Petra Completed Task 25.7 (Lost Generations) by reading Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck and Ulysses.

Ulysses is 786 pages.

I've posted reviews in the Book Review section. In short, I enjoyed the trip across America with Steinbeck and Charley. It was a thoughtful trip of where, as people, we are and where we're going.
I also enjoyed Ulysses.....although it is work to read. The writing techniques were very effective, in their way, but perhaps a bit "over the top" for regular reading purposes. It was surprising how Joyce got a lifetime (literally: he went through birth, death and all emotions, thoughts in between) in under a day of Dublin, Ireland.

Friendship to me is important. All my life I been searching for good friends. I have very few friends. The ones I have are always too busy so I am lucky if I hang out with them three times in a year. They say you get out of it what you put into it. Well I always put in way too much and reciporcation isn't always mutual.

Jen B (jennybee618) | 891 comments Completed two more tasks:

20.2 BETH MN'S TASK - REVISITING THE PAST It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff by Peter Walsh

I chose to "revisit" task 15.7 from last year's Winter Challenge -- read a book that relates to your New Year's Resolution. I think more in terms of projects for a year instead of resolutions, and one of my big projects for the early part of 2010 is organizing the bedrooms in my house. I'm 6 weeks away from having my second child, and we're doing some major bedroom reshuffling in order to make a nursery, a new bedroom for my 3-year-old, and a playroom out of my home office. In order to do this, we've gotten rid of a fair amount of stuff we've managed to accumulate in the five years that we've lived in our house. This book has been a real motivator in helping me to determine what to let go and what to keep (do I really need every preschool art project my son has created?) We've taken two giant loads to Goodwill, and there's definitely more on the way. It's very freeing to get rid of so much! Definitely glad I listened to this book!

I also completed:
30.5 DIANE'S TASK - POSTHUMOUSLY SPEAKING
The Ten Best Days of My Life by Adena Halpern, which is narrated from Heaven

(Adena Halpern is a Goodreads Author)

AND

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson, which was published posthumously.

message 2316: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 505 comments I just finished 25.6 Island Dreams with a book that takes place on Ireland. Dubliners by James Joyce. This was my first foray into Joyce and I took the easy route with a collection of 15 short stories about different people from Dublin. I really didnt get teh "picture of Dublin" that you are supposed to see after reading this book. MOstly I just thought they were boring stories that had very little to do with the city.

New total: 160

Gina Gallo (mayqueen79) RUNNING TOTAL: 45 Points

5 POINT TASKS: (5*3=15)
1. THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY - In Honor Of Walt Disney-read A Book Related To Your Favorite Disney Film.

My favorite movie is "Sleeping Beauty", so I read The Stepsister Scheme (Princess Novels, #1) by Jim C. Hines by Jim Hines. This book is awesome. It takes the whole fairy tale mythos and turns it on its head. Sleeping Beauty is a tortured soul, Snow White is a slutty sorceress and Cinderella is a naive girl just trying to find her happy-ever-after. You'll like it if you like: fairy tales, myths, girl power, comedy, fantasy and Disney movies.

6. IT'S A DIRTY JOB BUT… -
A. Read A Novel Where The Main Character Does A Job You Could Never Imagine Doing.

I read Promises in Death (In Death #28) by J.D. Robb by J.D. Robb. I could never imagine being a cop in New York City. That would be an incredibly scary way to live. You could never relax. As for the book, it was awesome in the way that all of them are in the series. It must be difficult for her- but she intricately weaves together all of these characters from book to book in stories that never get old. Most importantly, her characters grow with each book. Love them!

10. THE ALLURE OF ALLITERATION - Read A Book Whose Title Contains Alliteration - The Title Must Have 2 Or More Words That Begin With Same Letter Back To Back OR With Only A Short Word In Between (i.e. A, And, In, On, The etc.)

I read Midsummer Magic (Magic Trilogy, #1) by Catherine Coulter for this one by Catherine Coulter. This is one of a trilogy. They are all historical romances set in England and Scotland. They have sweet, funny characters set in an impossibly wonderful world. What is not to love?

10 POINT TASKS (10*X=?)

15 POINT TASKS (15*2=30)

3. WHAT WOMEN WANT (TO READ AND WRITE) - In Honor Of Betty Friedan (Born February 4, 1921 - Died February 4, 2006) Famous Feminist…A. Read A Novel Written By A Female Author From A Series That Has A Female Main Character.

I read Salvation in Death (In Death #27) (Large Print) by J.D. Robb by J.D. Robb. It is another of her "In Death" series. Eve, the heroine, is a cop with a strong moral backbone that is intriguing to watch. While completely capable with crime and criminals, the tenderness of her marriage and her personal relationships leave her completely undone.

8. SILVER SCREEN CELEBRATIONS
A. Read A Book That Relates To Any Holiday That Occurs During This Challenge (December)AND B. Watch A Film That Involves That Same Holiday.

I read A Very Special Delivery (Love Inspired) by Linda Goodnight by Linda Goodnight on my Kindle. It was different. I have never read Christian romantic fiction before. I found some of it patronizing and a bit cheezy, but on the whole, I liked it the characters and the town. The movie that I watched was "Holidays in Handcuffs" with Mario Lopez and Melissa Joan Hart. It was pretty funny- typical, a bit schmaltzy- but fun. It fit perfectly with the story.

5.8 One for the Money by Janet Evanovich

30.7 Jan's Task - Carry Me Down by M.J. Hyland - it fits 25.6 because it is set in the Island Nation of Ireland and 15.9 Part B because Hyland is an author I have never read before.

Few more tasks done.

15.2 I read The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold for the first part of the challenge. (Alice) I enjoyed it, and want to see the movie although I heard its pretty bad. For the second part I read Enna Burning by Shannon Hale, which is part of a fantasy YA series that takes place in a Kingdom called Bayern. Very good book, in fact, one of the better fantasy series I've read in awhile.

25.3 For the first challenge, I read a plum (or purple) colored cover book, Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong by Kelley Armstrong. I really enjoyed it, even though I found the main character to be supremely annoying. For the second part of the challenge (weapon) I read The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, a sci-fi dystopian YA book that was a page turner and excellent; I highly recommend it.

30.10 - For the bright color challenge, I read Princess in Pink by Meg Cabot. I usually enjoy her books (both YA and adult) but I think I am way too old and mature for this particular series. It was a cute and quick read, though. For the number part of the challenge I read Box 21: A Novel by Anders Roslund. Meh. I read this book because of the sticker on the front that said "if you loved The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo you will love this book," but this book is no where near as good as Larson's. This book was basically poorly translated torture porn. I feel like it had all of the elements of a good story, esp. the plot, but it did not work. It will make a good movie, though.

Previous Score: 490
Current Score: 560

I don't think I am going to finish this challenge, but I am going to fight til the end dammit. LOL.

I rounded out BJ Rose's task with Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron (which is completely delightful, and the bad part is that it ends), Benjamin Black's Christine Falls: A Novel (which I've been trying to work into a challenge for almost a year now), and the multi-author audiobook extravaganza The Copper Bracelet (which gave my brain some much-needed relief from too much thinking at work).

20.1 Most Improved Player - Beth MN's Task - Revisiting the Past
Read: Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
This was one of the options for the group read task last challenge (fall 2009; worth 20 points). Yes, I realize this isn't a very original challenge to pick, but I REALLY wanted to read Shutter Island and I can't wait for the movie!!

25.5 Abigail's Task - Odd Man Out
Read: Choke by Chuck Palahiunk

30.2 Helen's Task - Science Fiction - Past and Present
A. Read: Hyperion by Dan Simmons (Hugo Award, 1990)
B. Read: Spin by Robert Charles Wilson (also won a Hugo Award, in 2006)
C. I found a lot of differences between these two novels, the major one being that I found Hyperion to be an absolute chore to read, while I thoroughly enjoyed Spin. The writing styles were very different and Spin was just more in line with how I like my books :) (Although I will admit that I was impressed with the different voice styles in Hyperion as each character told his or her own story, a la Canterbury Tales... I just didn't really like any of them). Another obvious difference was the fact that in Hyperion, Earth is dead and humans have terraformed multiple planets across the universe (and still seem to be the dominant species), while in Spin, Earth is where most of the action takes place, although it is dying (and humans are not necessarily the most intelligent life force out there). You could almost say that Hyperion is what will happen eventually after the novel Spin. In any case, I highly recommend Spin, whereas Hyperion... not so much.

30.5 Diane's Task - Posthumously Speaking
A. Read: Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
B. Read: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson

30.6 Wendy's Task - Winter Vacation Dreams
Read: Slipping Into Paradise by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

My dream vacation would be to New Zealand (and even if it wasn't before, after reading this book, it definitely is now!) I've always wanted to visit both New Zealand and Australia, but after becoming good friends with a "kiwi", I'm leaning more towards spending the majority of my visit in NZ. I'd love to get the chance to visit his home country! Someday...

Katie | 4 comments Finally, I'm entering the challenge. I have completely neglected my books for the last few months. (I blame Gregory Maguire.) I had so many good looking books lined up for this challenge, too--so sad. Reading through the old posts, though, it seems like a few people have fallen off the wagon, no?

Congratulations to those who have already finished!!! I can't believe it. I thought this challenge looked impossible. Y'all are not to be underestimated.

So, for my measly three completed tasks:

5.1 - The Wonderful World of Disney

My favorite Disney movie is The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, so I read Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne for the first time ever. You can see my "review" for the most adorable quote for breakfast/food/Pooh lovers. The book is full of cute little quotes and clever conversations, while I love the movie more for the music and the voices. Love both, though.

15.2 - Adventures with Alice and Lewis

A. Living by the Word: Selected Writings, 1973-87 by Alice Walker
5 stars, some beautiful essays, my favorite was "Everything is a Human Being"

B. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
Ugh. I gave it two stars because it was a good idea, but just miserably executed. The writing was clumsy, the narrative boring, the characters flat. Whenever I had reading time, I'd look at this book and find something else to do. I kept thinking it would get better once Dorothy & Co. showed up, but it didn't.

15.7 - Food + Family and/or Friends = Reading Fun

I read The Tofu Cookbook by Cathy Bauer, which is a bit (sometimes amusingly) antiquated, but has some great nutritional reference info, and has a whole section on how to make your own tofu. I'm afraid I don't have the will to make my own, but she certainly made it sound super fresh and yummy. I made a Tofu Banana Coconut Bread to share with family. It wasn't banana-y enough for me and the coconut didn't add anything, but I do like the idea of putting tofu in breakfast baked goods (for protein and texture/moisture).

30.6 (takes place at my dream vacation spot): I read The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by Lauren Willig. I believe it is the sixth in the Pink Carnation series. Honestly, it was my favorite since the very first book. It takes place in India which is my dream vacation spot. Lots of great characters and not so great characters. A very good read.

The best gift I have ever been given is my basset hound. (You can see him chillin' in bed with a book in my avatar picture!) My sister gave him to me as a college graduation present. It was such a big surprise and I'd wanted my own basset hound for about ten years at that point so it was a very long-awaited present. He has been my favorite gift because he's such a sweet, fun dog. He was with me through all of the years when I was just out of college and single and trying to figure out what to do with my life, and he has always been my entertainment and my comfort. He makes me smile every single day. Such good stress relief!
So for Part A I read a book told from the perspective of a dog: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
For Part B I did a couple of things. Before Christmas I went through my fiance's dresser and donated all of the clothes he never wears to Goodwill (with his permission, of course :-)). Then after the Haiti earthquake I donated more clothes and canned goods to a local food and clothing drive.

That's funny, I'm struggling through Shades of Grey right now. I loved the Thursday Next series, so I was thinking maybe I would have done better with the book not audio, but maybe it's just me. :)

Melissa | 172 comments A couple more down!

10.8 Oh Canada: Fifth Business by Robertson Davies, who is Canadian, and the story is set in Canada. A really good book with a lot to think about... but not a fast read or even a very easy one. Requires a bit of savoring.

25.5 Odd Man Out: The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan. I can't think of another 5, 10, or 15 pointer this task fits for me, and it is another good installment in the series.

congrats Donna Jo!

Nicole | 116 comments Finished 35.2 I went for Warm Beach - if only that's where I could be, there's snow on the ground and more coming tonight!
Warm Springs: Traces of a Childhood at FDR's Polio Haven I thought this looked good, but it was a depressing badly written memoir of a girl who suffered from polio.
On the Beach This was an interesting book about what might happen following nuclear war.
