I know some of you have your own poetry books out there, or coming out. Please feel free to add them to the group booklist.

Also, the books on your own to-read list for this group can be added if you feel like it. I'll link up some from the lists you post.

cheers

Pamela How does one go about making her list? Where do you create it and then post it?
Thanks...I've not interacted via goodreads much.

Hi Pamela,
You can post your list below in the section on members' lists. Make the list whenever you like, and add to it or edit it when you decide to.
Right now I have six books on my list, but I'll be adding to that, and maybe removing books I never get my hands on, etc.
Up to you - no need to feel the list is set in stone.
cheers

Daniel Staniforth (flowforth) Weaver in the Sluices Selected Poems by Daniel Staniforth

Hello - I am looking for reviewers for my recent poetry book, Weaver in the Sluices.

Thanks for your consideration. Here is what a couple of well known poets have said about it so far:

"Daniel Staniforth’s book of poems Weaver in the Sluices is an intermixing of zones where the light of the waking body rises and transmixes its power with falling uranian whispers. These poems exist at the cusp where both realities overspill and condense, making fleeting forays into the unsayable." — Will Alexander, author of The Sri Lankan Loxodrome and Above the Human Nerve Domain

"In Weaver in the Sluices, Daniel Staniforth pulls variously from Bardic tradition, contemporary lament, and surrealist landscapes to “filter the nutrients of thought.” The poet invokes erotic passion and political protest alike, all while navigating the “midriff of the sun,” “star-widths of fancy,” and the “nape of the sea.” In these poems, such wonders shift continually between foreground and background to portray a world where, ultimately, “the hollows subsume the shape.” — Elizabeth Robinson, author of Inaudible Trumpeters and The Orphan & its Relations

Lavinia Thompson (lavinia_thompson) | 2 comments "She Wasn't Allowed to Giggle" is a poetry and prose collection that explores the dark depths of domestic violence and child abuse and about finding the light at the end of the tunnel. It is based on my own experiences growing up, told through the perspective of the little girl he destroyed grown up to be a woman with a voice. This is my story.

"She Wasn't Allowed to Giggle" has been shared with the Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) Organization. They help girl survivors of commercial and sexual exploitation and trafficking. They received a complimentary copy to share with their members. I am honoured that they were interested and that the book will serve the purpose for which I published it.

She Wasn't Allowed to Giggle is available on Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/924...

And on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005QTX282

Hi Caroline -
When I posted my chapbook I also didn't have an ISBN so GoodReads told me to make one up. Which I did, and it worked.
To get someone to do a review for you - yes, you can ask here, as well as in the POETRY! group, and another good idea, though it doesn't always lead to a review, is to host a giveaway as Charmi (right above you in this string) has done. I did that as well. A giveaway gets a lot of attention but of course some of the potential readers are just people looking to get something for free, and may not really care about poetry or social/environmental issues.
If someone here has other advice or would like to review Caroline's book, please chime in.
Good luck!
sarah

Diane Kistner (dkistner1111) | 50 comments FutureCycle Press gives away poetry books on Goodreads and also has free Kindle days most months. The best way to find them all in one place is to go to our home page, www.futurecycle.org, and check the giveaways and free Kindle days links on the upper right side of the page.

Mark your calendars: On December 29th, as a gift to all our readers and a kick-off to a happy new year, we are giving away free Kindle editions of all 33 of our titles! Go "buy" them for 0.00 and you'll own them for good! And please do review a few of them. A lot of heart and soul went into these books, and we want the whole world to know about them.

Enjoy!

Hi, Jen. The page count varies from one format to another. It's well under 100 pages though, approx. 70 pages.

Also, I've recently uploaded it onto Goodreads temporarily to make it easier for anyone interested in reading. Just head on over to the book's page to download.

Susana Case (susanahcase) | 169 comments Hi all, being new to Goodreads, could someone please explain what a giveaway is and what it does? Thanks.

message 28: by Diane (new)

Diane Kistner (dkistner1111) | 50 comments Susana, a Goodreads giveaway is a feature where publishers and authors can give away paperback copies of their books, hoping of course for a review in return. You can find giveaways on the Explore tab. FutureCycle Press just wound up a ton of giveaways, and now we're back to giving away one book per month in tandem with our Kindle edition giveaway of the same title.

The good thing about the giveaways is that Goodreads randomly picks the winners. Anyone can enter to win as long as the giveaway is active for their country. (It's more costly for U.S. publishers to ship overseas, so some might limit their giveaways to the U.S. and Canada, and vice versa with British and Australian publishers, say.)

The giveaways are a fun way to hunt for new books to read, too. You can sort the active giveaways by genre, search by keywords, etc. Just entering the word "futurecycle" in the keywords pulls up our press's giveaways because we make sure that word is in all of our metadata whenever we put anything out there.

I never win anything, and I actually won a copy of Gerald Stern's Stealing History through a giveaway!

You found the right place, Susana! And your book sounds very interesting. As for givaways, at the top of a goodreads page you'll see a menu of five items, the last being Explore. Giveaways is the second item under the Explore dropdown menu. Here is a link to it: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway. Authors and publishers list books they're willing to give away to readers in hopes of receiving a review (no guarantees on getting a review, let alone a good one).

Susan Gardner To Inhabit the Felt World

This is my fifth book, to be published May 1, 2013.
Some early critiques:

Susan takes us by the throat... into seemingly veiled poems that leave haunting images for us to reinterpret, to meditate upon. These are poems for the poet-breath within us. One reading, one long breath is not enough.... I have heard the roar of a poet responding to the love and pain in a private, felt world.
As a fellow poet, I am revived by this gathering of penetrating tenderness.
- James McGrath, poet, author of AT THE EDGELESSNESS OF LIGHT, DREAMING INVISIBLE VOICES and SPEAKING WITH MAGPIES

  
Susan Gardner’s spare but urgent collection of poems, To Inhabit the Felt World, is “the roar of alive”….

I don’t believe I have ever read lines of such ferocity, honesty and pain….
TO INHABIT THE FELT WORLD is a remarkable collection by a remarkable poet/painter/photographer. – Elizabeth Raby, poet, author of INK ON SNOW

Robert Nicholas (lenxbob) | 3 comments "Shaker Lane"

“In the introduction, the stage is set and you will be hooked. The boy, the pebble, and the lane interact. You will not come away from this book unmoved. ,,, a touching volume”

The poems in this collection are woven into a unified story, an odyssey, which develops as you progress. The book was crafted to have a magical, inspirational feel to it – a range from joy to sorrow. It is an adult myth - a novel told in verse. It would appeal to adults who dream of a simpler time. Young adults and teens would also enjoy it.

My boyhood home on Shaker Lane in western Massachusetts was a converted saw mill associated with the Shaker religious community. This one-lane unpaved road was surfaced in stone over a dirt base. There were only five homes along its stretch deep into the Berkshire Hills. As a result, what little traffic existed was slow, and we could walk it without fear - at least as long as our mothers didn’t catch us.

Other than school and summer vacations, all of my childhood took place within one hundred yards skirting the sides of the lane. For my playmates and me, it was the focal point of our youth. Our Shaker Lane playground covered hundreds of acres of lawns, fields and woods.

I treat the lane as a living entity, with senses, feelings, memories and a ‘voice’– a friend - which it was for me as a boy. While many of these poems are wholly or partially anecdotal, others are more allegorical. Family and friends might argue, “That isn’t how I remember it.” I plead generous poetic license. Consider it to be a metaphor of some imaginary child’s life, not necessarily my own.

Does the lane actually converse with me? Am I only hearing other people speak, and believe it to be the lane? Is it merely my own thoughts? Or is it a child’s overactive imagination? What power does the pebble I find there hold over me? What does the old woman in the green-shingled house know? What mystery awaits me when I finally reach the end of Shaker Lane?

So come back in time to post World War II – the time of Howdy Doody – of stick horses – of the transition from radio to television - of Superman – of hula hoops – a time when parents had to repeatedly shout at the top of their lungs to get their children to stop playing and come back in the house for meals or bedtime.

Surrender yourself to the lure. Explore all the joy and magic that a young boy can discover along the way. Come with me and listen closely as we walk Shaker Lane, the friend beneath my feet.

Robert Nicholas (lenxbob) | 3 comments "Mr. McSnipper and Other Verses"
Age Level: 9 to 99 – Reading Level: 4th grade and up

In a land far away known as Spoonsipper
Was a small village by river Stoneskipper
There in twelve minutes or possibly quicker
Stood tumbledown shack of Mr. McSnipper

This is an illustrated collection of silly poems, limericks and sonnets for children and families to enjoy - plus a few not so silly verses. Children under the age of nine will enjoy listening to most of these poems as well. I show you how to read a poem – which syllables to stress to make the rhythm and rhyme flow.

"The Troll on My Couch"
"Silly Sally"
"Penny the Pudgy Pink Pig"
"Little Pete"
"My Truck and I"

All these and more are waiting for you to visit. So come on in and meet some new friends! And when you are finished reading, I will show you how to write your own rhyming poems.

This book is available as a paperback from the following:
CreateSpace - https://www.createspace.com/4163395

Susana Case (susanahcase) | 169 comments Elvis Presley's Hips & Mick Jagger's Lips
Hi, my new book of poems is now officially out. Elvis Presley's Hips & Mick Jagger's Lips is rock and roll in poetry. The poems cover a range of subjects related to music, organized into three sections: “The Honey Thing,” (relationships); “Mood Alteration,” (substance abuse and shifts in emotion); and “Write a Song About It,” (the music business and its relationship to other aspects of life). Each poem also departs in unique ways from rock and roll, its lyrics and history. I hope some of you will take a look.
