one more thing which keeps nagging me is Eve's life after she landed in foster care. I don't think it is mentioned in any of the books. where she lived before New York. another thing is her bafflement about country life. if sje was in texas even for sometime she would have seen or heard of ranches

I believe it was Midnight in Death.

Part of her life in foster care is addressed in Memory in Death. She was in Dallas but didn’t live on or near a ranch. It’s a big, sprawling city.

Hmmm - I have been a bit ocd and working out the dates for each of the In Death books and have come up against a problem - Eternity in Death implies that the death of the first girl was April 18 2060. (view spoiler)[Her only regret was that the awakening had to be done in private rather than at the club. But her lover had assured her all that nasty business about being buried, then having to climb out of some disgusting coffin was just the invention of tacky books and bad vids. The reality was so much more civilized.
One hour after the ritual—which was so frigging sexy—she'd wake up in her own bed, eternally young, eternally strong, eternally beautiful.

So by rights, we should have Creation listed first - before Eternity.
Or is there a reason it's not listed that way.

Great question! It looks like J. D. Robb has changed the reading order on her website and here on Goodreads. The reason we have it listed in reverse order here is because Eternity was published before Creation (October 30 and November 7, respectively) and it first appeared on the website this was. Apparently, the author has corrected the timeline error.

Hi All, I’m new to the group! Love everything Eve & Roarke and have read them all a few times - especially my favorites.. Your thread has helped me so much in remembering which ones were my favs! Question though - there was a book when I believe Eve & Roarke went to Dallas and she has a nightmare (not Dallas to NY), which really upsets him and the next day she finds him in the gym punching a punching bag. Does anyone remember which book that was?

In Suite 606 (Ritual In Death), Eve has a dream about a a family of three appearing in her office. The young boy makes a comment about the flying cars out the window. Does anyone know what that was about?

If you read on you will find a story of a A wizard, a young boy and a mother traveling through time and it will connector that story

As Cookie said, the family of 3 appears in one of the other stories (by other authors) in Suite 606. I believe the woman says something like "oops" when they pop into Eve's dream - like wrong place, wrong time or something. I need to reread the scene.

Barrow was one of the villians from Rapture and remember he gave Eve and Roarke a suggestion through the music he produced to have sex and they ended up on their lawn. He also did it to Roarke which made him feel so guilty even though it wasn't his fault. That is the reference because Baswick was his attorney but that was the part I didn't know or remember til this book.

Anybody know when Jamie is due to finish college and join the police force? I'm not from the States and our education systems are different so I don't know the timeframes for college education. It will be interesting to see how involved he will be with Eve and homicide once he graduates from the Police Accademy.

I believe he is in his first year of college. Depending on the degree he is working on he has 4 to 6 years. Knowing Roarke he probably wants him in school as long as possible while he tries to convince Jamie to work for him instead of NYPSD. Jamie probably plans to stop with a BS which is normally a 4 yr degree.

If he want to go in police work he'll have to go for his Master or double major in psychology as well as computer science. In the end it will probably take him six years

Barbara, Where do you live? I'm in a Florida PD and very few have Master degrees. Maybe big cities are different.

I can see that. We have a lot of PD who go on for more education after getting on the police force but most start with a military background. Your perspective is closer to the NYPSD of In Death. Thanks.

With that timeframe I doubt if we will see him as a police officer then. The series has so many books per year (in book time) that I can't see that he would be finished before the series ends.

I hope we have about 15 - 20 more years of JD Robbs' stories before the series end so will probably see him as a cop or working with Roarke

I think Nora Roberts is around my age, 64 - 65. Hopefully she has written the last book in the In Death series or, like Barbara Cartland, she lives to be close to 100 and keeps writing to the end. Barbara Cartland left books for publishing after her death. Nora Roberts is a prolific writer too. I suspect she has manuscripts around waiting for publishing.

I'm bummed out that Sue Grafton didn't have her last two books ready for publication. The last interview I saw with her said she was having a hard time figuring out how to write the last book.

Good question! I'm not sure. The one that comes to mind to me is Apprentice in Death with the long-range sniper killing victims. But I don't remember if Eve grabs anyone who is shot in the street or not.

No not apprentice .... might be the same one where her car blew up. It was some type of sting she was doing and people were shot and she grabbed someone after they were shot in the street might have been idk who it was. Might have been 2 different books

Vengeance in Death is one where her car blows up.

Divided in Death is the one where a missile is sent at her. The other person in the car is the target and injured.

Ok - I've just finished Naked in Death again and highlighted the descriptions of the characters as they were written. Now when Roarke was first described, he is described as having an narrow, aesthetic face. What do you take that to mean and how do compare that description to real life?
I think it only fair to say that I have difficulties doing visuals when reading - I feel more than see, I suppose I'm not a visual person (don't like movies or TV all that much)

It isn't so much as which person you think should be Roarke as trying to understand what that description meant. I suppose you could rewrite the description as a narrow, attractive face taking the meaning of aesthetic into account - but I have a tendency when seeing that word as a descriptive for facial features to mean that remote scholarly - (almost like the rennaisance pictures of Jesus) look some men have.

Linda, I know what you mean. Sometimes the descriptions make me wonder. The one that really leaves me wondering is a poet's mouth/lips. What the heck are poet's mouths/lips supposed to look like? Maybe sensual? In these types of situations I generally just do as best as I can to visualize what I think it would look like.

I think we all have our own opinions of what Roarke looks like and we can dream and sigh when J.D. describes him in the book through Eve’s eyes.

In rereading the books I get a great laugh out of how Eve reacts to holidays, parties, and many of the social things she’s not used to. Such as dressing up for a fancy do.

My favorite is her reacting to vending machines. We’ve all been there with that.

For me, it means Roarke has a narrow, oval face that is beautiful while manly. We learn more about Roarke's appearance as the books evolve. I always remember that Robb/Roberts planned on this story as a trilogy. The first two books in particular are sketchy sometimes.

I'm re-listening to the books and noticed (in the first book, maybe) that she describes Roarke's mouth as looking like he should be speaking poetry, or something like that. In later books he's described as having a poet's mouth.

Don't forget the time frame of the books. 4 years of college in the books was probably equal to 20 years in our time frame.

I love her holiday books and many of the release days are around Thanksgiving / Christmas maybe that is part of the reason. Also, the cold and snow add another chill to the crimes.

If anyone has noticed all 47 books have taken place in a one and a half year to two-year time span. It’s still 2061 in Eve’s world.

I don’t think that Jamie’s out of high school yet.

It’s actually three years. Naked in Death opens in February 2058. The most recent book takes place in February 2061.

Had brain slip--I haven’t paid attention to which year it was. All I know is that no more than 2 or 3 years have passed.

I thought Jamie is in college. If I remember correctly, the book where the captain's daughter is killed, Eve goes to his University. The Dean or President is so helpful because Roarke set up a scholarship.
