WINTER CHALLENGE 2009-2010 COMPLETED TASKS

TASK 5.1 - DISNEY For this task, my favorite Disney movie is Fantasia, especially the section with the dancing mushrooms. I read The Documents in the Case by Dorothy L. Sayers, which is a mystery where a mushroom expert dies from eating poisoned mushrooms. In reality, though, the mystery about the mushrooms is secondary to the books actual topic, which is "The Meaning of LIfe."
TASK 5.3 - READ ABOUT A MONARCH For this task I chose option B, read a non-fiction book about a monarch. I read The Lady in the Tower: The Fall of Anne Boleyn by Alison Weir. If you are at all interested in the subject of Henry VIII's wives, this book is excellent. Weir discusses many legends and theories surrounding the fall of Henry's second wife.

January 18th Marked The Beginning Of The Lewis And Clark Bicentennial (1804-1806). The Expedition Laid Much Of The Groundwork For The Westward Expansion Of The US. In Honor Of This, Read One Fiction And One Non-Fiction (Or 2 Non-Fiction BUT NOT 2 FICTION) Book Related To This Time Period.
A. One Book Needs To Be About One Of The Following People: Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark Or Sacajawea (Or Can Involve All). The Person In Question Needs To Be Involved In AT LEAST 1/2 Of The Book).
Sacagawea by Flora Warren Seymour
B. And The Other About One Of These Events: The Louisiana Purchase, The Western Expansion, Or Exploration And/Or Pioneers During The Time Period Of 1800 To 1880.
C. When Claiming Points For This Task - Briefly Explain (3-5 Sentences) Why You Would Have Liked/Disliked To Have Lived During That Time Period.
The Irish-Americans by Watts
The Irish settle in Chicago in 1860 (Western Expansion from Ireland to New York to Chicago) I cannot imagine living in the 1800’s. I am very outspoken, liberal, gay and Jewish and I can’t imagine that would have gone over well. LOL! Living through the politics of 2010 is a nightmare for me. Where’s my public option health care and my Democratic Senator. Oh the horrors.

I really hated Blue Sky July, there is a reason people don't typically get their diaries published, because they are self-indulgent and whiny.

My Total 260

30.1 Bonnie's Task - I read City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare - It was published in 2008 and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - A movie was made in 2006 about it.
30.2 Helen's Task - I read Neuromancer by William Gibson - It was a 1984 Nebula and Hugo award winner and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld - It is a present novel. I found Neuromancer difficult to understand and kept having to re-read parts of it because of it's technical nature and wording. Uglies, on the otherhand, doesn't attempt to explain the workings of the technology and doesn't use many technical terms.

30.8 A. First Across the Continent. The Story of The Exploring Expedition of Lewis and Clark in 1804-5-6 by Noah Brooks and Sacajawea by Anna Lee Waldo (1424 pages)
So glad I committed to Sacajawea. I highly recommend it! I would not want to live during this time period in this location, as I think it was probably very hard for women in the new frontier. I think it would have been interesting to see history unfolding as America expanded, but I think the hardships out-weigh that. That said, it would have been wonderful to meet these characters as they all seem to be so interesting.

The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz(Goodreads author)
(5 stars)
Most often, when I give a book 5 stars, it is because I found it to be profound and poetic. This book, on the other hand, received my highest rating simply for its enjoyment factor. I never read mysteries, but this story of a family of private investigators, was so colorful and endearing that I couldn't wait for reading time. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

There are so many different levels of friendship, but I consider a good friend to be someone who you always feel safe and comfortable expressing your true feelings to without fear of judgment. A friend will be by your side in good times and bad, and will listen when you just need to talk.

Thanks did we really read 81 books, no wonder I'm exhausted.
A few more tasks...
30.5 For the book narrated by a deceased character, I read Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. This book is excellent and comes highly recommended, esp. for those of you that like YA lit. It was wonderful, different, inspiring, etc. It's about a young girl who dies in a tragic hit and run accident, and finds herself in Elsewhere, where she has to learn to deal with death, age backwards and find love and work, etc.
For the book published posthumously, I read Suite Française by Irene Nemirovsky. Ms. Nemirovsky wrote the book while living in occupied France (she was an ex-pat Russian Jew who had converted to Catholicism). Unfortunately, her life was tragically ended when the Nazis sent her to Auschwitz, and the manuscript survived because it was smuggled in a suitcase along with her daughters, who the Nazis unsuccessfully tried to hunt down. This book was also incredible, as a portrait of what life was like for the French people during the occupation. It is incredibly unfortunate that Ms. Nemirovsky was lost, because I feel like the world lost a great talent when she was murdered.
35.4 New Years Resolution - My resolution has to do with eating better. Namely, not eating Cheez Doodles and Pop Tarts as much. The fiction book I read was
Fat Cat by Robin Brande, a YA book featuring a junk food loving teen who decides to adopt the diet of our ancestors (namely the hominids) as a science experiment, and goes as far to try and adopt their lifestyle (walking, no cars, no cellphones, etc.) The book was cute and fun, and the main character learns a lot about herself.
The non-fiction book I read was Raw Food Life Force Energy: Enter a Totally New Stratosphere of Weight Loss, Beauty, and Health by Natalia Rose. Rose basically recommends a diet of raw, natural foods for health reasons, and while I felt like she had many intelligent points and some actually tasty sounding recipes (along with a fairly easy plan for working your way towards a better diet) I think she is still being to stringent. I just like bacon wayyy to much.
50 point - I read The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause, a teen vampire book that was surprisingly good, and for the sport portion I read The Skating Rink by Roberto Bolano, a murder/mystery/love triangle featuring embezzling government officials, crazy buskers, poets, and a lovely ice skater who is going for Olympic gold, all in the coastal Catalan town Z.
