous descriptions and insights, which also fit for it's story. i'm not sure my words are conveying how i'm feeling, i suck that way. neuromancer felt very rigid and harsh, under the skin was very warm and rich. so i think the difference in style was very much related to the choice of subject matter. not that under the skin was a "nice" book. (i will NOT be getting a ticket for best book review! :P)

I don't know! I haven't read the original yet. According to the book I read, the first 15 or 20 books were re-written in the 50s and 60s mostly due to concerns of political correctness. My local used bookstore had an early edition of the Clue in the Diary but I keep forgetting to look at it while I am there.

I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I enjoyed both books.

Interesting....I had no idea. (although I guess I'm not surprised.)
I'm going to have to give that Girl Sleuth book a second try. I borrowed it from the library a couple of months ago but just couldn't get into it.

25.3A Undone by Karin Slaughter THe Book is Bright Purple with a little White
25.3B One of the Survivors by Susan Shaw
35.3 The Second Opinion by Michael Palmer

I probably should have started with something a little more well known by Marquez, if only to get used to his writing style. This book was blessedly very short-- but I felt like there could have been more to the story... I feel like maybe I missed something. This book was my book club read at work, so maybe next week when we have our discussion I'll appreciate the book a little better...
Into Thin Air was the first book on my TBR and I'm soooooooooo happy to have finally read it! A chilling account of the Mt Everest Disaster of 1996. I couldn't put the book down, particularly in the last 50 or so pages. I took this book out of the library, but I think I might want to re-read it in the future, so I'm going to buy it.
That should bring me to 185 pts.

5.9 – ISN”T IT ROMANTIC
Read: Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani
Blech! Only gave this 1 star. I usually really enjoy this author, but this book was heavily laden with way too many descriptions; and the story just plodded on and on. I didn’t particularly like the characters and ultimately didn’t like the ending which was a bit ambiguous.
10.7 – SCREEN STORIES - Read A Book Inspired By, OR Was The Inspiration For, OR Is In Some Way Related To Your Favorite Television Show
TV Show - True Blood
Read: Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris
Another fun “Sookie” read. Darn, now I’ve read the whole series and will have to wait for the next one to be published. I gave this one 4 stars.

I am in Paris at the Louvre. In 2002 I visited London and one day we took the Chunnel to Paris. We saw all the usual tourist spots: The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Champs Elysee, and the Arc de Triomphe. Unfortunately, the Louvre was closed that day. My dream is to return to Paris to see the Louvre.

50.1--
THE GOLDEN BULL by Marjorie Cowley
This YA novel tells about a brother who is sent to the city of Ur (now Iraq) in ancient Mesopotamia to work as an apprentice for the temple's goldsmith. At the last moment, his sister is sent along with him to find her way; unfortunately, without a job a girl's life in the big city can be rough. This story tells of both the good and the bad of living in the ancient world. A VG read.
and
SKATE CRIME by Alina Adams
This books talks about the politics and soap operas that go on behind the scenes of Olympic level figure skating.
Lucian Pryce is a renowned Oympic medal winner and coach to many other Olympic winners and hopefulls. On the day before a tribute to his life in skating he takes a fall and dies. What appears to be a very sad accident looks like murder to Bex Levy and as she starts looking into it, she finds that almost everyone associated with Julian has motives to kill him. A pretty good mystery. I found the background in the skating world very interesting, albeit a little extreme. I knew the skaters has many injuries, but I did not know that skull fractures were not uncommon.
This brings me to 1100 points and the end of this challenge. I'll list my "reads" in another post.

Well, it's off to online grad school for me in a couple weeks, wish me luck on my MLIS! See everyone in the next challenge!!

My favorite gift of all time was a beautiful antique box given to me by my Grandmother just before she passed away. It's very ornate and beautiful. I smile everytime I see it!
I read Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel for this task. Very dark mix of mystery and horror. I enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars.

I finished task 35.3. DLM ROSE'S TASK - IT'S ABOUT TIME by reading The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.
Total points = 195

Here are some of mine that are done:
5.2. She was a grand flag maker - Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
5.10. The allure of alliteration - The Diamond of Darkhold by Jeanne DuPrau
10.9. Remembering Pearl Harbor - Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry (borin in Hawaii)
25.2. Gina's Task - The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau , friendship, to me, is caring about a person, taking the time to know what they are doing, knowing their past and present, and being there for one another when needed.
30.7. Jan the Gryphon's Task - The Cat Who Yalked Turkey (Audio CD) by Lilian Jackson Braun and narrated by George Guidall (could be in 5.8 and 5.10)
35.3. DLM Rose's Task - The Year of Secret Assignments by Jaclyn Moriarty
Making my total 155 points.

5.3 The Constant Princess
15.2 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass and The Neverending Story (I had a hard time finding the link!)
20.2 Rosa Parks: Tired of Giving In
25.2Talk Before Sleep: A Novel To me, friendship is being there through good and bad, tears of happiness and sadness, and health and sickness. Friendship through an illness was a major theme in this book and has been a major theme in my life. I was to return to work on Tuesday after medical leave, but will not be able to return to teaching this year. Looks like I will finish the challenge after all.
25.5 Have a Little Faith: The Story of a Last Request
25.6 The Housekeeper and the Professor
30.4 Fever 1793
30.5 Everlost and Northanger Abbey
30.6 Annie John: A Novel I live in cold Ohio, so this setting of Antigua is sounding pretty good right now.
30.7 Murder is Binding fits tasks 5.8, 15.3, and 15.7
My new total should be:

A. First name begins with A, first person on list for Austria is Fiordiligi and a 5* book is “Flirting with Danger” by Suzanne Enoch (thought this was great)
B. Last name begins with I, first person on list for Iceland is Charlane Brady and a 5* book is Jane Goodall 40 Years at Gombe (I'm fascinated with chimps and saw Jane Goodall speak once -- this was a really interesting history of her work)
This brings me to 725 points.

My current total is 295.

The Little Giant of Aberdeen County
by Tiffany Baker(Goodreads Author)
3.5 stars
I love stories told from the perspective of "odd" or unusual characters. Giants, dwarves, Siamese twins, and etc.. always seem to have a lyrical tale to tell. The plot was nicely paced and interesting.

Read Bridge to Terabithia (winner) and Ramona and Her Father (honor). I really enjoyed both books. They both had realistic characters, relevant situations and thoughtful outcomes. I think Bridge to Terabithia is one of the best children's books I have ever read.

I did finish the odd man out task, 25.5 with The Patron Saint of Liars. I actually really enjoy Ann Patchett's books despite the fact that I'm always a little let down at the ending. Despite this, she takes unusual situations and creates complex characters and relationships out of it.
Total points: 395

I think this has been my favorite task so far. My best gift ever has been the joy of books and reading from my mother. So many memories of walking to the public library together in what would become my elementary school and choosing Madeline almost every other trip. You didn't own books when I was young, just Little Goldens till you got to the chapter series like Bobbsey Twins (my favorites or Nancy Drew) but I have become a hoarder!
So my book was The Man Who Loved Books Too Much - Allison Hoover Bartlett.
As to giving, I can think of no greater gift than books, so as I unpacked boxes and boxes of books this past month, I culled all the duplicates that I just had to purchase because my copies were packed up and donated them to our Libraries book sale. There were many, but who can resist Pride and Prejudice or Othello?

Friends, Lovers, Chocolate by Alexander McCall Smith
Friends come and go throughout your lifetime, but true friends are the people who are there for the bad times as well as the good. You can laugh with them, cry with them, be brutally honest with them (even when they don't want to hear it) and then pick up the pieces when things go wrong (without saying 'I told you so').

And I read A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute.
I also completed task 30.6. I read The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow and dreamt myself away to a warm and sunny San Diego, California...
Total points: 145.

25.2 Book with friend(s)(ship) in title or with a theme of friendship, post what friendship means to you: The Magicians by Lev Grossman(GoodReads author) 402pps read 1/14/2010.
This is my Goodreads author book, and is also about friendship, or at least one youg man's inability to recognize or understand friendship and love. On one level this book is a parody or perhaps an elaborate homnage to both Narnia and Harry Potter, but in this telling the characters are much too human and flawed. The children who do magic are also the "best and brightest" nerdy kids with amazing powers and nothing to do. The magic gets out of hand. Quentin, the protagonistdoes learn the value of true friendship and love, and that these things have importance that transcends reality.
Friendship for mea has always been about having someone who knows you as well as you do yourself, someone to be comfortable with, who can forgive the flaws. My family are some of my best friends, but I also have always wanted good GFs outside the family, maybe that's a female thing?
25.9 Book containing a map AND a book with extra content:First Lord's Fury and The Unkindest Cut by Jim Butcher and Honor Hartman , 705pps read 1/16/2010 and 12/25/2009.
All good fantasy books have to have maps, and The Codex Alera series is no exception. Butcher is a fun writer and the Alera series doesn't disappoint. The first book is a little slow, setting up the story, and this book (the last) has a feeling of tying up loose ends, but the middle books particularly are great.
The Unkindest Cut is another cozy mystery, but its extra content is bridge tips with hands and bridge diagrams.

10.1 Under the Big Top with The Ringmaster's Secret by Carolyn Keene. This is an old-school Nancy Drew (I was inspired by the poster up-thread) and boy was it a hoot to read! Nancy (age 18) is the emergency fill in for the equestrian stunt rider (somersaults, etc. on the moving horse). She ends up traveling with the circus while she solves the crime. My daughter has about 50 of them and I will have to read more!
10.2 Love Is Blind by Lynsay Sands. I *loved* this -- reminiscent of Julia Quinn Bridgerton books. The main character is effectively blind.
This brings me to 745 points.
