Resolution: I've just remodeled and turned my living room into a library. My goal for the new year is to organize my books and reading lists. I also want to start tackling my tremendous pile of unread books (400+). This reader needs a plan to read as fast as I accumulate books from the Goodwill and library.

10.5 The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
15.6 a. Fruits Basket, vol. 4 by Natsuki Takaya
Fruits Basket is about a family with a curse- certain members of the family turn into animals from the Chinese Zodiac when they are hugged by a member of the opposite sex or put into certain stressful situations. There is a whole story arc in this volume about one character, Momiji, who turns into a very cute little rabbit! And it just so happens that the very best gift I have ever been given was my first pet rabbit, Gardenia. My parents bought him for me when I was 11 years old- I had been begging for a pet rabbit since I first learned to speak and I loved him so much. He died when I was 19 and I still miss him every day.
I have two new bunnies now, and I also love them very much, but I bought them for myself. ;)
b. recently, my boyfriend and i began volunteering at PAWS, a local no-kill animal shelter. we go in once a week and play with kitties and i try to resist the urge to take them all home.
TOTAL: 390
i'm at this annoying point in the challenge where i've read one out of two required books for a lot of tasks, so my point total is lower than it would otherwise be. bah!

Accomplished a few more over the weekend...
15.5 Readers Around the World:
From Morocco, I chose Donna's 5-star Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. A re-read for me but having just watched the new production of Emma on PBS I was in the mood for Austen! As good as ever for me!
From France, I chose Paraph's 5-star Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. I have not read this before, and it reminded me strongly of Old Man's War and Ender's Game, but of course Starship Troopers came first. I thought his philosophy was interesting and I can see why it is controversial, but as a story I thought it was a little weak.
25.2 International Friendship Month: Friends in High Places by Marne Davis Kellogg - a fun, light read about a 'retired' jewel thief and her attempt to keep her secret past a secret. Oddly enough, the heroine in this book keeps coming back to the fact that she doesn't trust anyone enough to have any true friends. I can sympathize with her a little, not because I have trust issues or a secret criminal past, but because to me true friends are as rare and precious as jewels. The real investment is in the time you give to build and maintain deep friendships.
35.4 Read about your Resolution: I am one of those people who doesn't "do" resolutions; but I do have a goal for my 41st year, to start writing fiction again. So I have read:
This Year You Write Your Novel by Walter Mosley - a short book, just squeaking in at 103 pages, but still I found lots of info in it that I think will help me (once I stop spending all my free time trying to finish this challenge! :)
Written In Blood by Caroline Graham. I could do so much worse than emulate Caroline Graham. Her writing is smart and her characters are amazingly complex and complete. I am so sad, I have now read all of her Inspector Barnaby books, so no more of those to look forward to.

I also read the Graphic Novel Welcome to the Jungle by Jim Butcher. It is a prequel to his Dresden series. I don't have a lot of experience with Graphic Novels but I really liked this one. I thought the story was a good one and told very well.
So this brings my point total to 160. I might make it to 200, but I am not holding my breath. LOL
Laurie Halse Anderson is my first GoodReads author.

50.1 – ROSEANN’S MIDWAY TASK - GO FOR THE GOLD--THE 2010 WINTER OLYMPIC CHALLENGE:
Read: Cup of Gold by John Steinbeck
This was a HORRIBLE attempt at historical fiction. It was Steinbeck’s first book, published in 1929. Skip this and read his other books that are deservedly classics! I gave it 1 star.
Read: The Skeleton in the Closet by M.C. Beaton
Interesting little cozy mystery. This is a new author for me. I gave it 3 stars.

Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov (5 stars)
and
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson (2 stars)
LOVED Lolita, but Jekyll and Hyde left me bored and wishing that I had left that story alone. I like the version that I thought was true (based on little pieces that I heard about it and put togeter) much better. The Victorian language put me to sleep multiple times and I just never really got the sense of horror and creepiness that I was expecting.

30.1 Celebrate the End of the Decade:
A. Evenings at the Argentine Club by Julia Amante
B. Coraline by Neil Gaiman

30.9 - I read the 2009 Newbery Winner The Graveyard Book and The Underneath for the Honor book. Although I enjoyed them both I preferred The Graveyard Book. The mystery aspect was well written and as an adult reader I was never bored. This would be a great book to read together with a child.

15.7 Murder Uncorked (by GOODREADS AUTHOR Michelle Scott) I was delighted to find an easy recipe in this book as I am not a cook by any stretch of the imagination. "After Hours Pasta" was easy AND tasty! Plus reading it was a fun way to learn more about wine.

30.3 Read 825 Pages Or More. Any Genre! No Re-Reads For This
I embraced Beatlemania for this task, and chose two books that contained extensive interviews with Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
Pages Read: 654 + 176 = 830

Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles (Hardcover, 654 pages)
Barry Miles was in McCartney's entourage during the 1960s. This book was created after "hundreds" of interviews of McCartney by Miles, and supplemented by the printed memoirs of other individuals interacting with McCartney during the 1960s, by newpaper articles, and by checking up on dates and locations of events described by McCartney. About 90% of the Book centered on the 1960s portion of Paul's life. I found it fascinating, Paul McCartney was always my favorite Beatle.
Lennon Remembers: The Full Rolling Stone Interviews from 1970 by Jann S. Wenner, John Lennon (Hardcover, 176 pages)
These are interviews John Lennon and Yoko Ono gave together to Jann Wenner, the founder of ROLLING STONE, shortly after the Beatles broke up in 1970. Wenner adds footnotes so that today's readers can understand the events that Lennon refers to during his interview (like: Manson and the murder of Sharon Tate)

Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles is 654 pages.
