Leigh (leighc) | 121 comments I'm finally posting a task, just finished task 25.5 Abigail's task, Odd Man Out. I read The Messiah of Stockholm by Cynthia Ozick. This was my bookclub's selection for the month, and I can't say I really enjoyed it! Off to do more "fun" reading now :)

25.10--Emily/MASQUERADE by Melissa De La Cruz

This is the second novel in the "Blue Bloods" series. I had not read the first novel, but was able to get caught up with no problems. I liked the twist that De La Cruz put on the vampire legend. There are three "bloods" in the world: red bloods (humans), blue bloods ("good" vampires who have a red blood familiar they feed off of), and silver bloods who once were slaves of the blue bloods, but now feed off of and kill other vampires. The story will definitely continue as there was a cliff-hanger ending and I will plan on reading the next installment.

I saw the books cover with it's eerie white masked person staring at me from across the library and knew I had found my book for this challenge. I would be glad to post a copy of the cover if someone would remind me how to do so.

and

RUN, BONG-GU, RUN by Byun Byuing-Jun

This beautifully drawn Manwha Manga graphic novel tells the story of Bong-Gu who travels with his mother from their small village to the big city in order to find Bong-Gu's lost father. A sweet story with a surprising and happy ending.

This brings me to 335 points!

Andreea (andyyy) | 59 comments I've finished my first two tasks. I've reread Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass for the Group Reads challenge and read Scrisori catre fiul meu by Gabriel Liiceanu (published in 2008) and reread Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling (which was made into a movie in 2009) for task 30.1. - CELEBRATE THE END OF THE DECADE (although the decade won't actually be over until the end of 2010). So I now have 50 points.

Harry Potter wasn't as interesting as it seemed at 13, but I'd still give it 3 and a half stars. The Alice books on the other had were wonderful, this is the third time I read them and each time I discover something new. Liiceanu's book was brilliant too, I hope it'll soon be translated into English. I would have never imagined that a philosopher could have written such a heartwarming and unseriously funny book.

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments Last night I finished the Stupidest Angel for the 20 point group read task. I enjoyed the book and found it good fun. This is what I wrote in the discussion thread on the book:

"This is such a great book. A definite alternative to sickly sweet Christmas stories. It was nice to have the chance to read a light hearted read which made me laugh. I loved the bit where the dead could talk to each other. It was really funny to hear their observations (or rather their thoughts on what they hear) of live people. It will make me think twice what I talk about in a Graveyard from now on! I normally don't particularly enjoy zombie books but in this case it added to the brilliance! I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is fed up and rather cynical over the christmas season!"

Bunny (neonbunny) | 72 comments 20.3 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll
25.2 Fruits Basket, vol. 3 by Natsuki Takaya
To me, friendship means a lot of different things, but most of all it means having someone you can depend on. I try to be a very reliable and dependable friend; I hate to break plans or let anyone down, and I expect the same in return- especially since I don't live near any of my friends anymore. I moved to a new city and haven't really made any friends here yet, so I really try to make it count when I get to see my old friends again.

Elizabeth (NC) | 184 comments I stayed up WAY too late last night and finished Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I haven't done that in a long time--but I just hit a point where I had to know what happened next, and then what happened next and then...I don't know how many times I told myself, "Just one more chapter" until finally I gave up and realized I was in it until the end. I'm going to have to wait to read the next one--on a list from the library, but that is probably good. I can't do another night like that for a long time!

It was for 10.6 (5* book from someone who lives near me)

Jessica (jess0702) | 127 comments I'm always so impressed by all the people who already have a ton of points before me- I wish my schedule gave me more time to read, but what can you do? Anyway, here's my first one:

35.3 (The time task): The Year of the Flood

For anyone who likes dystopian novels, and especially if you read Atwood's Oryx and Crake, this is a must-read novel. The characters are fascinating and her descriptions of Earth post-apocalyptic event are scary because they are so easily imaginable. I often found myself bringing this to the copier with me at work in the mornings as I was making my work for my students for the day in order to get it done faster.

Okay, I'm really following my own advice...NOT. Ten books read, only 4 tasks completed, but I do love this challenge, so many books that I have wanted to read fit, and the TBR list just gets longer. And oh, yes, Roll Tide!

35.2 Two books from a winter vacation: Cozy Fire: Fire Study and Cozy, by Maria Snyder and Parnell Hall, total 753 pps, read on 12/5/2009 and 12/1/2009.

I would say these two were only OK, I was particularly disappointed in Fire Study. POison Study was a good book, but I haven't particularly liked either of the others.

message 264: by Emily (new)

Emily | 130 comments I completed task 15.9 (out with the old, in with the new) by reading the following:

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume - I was tempted by this book when I was little because it had the name "Margaret" in the title (my middle name) and because the cover was pretty. But I figured that it probably wasn't for me because it also had "God" in the title and I wasn't religious (I also didn't read Their Eyes Were Watching God for the same reason until adulthood and it is one of my absolute favorite books). The used book store just happened to have this book with the cover that I admired as a youth, which added to the fun of reading it. I wonder what I would have thought of this as a youth. One thing that I really appreciated about the story was how the girls all decide to never purchase the sanitary pads that are advertised to them in school via their menstruation instructional video and presentation; that's just awesome!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - I loved this and am excited to read Catching Fire soon! Like Elizabeth (NC) above, I eventually got to a point where I just needed to finish! The Hunger Games reminded me of the game show in Running Man so I finally got around to watching that film and I must say, Hunger Games was a lot better!

The Matchlock Gun by Walter D. Edmonds The Matchlock Gun by Walter D. Edmonds
Down Ryton Water by Eva Roe Gaggin (which I had never heard of before--and I had to order through InterLibrary Loan).
Both were historical fiction, Matchlock Gun set in the Dutch New York valleys in the 1700s and Ryton Water set in England, Holland, and Plymoth Colony in the 1600s. Down Ryton Water was written for an older audience, and was much wordier, but did show Puritan in a much more human vein than is often depicted. I was actually a little disappointed in both books and am not sure either has stood the test of time all that well.

10.5- Patrick Swayze- I've had the time of my life. This was published in September- my birthday month. I found it really sad- I'd been waiting for the library reservation to come through.
25.6 Stephanie Us- Island Dreams - Martine McCutcheon. This is set in the UK- Mainly in London, part of it is in Cornwall. It's written by a former soapstar and it is an enjoyable enough story- but not written in the best style. It is another one I'd wanted to read.

Cynthia- earlier in the challenge I also completed 5.1 Peter Pan in Scarlet - Geraldine McCaughan.I think I might have been put down as another Kim for that one, possibly.

Thanks, Roseann! Now I have more books added to my TBR shelf. They both sound like pretty interesting books. I agree with you about the camping part. I doubt I'd been able to survive what they went through either :)

And kiki, I really liked your perspective too. Cars are definitely a plus nowadays for helping us get around and travel versus having to depend on animals. At least the motorized version are a bit more reliable. Electric blankets are pretty nice--compared to the way they used to warm beds. Not sure I'd want to risk a hot coal sparking and setting my blankets on fire!

Janice | 714 comments I finished 15.1 (Dark Comedy book and movie)

Book: Harold and Maude by Colin Higgins (5 stars)

Movie: The Big Kahuna (1 star)

Harold and Maude is my favorite movie of all-time. It has it all, including a very unique premise and characters, sincerity, deep questions and philosophies, love, and hysterical scenes and lines. Strangely enough, I never knew it had started as a book, so I was very happy to find a copy at a used book store. I was not disappointed. The book, too, is excellent. How can you beat a scene where a 79 year-old women steals a police officer's motorcycle?
Where else can you find a character that would "renovate" a Jaguar Sports Coupe into a hearse? (If you haven't seen the movie, I'd highly recommend it for the second part of this task).

I also watched The Big Kahuna. Black comedies are, also, my favorite genre. I usually love movies with Kevin Spacey and Danny Devito. Unfortunately, I really disliked this one. It is more a play than a movie about corporate lubricant salesmen. The whole film is their banal conversations about life and careers. These type of people drive me crazy in real life. Therefore, I don't know what I was thinking when I chose this one.

Manday | 307 comments I have finished task 5.4. I read The Tale of Despereaux Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread, which won the Newberry Medal in 2004. I chose this book because I recently saw the movie and it seemed disjointed, I wanted to know what was in the book that had been left out. Turns out, not much - if anything the disjointed feeling in the movie comes from them trying to add things and make it more complicated. The book was decent, but nothing amazing. Three stars.
