I think it was Through the tunnel by Doris Lessing
Oh, I love this story so much, they even mentione dit in my Life Science text book!
I haven't thought of that book for years! We read it in middle school also. Wasn't it a short story?
I read this in 7th grade about a boy who moves or visits somewhere I think and he sees a bunch of native american boys (I think they say "Indians tho") swimming in a swimming hole.
He later sort of gains acceptance by swimming with them but they all disappear under a rock and appear at the other end. He realizes there's some sort of tunnel under there.
It's about 2-3 minutes long to get to the other side so he practices holding his breath all summer.
Finally he goes through the tunnel and he almost dies /his nose is bleeding,but he finally got through this "rite of passage".
Any clues?
