Eilymay (eilisislocajustlikecocoa) Ok. So far I've completed the following tasks:

5.1 THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY
Read : Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn (my favourite movie is Mulan! :) )
I quite liked this book as it had just the right balance of fantasy and realism to keep me interested

20.1 MOST IMPROVED PLAYER - BETH MN'S TASK - REVISITING THE PAST
Read: The Host by Stephenie Meyer (Read A Book That Has Been Translated from its Original Language)
Not a great book from a science fiction point of view but quite entertaining all the same

25.5 ABIGAIL'S TASK - ODD MAN OUT
Read : Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
Long, boring and predictable - but for some reason I couldn't stop reading it

25.6 STEPHANIE US' TASK - ISLAND DREAMS
Read: The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry (set in Ireland)
I really liked this book as it gave a really poignant insight into Ireland in the past when the Catholic church practically ruled the country. Quite a twist at the end as well!

So, that gives me a total of..... 75 points, not as bad as I expected!:)

Melissa | 172 comments 15.6 The Season of Gifting and Giving: The best gift I ever received, or to be more precise, the coolest and most interesting, was a necklace my husband gave me about 11 years ago. We were vacationing in Florida, and the necklace is a silver coin, made of silver from the sunken wreck of the 17th-century Spanish galleon Atocha, and minted from one of the coins also found on the wreck. I loved it because it was a remider of our Florida vacation, a cool piece of history, and definitely a conversation piece. I loved it in the past tense, because about 5 years ago, I wore it to church one day and it fell out of its setting, and I have not seen it since. :(

I read Fatal Treasure: Greed and Death, Emeralds and Gold, and the Obsessive Search for the Legendary Ghost Galleon i Atocha/i by Jedwin Smith, which was a fascinating if somewhat sensationalized account of the search for that treasure and its eventual recovery. I suppose considering the tragedies associated with that ship, I should be thankful that I lost only the coin - many lost their lives. But I still miss it.

As for giving back, I am a Girl Scout leader with my daughter's troop, and I also volunteer as our area's Service Unit Director.

Natalie, I thought it started off really slow too, but once you get past the first couple of chapters, to the point where they are actually writing Nancy Drew books it gets much more interesting. Good luck with it!

message 1762: by Julie J (new)

Julie J | 115 comments I read A Voice in the Wind for the second half of 25.4. A Voice In the Wind takes place during the first century and the other book I read A Cup of Tea: A Novel of 1917, obviously takes place in 1917. I would definitely have preferred to live in 1917. Roman times and gladiators and insatiable blood lust are not really my thing. I think it would have been fun to live during and pre the 1920s when so many things were changing in North America.

I also get a ticket for reading a book that is more than 500 pgs (515 pages).

One of my favorite gifts was the Irish Wolfhound puppy I was given by my parents when I was a child. I am an only child so she became a close part of my childhood. I also give frequently to the Donor's Choose organization. A great organization that helps teachers get the funding they need for class projects. I Gave to a reading project back in December.

watching the golden globes, but I have a few more tasks to report:

5.3 - The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. This book is about Elizabeth Woodville, who was the wife of King Edward IV, grandmother to Henry VIII (you know, that guy with the wives). The character was fascinating, but this time I felt let down by Gregory. I usually really enjoy her books, but this one was meh.

10.7 - I have to admit this, my favorite show on TV is America's Next Top Model. It is my guilty pleasure. It is a horrible, horrible show, but I LOVE it, and I haven't missed one season yet. I even watch the international versions of the show (Australia, Britain and Canada). I chose to read A Model Summer by Paulina Porizkova, a former model and also a former judge of the show. This book was a semi-autobiographical novel about a fifteen year old girl who goes to Paris to model. Booze, sex, drugs, crazy people, etc. Its not well-written but it gives you an insider view into what a horror modeling can actually be like, and how its probably a really bad things that these really young girls are thrown into so many harmful situations. I read somewhere that Polanski is the actual inspiration for the creepy director in the book, and I'll believe that rumor, especially considering his history, lol.

15.10 - RIP - I read The Missing Girl by Norma Fox Mazer, who died in 2009. She was a prolific YA writer and I had actually never before read one of her books. This book was about five sisters and the creepy child molester that is watching them. At some point one of the sisters is abducted. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad either. It was an easy and enjoyable read. However, for a better book about a similar topic, I recommend
Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott.
For the movie, I watched Ramen Girl, starring the beautiful Brittany Murphy. I was very sad to hear that Ms. Murphy had passed. She was a lovely young woman and a fine actress; I enjoyed her work. Ramen Girl is about an American girl who finds herself stranded in Japan when, after traveling to Tokyo to be with him that he no longer wants to be with her. After eating a bowl of ramen, she decides she wants to learn how to cook ramen, and she becomes the apprentice of a very surly ramen chef. This movie was cute, gave an interesting insight into Japanese culture, and really made me want a bowl of ramen.

35.3 - I read Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. This was actually the first Picoult book I have ever read. I was surprised by how much I liked it. She is much better than her contemporaries (Patterson and Grisham) and the story was enjoyable. It is about a school shooting, and it was kind of like watching a Law & Order episode. However, for a better book on the same subject, I recommend Hate List by Jennifer Brown. One of my top three books read in the last year.

Previous Score: 350
Current Score: 415

message 1772: by Kim (new)

Kim | -9 comments I finished 30.2 by reading Ender's Game and Unwind. I enjoyed both books, but I liked Ender's Game better. They both had characters that were trying to save lives, but I felt like I got to know the main character of Ender's Game better, because the writing felt more sincere.

That makes my total 305 points.

Sarita | 78 comments Finished 30.2 Sci Fi

Read Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, winner of Nebula in 1966 and Utopia by Lincoln Child, written in 2003.

The main difference is the use of technology and the way it is described.
In Algernon, there is some innovative neurosurgery but the novel is mainly focused on the main character's feelings and thoughts.
Utopia however is a typical whodunnit entirely focused on new technologies, robots, holograms etc. developed to the extreme.
Very different approaches for two very good books. Although Utopia kept me turning pages, Algernon will stay with me for much longer.

Sarah Vowell was born Dec. 27, 1969. I was born Dec. 28, 1969. We are both roosters.

Maybe, there is something to be said about sharing a sun/animal sign. I, like Ms. Vowell, love learning and researching stories of history. In her political views, I found a like-minded person that reads between the lines, makes connections, and feels that "A true patriot is by definition skeptical of the government". Unlike the author, I didn't know that these views could land someone a book deal. That's great for her, and I'm happy to have found a new author to read when I'm feeling disconnected from and frustrated by the system and the people who run/abuse it for their own benefit.

Kathleen | 144 comments I completed 5.6 by reading The Laughing Corpse (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #2). While the job of animator and vampire slayer are fictional she also works with the police to help solve murder cases and ges after bad guys. Neither of which appeals to me at all. I am definitely not tough...lol.

My total is now 300.

Leigh (leighc) | 121 comments I completed task 30.7 Multi-tasking by reading The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. Fits tasks 5.10 Alliteration, and 10.4 Winner's choice, it's a 5* book on Donna Jo's list. I gave it 4*, I really enjoyed the story and the history.
