Mandy Moody | 544 comments This question is posted in the "overall" thread - but it pertains directly to this part, I think

What is it that Katherine sees in Owen that makes her fall so deeply in love that she's willing to risk her life to be with him? What is it about her that inspires him to do that same?

I thought this was an interesting question. IMO, Owen falls in love with Katherine mainly because she is the queen, and because she is beautiful.
I don't necessarily think anything is WRONG with either of those reasons, but I do think they are a bit superficial.
As far as Katherine loving Owen, I think that her main motivation is that HE loves HER. Poor Katherine has never been loved as she should have been by the people that should have loved her. Owen, however, adores her. That's a pretty convincing reason to love someone.

Am I too cynical?

Donna | 19 comments Hi Mandy, No, I don't think you are too cynical. As Katherine said earlier in the book she often thought it would have been better to not be a royal. Owen could give her the quiet life she longed for with a husband who adored her and her children around her and in her care.

Laura | 99 comments This was the one thing about the book that I was trying to figure out. I don't think Plaidy really described what attracted them to each other - they just fell in love. I like what Mandy wrote - Katherine loved Owen because he loved her and could give her what she wanted, a quiet life with her family.

Sara W (sarawesq) | 2153 comments I suppose I would rather love someone who loved me than love someone who didn't (ah, reminds me of all those high school crushes that were one-sided!). I agree with what Mandy wrote but don't really have a problem with it (well, Katherine's reasons; Owen's reasons for falling in love are a tad sadder). I think he came to truly love her for herself though (from what I remember - I'm trying to finish up the 19th Wife so I can re-read this one).

Mandy Moody | 544 comments I think Owen definitely ends up loving Katherine for herself. If anything, he seems a bit MORE invested in the relationship. After all - he's the one risking his life to be with her! If (when) they are found out, all that's going to happen to K is that she'll be made a nun. He could be charged with treason and killed!
