7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
I'll do this one real quick...I was at my wedding rehearsal dinner, and everyone was gathered around the television. My anniversary is 6/18/1994.

1. Dad was a small child, as was my mom.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Nearly eleven years before my birth.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
Ten years before my birth.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
5+ years before my birth.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
My parents experienced this, but I wouldn't be around for a little while longer.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
Soon to arrive in the world. Probably sleeping.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Watching it live on CNN with my parents.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
Just turned two. Saw the television reports.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Was four. Watched the coverage with my parents.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Came back from Little Five Points with my dad; mom told us about it as soon as we entered the house.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
I was in 4th grade; I was quite interested in politics at the time, so I was watching the live coverage of the election. Was sad that Gore lost.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
4th grade. Read about it in the paper during breakfast.
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
Was in fifth grade. They didn't tell us right away. We were quickly rushed into the auditorium for an emergency announcement. Mrs. Kurtz (our obnoxious principal) told us to call home if we had any family in the NYC area. I used this as an excuse to get out of class. I knew that my cousins (who live on the UWS) were never in any danger.

ill begin here because though i was born in 85 at such a young age i wasn't too aware of the news, this is the first news thing i remember clearly.. i remember watching coverage on the TV in the living room, my uncle was just about graduating high school at the time if he hadn't already, i forget, he had a toy assault rifle he showed me and was talking to me about what happened and was talking about if there was going to be a draft or not..
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
i forget this one is not as important to me, but i do remember watching some of it on TV and the endless coverage of the trial..
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
i heard about it after it happened and probably saw coverage of it but wasn't too aware of it
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
again the same though i was a little more aware of this, until being a upperclassmen in high school news and current events kind of went over my head, it was sad =\
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
dont remember where i was just remember it happening
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
probably watching coverage, in my house, i forget..
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
again, i have to be more aware of the news =\ i didn't know about this..
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
i was a junior in high school, when it happened I was in health class and someone came into the class room and said that the trade centers were hit, and it didn't really sink in for a while, but when it did there was a combination of solemness and franticness, one of the people who were in that health class had her father working there. the next period in chemistry we spent listening to the radio about what happened, after that i forget, but they had to block of part of the town i live in because people were swamping it to get their own videos of the smoke and stuff, you could see the sky line from certain parts of my town.. after it happened the radio stations went full request for a while, and everyone seemed to try to support each other more so then anytime I've ever seen, strangers didn't seem so strange for a while..

#4 & #5 Still a youngin'
#6 I don't remember where I was when it started, but I was seven and living in Atlanta when it was going on. I remember almost missing the school bus one morning, because my mom was watching coverage of it and lost track of time.
#7 I was ten and with my older sister at my dad's house in Kansas, where we spent our summers. We had a daily ritual of watching Days of Our Lives, and the footage of the car chase interrupted the programming, which kind of pissed me off.
#8 No memories of this one.
#9 I was in the fifth grade on my way home from school, and my best friend's mom told me to be careful, because this building in Oklahoma City had been bombed. (I was in Boulder, CO, so really there was no danger.) The thing I remember about this one, besides the really gruesome pictures, was that before they found out who did it, everyone thought Muslim terrorists were responsible. Go figure.
#10. Thirteen & starting eight grade. I was up late watching tv when the story broke. She was alive when I went to bed, but when I woke up she had passed. I wasn't a big Di fan, but it was still pretty shocking.
#11 I was a junior in high school, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me why people had voted for that dimwit.
#12 No memory.
#13 Senior in high school and I was starting my first period class when I found out that a plane crashed into the Pentagon. I absolutely did not believe it, because I thought "They wouldn't let that happen." Second period I had off, so I went to the Senior Balcony, where we had a tv with cable to watch the news and see what was what. That's when I found out about the towers. At the beginning of the period the first plane had already hit, and by the end of the period the towers didn't exist. We went around in a daze on that day. The whole thing was so unfathomable.

In school. One of the teachers came out to the bus as we were leaving for home, and told us about it. We were glued to the TV for 3 days afterward, following everything that happened. It was all very stunning, and is burned into my memory.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Don't recall what I was doing -- but I sure remember it happening.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
Living in New York State. I recall the news reports. We had no idea how close he really came to being killed.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
Living in Baltimore. I was home from work that day when the news report broke into the regular programs. I remember having a premonition about the teacher being on there during the news coverage in the days leading up to the launch -- that she would not return home.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
I was watching the start of the first game of the World Series at Candlestick on TV.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
I was working in Pittsburgh at a railroad training center. I was in a simulator room with a bunch of students when we heard that the attack had begun. It was very creepy. We were all very quiet.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
I don't recall what I was doing -- but I remember watching on TV and thinking wtf is wrong with that guy?
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
Don't remember the details, but I did watch the news reports about it.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
I was working. My wife called me that morning and told me about it. She was really shaken up.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was at home in Lancaster, PA. My parents were visiting from North Carolina. We sat and watched the news as they worked on her in the tunnel. It was weird.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000
Afflicted with severe depression. I was living in Texas at the time. Bush was Governor, so we knew what a jerk he was.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Don't remember this at all.
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001
At home in Texas watching the Today show. I'll never forget how stunned they all were. Matt Lauer was speechless. The guy from CNBC came on all covered with white dust. This still give me chills. The horror of it all lingers in my mind. I was supposed to leave the next day for a conference in Phoenix. I just knew that traveling by plane would never be the same. The conference was cancelled, of course, as no one flew for several days.
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
I wasn't born yet.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
I remember watching this volcano blowing up on TV. It felt like the end of the world was approaching.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
I've seen the news clip of Secret Service agents wrestling Reagan to the ground, but I don't remember what I was doing at that moment.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
Sadly, I watched the Challenger explode as it happened, on television. I really thought it was a joke at first.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Like Larry, I was watching the start of the World Series game at Candlestick on TV. By the way, Larry, it was Game 3; the 1st 2 games were played in Oakland, across the bay.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
I don't remember the actual start; I just remember being terrified that I might be called up, as there were rumors rampant that President Bush might invoke the draft again.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Ah, yes...Game 5 of the 1994 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets. It was a tight game, and the series was tied at 2, when..."the Juice is loose!" The Knicks won the game, but lost the series. And the glove didn't fit.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
I was in my senior year in college, hanging out at the commons on campus, when we all watched the compound burn to the ground.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
I heard about the bombing from the security guard at the building where I worked; he was one of those guys who wanted to be a cop or a Marine so bad, yet couldn't make it past the recruiting stage. He kept going on about getting a gun and shooting some camel jockey varmint terrorists. Really.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997) My girlfriend at the time and I were watching the tube when the news broke. I remember feeling pity for Diana, rather than sorrow, as she had just now seemed to find happiness in her life.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 20000
I stayed up all night to watch this story. One thing I remember most is Tim Russert's early assessment of the three things that would determine the Presidential outcome: Florida, Florida, and Florida. And, wow, he was right. I recall feeling disappointment when the Supreme Court declared Bush the winner. I would later feel hatred towards the man.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Huh?
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/20010
I had been living in NC for about a year. I was outside my office, smoking, when a co-worker of mine pulling up to a parking spot and said, "some plane just hit the World Trade Center." This was about 8:50, a few minutes after the 1st plane hit the South Tower. Joe and I realized this was no accident.
The rest of that day, what with the 2nd plane hitting the North Tower, and both towers eventually collapsing, crept slowly, as if I was watching a beloved family member slowly die. I found it impossibly hard to sleep for days after that day.
I wasn't born yet.

13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001).
I was in Mrs. Critchfield's second grade class writing in my journal. The announcement came on and the teacher turned on her television and we all watched the news. Everyone was crying but I remember not knowing what was going on...I thought it was a movie or something. Then most of my class got taken home for the rest of the day.

When O.J.'s trial was broadcast, though, I was in my fourth grade class. I think two of us were the only ones who weren't going, "Yeah, get him!" Of course, none of us really knew much about the trial, and considering where I grew up, I bet a fair amount of people in my class were racist. (Well, I mean, I know a lot of people I went to school with were/are racists.)
A girl came into my math class (junior year trig) on 9/11 and was crying, saying that a plane had flown into the WTC. My math teacher turned on the television, and we witnessed the planes flying into the second tower and into the Pentagon. It was the only time he ever showed any emotion at all.
Later that day, there was a sonic boom as President Bush was returning to Washington, I think? He flew over our house, which was pretty cool, although it scared me half to death because I thought we were being bombed again. I had nightmares and was afraid of planes for several years after that.
Some of these post-1985 I don't even remember. Other important dates for me, personally, include March 10th-14th, 2008, when I was glued to the internet because of the rioting in Lhasa and other parts of Tibet, and 26/11/2008, the Mumbai attacks-- one of my friends is a Mumbai native and was there, so we called her to make sure she was okay.
When President Obama was elected, the next day my students were trying to get out of class. "Isn't it a holiday today, since Obama was elected?" HA!

10(when Princess Di was killed): the next day was my first day at school, and I was preparing for that important event; however my grandma was very sad.
11(when Bush was elected), this was soooo important for me, I was ten, VERY interested in politics. The election was the main topic everywhere, especially at school(in Armenia speaking about politics is the same as for british people speaking about weather). Gore promised to accept The Armenian Genocide, so we weren't happy when Bush was elected.
13:( 9/11), it was night in Armenia(morning in the US), we were watching TV, when a special program began telling about this and showing videos. so we knew about this almost 30 minutes later. My aunt was in New York, so my mom was VERY worried. we weren't able to connect with her (the telephone lines weren't working properly), she called a few hours later and told that everything was ok with them. And I remember clearly the words of my Grandpa "America wouldn't swallow this".

On Sept. 11th, I was sleeping all day because I had worked the night before. When my clock radio went off I heard a snippet of news about the attack and, confused and still sleepy, I called my mother and asked "Mom, are we at war?" She told me to turn on the TV.

In my mamma's ovaries.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
I was 4.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
I was almost 5.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I was in fifth grade, watching it in science class.

Also see #7.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I remember being in my room I was renting and my landlady calling me to come and watch the news. We were both in shock.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
The only thing I remember about that election is that when Bush came to San Diego, he stayed at the hotel I worked at. I remember the two top floors were being blocked off and he came in and left on my days off. Never saw him. I had more fun when the Miami Dolphins stayed there. :-)
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
I don't remember this at all.
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
My husband and I both worked second shift back then. Our routine was getting up about 10-ish and working out together. My husband woke me up earlier and told me what happened. We watched a little of it on the news but then left for work. When I got to work there was a note on the employee elevator saying our call center was closed. I worked at Verizon Wireless and the company closed down all their call centers in high-rises for the day. I went home and watched it all on tv for hours.

--??
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
--?? again. (I smoked a lot of weed in the 90s) This one has made a huge impression on me, though. When I heard it happened in a tunnel it really freaked me out and I got a super-clear visual impression of it. Every time I drive through a tunnel I think about it. That is one of the scariest car things I can think of, being chased through a tunnel!
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
--??
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)

That was cool, Sally! Thanks!

--I was at school. The brought TVs in and let us watch."
This is my memory, too, only that can't be right because I graduated from HS in 1981. I must be confusing it with the assassination attempt on Reagan.

1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not yet born.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Too young to remember it. The memories I have are probably later pictures.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
No memory of it.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I remember that really well, because we had all been following that launch because of the teacher, and I had a Jewish kids' magazine that had a big article on Judith Resnik, one of the astronauts. I remember hearing about it in the computer/resource room and making some clever but hugely inappropriate 3rd grader's joke and being told off.
I remember being very sad about it, as if I had known both women personally.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
I remember worrying about my aunt and uncle even though they lived in LA.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
I attended a very hippie progressive school through eighth grade; there were only four of us in my grade that year. We talked about the ramifications in our homeroom, and decided to hold a rally for the Kurdish people. The school let us spend most of that month planning it: going down to the Parks & Rec office on our own to get permits, flyering, contacting other schools. We got a permit for the plaza outside the United Nations! I rented a PA and tried to get a band to come play. REM was playing Saturday Night Live, and I spent two days trying to reach them through NBC. The day of the rally it POURED. We realized we should have gotten the 100 person plaza instead of the 1000 person plaza. We had gotten a stage donated but not a cover, so bands couldn't play. We huddled and gave speeches and played a mix that I had made, which included Elvis Costello's "Whats So Funny 'Bout Peace Love And Understanding?" (retrospective cool points) and White Lion's "When the Children Cry" (deduct cool points).
I learned a lot from it.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
We lived in Canada by then. We were headed out to some family friend's house for dinner, but we were all glued to the TV. We were late for dinner.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
That was the year I had to take Canadian History, which was a lousy class with a lousy teacher who was very anti-American. For some reason I remember the event in connection with her, as well as on the news. Also, it was a friend's birthday, and every year when something bad happened on that day, I felt bad that her birthday was sullied yet again.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Senior year of high school. I remember following it on the news.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Sally, a lot of your answers are similar to mine, I think since we're pretty close in age. I was also working at summer camp, but it had just ended for the summer. We were at my ex's family's cabin near Syracuse, with a thousand rambunctious relatives. Incidentally, Zu has developed a fine collection of horribly offensive Princess Di jokes.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
My friends and I were/are very political. We had set up a War Room with a number of TVs tuned to different channels, and a couple of computers on the internet. We watched all night. Tom Brokaw was hilarious without sleep! "Pardon me. I was just eating some crackers."
As it began to look like Gore had lost, in my own sleep deprived state, I sent a tongue-in-cheek all campus e-mail to my alma mater, suggesting that they might contact Gore since the college was looking for a new President, and he wasn't looking like he'd be getting the national job.
The weeks that followed were far more horrifying than that night, when we still thought the process would hold up.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
I think I was worried about my friends in Seattle.
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
My car had died a couple of weeks before and I hadn't bought a new one yet, so I was taking the bus from downtown to Towson on the days I was doing research for the college. The bus passed by an electronic ticker on a building that said "Plane Hits World Trade Center", which I pictured like one of those little biplanes hitting the Empire State Building decades ago. When I got to the library, everyone was watching TV. A little later we got sent home, but I didn't want to go home. I took the bus down to a friend's house and we watched the news all day and all night. I think I stayed there overnight. We kept trying to go someplace and do something, but there was nothing to do. The blood banks were turning people away.
It's still fresh in my mind. I find it hard to believe that there are kids learning about it now as a historical event rather than a memory.
Where Were You When. . . .
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
That was 25 years before I was born.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Wasn't alive.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
Not yet born.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)

I was almost a year old. Strangely enough, I don't remember it!
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
Don't remember.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
I don't remember-I was 6. I didn't find out about that till I was around 17, and I was shocked that he got away with it.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
I have no idea of what happened there.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
What??? (I'm from Ireland, a lot of this is completely unfamiliar to me).
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was 9. I remember seeing it on the news at home with my family. I didn't really know about Princess Diana...my parent's were in shock.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
Not a clue, I don't remember. I stayed up all night to watch the news when ye had to vote between him and Kerry in 2004 though. I got the shock of my life when he was elected twice- I'm sorry, but what were the people who voted for him (Bush) thinking?
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
?????
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
Em, I was 13, in first year of secondary school. It was a really weird day at school....there was this weird athmosphere...everyone knew something major was happening but the teachers wouldn't tell us, and on the bus home everyone was completely bewildered. None of us knew what was going on. When I got home, the news was on...I got the shock of my life. I didn't understand why anyone would do such a thing. Now that I study politics, things are a lot clearer...
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
That was 25 years before I was born.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Wasn't alive.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
Not yet born.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
Not yet born.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)

Where Were You When. . . .
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not yet born.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
I must've been in school. I only remember the aftermath.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
Sitting at home, watching it on TV.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Watched the whole thing on TV. In fact I remember where I was walking the morning I was listening to the news on my Walkman and one of the news stories was that O.J. Simpson's wife and a man had been found murdered in front of her house, and O.J. had been informed of it and would be heading back from Chicago.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
I'm sure I watched the whole shebang on TV.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Watching TV late at night at my parents' house. I went and woke up my mother and she came down and watched some of the coverage. Then I felt kind of guilty for waking her up. Do you wake up someone when Princess Di dies, or do you let them find out about it the next day?
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
I remember Al Gore conceding and then taking it back...

How does one watch an exploded television?

I noticed the WA earthquake on the list. For that one, I was at work in Bellevue, WA. All the employees wandered out into the parking lot and started jawing about other earthquakes they had experienced. I walked home to check on things (water heater, etc.), then hung out the rest of the day.

Stuff fell off the shelves and the power went out. I sent the employees home, cleaned up a bit, then wandered around town talking to people.

Stuff fell off the shelves and the po..."
We were living in the bay area at the time, and my dad was laying bricks for our front porch. He kept right on working like nothing was happening, while my mom and I watched him from the front doorway.
My story was nothing compared to a guy that I worked with (several years after the quake) that was on the bottom deck of the Bay Bridge when the section from the top fell in.
I also remember where I was when JFK Jr.'s plane went down. I think it must've been a Saturday morning because I had time to watch it unfold on TV. At that point the plane was just "missing." That was a shocker. He seemed like one of those people who could never die.

2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)

At my friends house hanging out.

6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991) At our apt. It scared me so bad.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994) At work in a restaurant. Later on CNN.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
At work at a Casino I was managing.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995) At a very close friends at the time.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was staying at a friends house after my husband and I had gotten in a fight. I fell asleep on her couch and woke up to it right when they started covering it. I thought I was dreaming.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
I don't remember.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Don't remember
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
Waiting for my son to get ready for school and I didn't want to send him. All my life I have had dreams of war planes, people parachuting from the sky, hiding in tents....too much tv?
I continued watching for the next 2 weeks and fell into a deep depression.

Not yet born.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
I was 1 day shy of one month old...I was told that ash covered the town we were living in, in Montana.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
Too young to remember
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I was in first grade and we all had to go to an assembly in the gym so we could watch the news broadcast
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
I don't remember where I was, I do however remember my mother freaking out thinking it was the beginning of the tribulation....story of my childhood.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
No idea, I don't think I realized we were at war until it was over...sad but true.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
At my friend Nicoles house laughing at the silliness of a low speed chase.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
Having my 13 birthday and listening to my mother talk about the dangers of cults.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Turning 15 and refusing to celebrate because at that point my birthday kind of felt jinxed (plenty of other events contributed to this feeling).
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Holding my daughter on the couch and mouring her loss.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
Sitting with a group of military wives (can't remember who's house we were at), holding my breath and crossing my fingers that the idiot from Texas wouldn't be the next president...dammit anyways!
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
I don't remember at all
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
My husband called from work and told me to turn on the t.v. I don't remember what I said and the next few hours were kind of a blur. Myself and almost every military wife on our block ended up in my garage watching every second of news coverage. By the end of the week we were painting sheets with messages of encouragement and hanging them on every overpass from Camp Pendleton to the south side of San Diego.

Mom and I were at home. I was three. I kept asking her why she was crying. She was very upset, but trying to keep it together for my sake. It was so horrible, and hard to explain to a 3-year-old. She told me years later that she had voted for Kennedy while my dad had been a Nixon Republican.
2. Mt. St. Helens blew
I had a new boyfriend and it was his 20th birthday. Later, I married him!
10. I have always been a little Diana-crazed. My friends and I got up at 5 a.m. to watch her wedding footage. My daughters and I watched coverage of Diana's funeral and wept when her boys passed by in the procession. Later in Harrods in London, we saw the engagement ring that Dodi supposedly gave Diana that day.
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not yet born.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
On my grandma's back porch in Portland, Oregon...watching.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
I think I was in violin class, at least I was when I found out about it.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I was in an earth science class at West Linn H.S. watching it on a really OLD tv.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Lubbock, Texas. I only know this, because of the date. I don't really remember this.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
Northampton, England. My H.S. sweetheart was in Germany in the Army and I was sure something was going to happen to him. I really lost it. I would sit for hours watching footage on BBC and crying. He did go, but he was fine.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
No idea, I never watched it. I saw bits later of taped stuff, but I didn't watch the actual chase. Hang on, June of 1994...Counting forward from graduation, I had to have been in Dallas, Texas in June of 1994. I never watched or followed the OJ trial though.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
Dallas, Texas, I do remember that!
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Still in Dallas, but getting ready to move back to Oregon.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Portland, again, but I don't know what I was doing at the time or anything.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
Northampton, England. I didn't take much notice as they wouldn't let me file an absentee ballot.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Northampton, England, I totally missed it. Meaning, every earthquake remotely near Portland I always miss somehow. It's weird. Not that I was bummed to have missed on the destruction and death or whatever. (Wonders if people actually died, doesn't even know.)
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I was in England, still. My (then) husband called me crying and told me to turn on the tele. He was at work, I was at home. I remember sitting and watching it and thinking, "This cannot be real!"
Not yet born.

In 1st grade. Everyone was crying. I was sent home, where the women were congregating on block weeping and blowing their noses. (Men were at work.)
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Getting ready to move back to NYC after living for 2 years after graduating in Ann Arbor. I didn't attend to news much. Little did I know I would be moving to WA in 21 years!
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
In NYC, can't remember. Didn't have a TV, didn't watch the news, and ummmmm, since I hated Reagan was not interested since he was fine.
I was three. No memory.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986) At therapy, wow.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Struck SF off the list of potential places to move to!
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
At work. Getting ready to move to Seattle. Got paranoid about being Jewish.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Heheh. Don't remember much except watching the video.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
Don't remember
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
In Italy! So I kind of missed out on being bamboozled by the media. Which was fascinating.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Hmmm. Don't quite remember, but probably heard it on NPR as I wearily contemplated what to do with 18mo baby that day.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
Glued to the computer and TV.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Where's Nisqually, WA? :D
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
Oh a day marked in my psyche forever. Getting ready to walk Jake to the school bus for the 2nd day of K. And I saw my boy and felt an age of innocence for all kids lost.

I don't know about next -- but eventually, yes for sure.
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not yet born.
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
I was too young to recall this, but I was a baby, living in Colorado.
3. Reagan's shooting (3/1981)
I was three. No memory.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I was in second grade, Mrs. Stroh's class. I remember we were studying space so all the second graders were in the gym watching tv. Then it exploded and the rest of the school came in to watch too.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
I don't really remember where I was when it happened, but I remember watching tv after and thinking about how we drove on that very highway that collapsed when we were out visiting my aunt and uncle.
6. When the Gulf War began (1/15/1991)
We were at my friend Haley's condo in Frisco, sitting in the hot tub. The news was on inside, and I remember watching fireworks being set off in the sky after they told us the war had begun.
7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
My high school boyfriend Adam and I were watching during our lunch from school - ramen noodles and oreos - and the tv was on in his parents kitchen nook.
8. When the Branch Davidian compound burned in Waco (4/19/1993)
My parents were on vacation near there for some reason, for their wedding anniversary, so I was all thrilled about that, but all I know is I was at my Grandma's, watching tv.
9. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Again, I was at Adam's, I think.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was working at summer camp, away from tv. I think we heard about it by the end of the day, but I never saw any tv coverage. This summer there was also a huge flood in my hometown that killed some people and ruined some buildings (including the library) at CSU.
11. When Bush was first announced President (Nov 2000)
I was working at Poor Richard's in Portland, and every time I walked past the tv to go to the bar to pick up drinks the numbers were different. I was completely flabbergasted when Bush won.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
This was when I was still living in Portland, but I was home visiting friends and missed the hubub. My Portland boyfriend at the time, Billy, later told me that he felt it when he was "dropping the kids off at the pool." Lovely.
13. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I was getting a ride home from my boyfriend Paul, early that morning so I could go work the breakfast shift at Rivers. He turned on the car radio and flipped through the stations "talk, talk, talk" and then snapped it off 'cause there was no music. I didn't find out about the bombings until an hour later, when I was getting out of the shower and my phone rang. My mom was calling to see if I'd heard the news. I didn't have tv, so I didn't see the coverage until I got to the restaurant. It was a weird day.
