Young Adult Fiction for Adults discussion

Hey all! New to the site and this group as of yesterday. Have always adored any type of book but fantasy particulary... starting with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when I was young (whistles... back in the 80ties). Was obsessed with LJ Smith's The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle in the early 90ties. Since Twilight.. have started to buy YA books again and can't seem to get enough of them! Is it just me or are they much more 'adult like' then when I was a teenager? Just finished The Iron King on Sunday night and it blew me away. Can't wait for Iron Daughter in August. Reading The Hourglass Door right now and kinda meh.. have a ton of books to start read (Shiver, The Hunger Games, Lament, etc.). It's amazing to see the genre just explode! So much to read.. thank goodness I was given a Kindle for Christmas. Anyhow, this site is pretty amazing and looking forward to talking to ya all :) Ali

Right there with you Ali! I cut my teeth on LJ when I was a teen, and loved it so much (and was so disgusted that there wasn't more at the time), I started writing my own. I really think YA has come into its own this decade. They're less afraid of the edgy and adult now than they were when we were teens. You must check out Cassandra ClareHer Mortal Instruments trilogy is AWESOME.

I also have to highly recommend Bite Me! by Melissa Francis (who is also a friend of mine). She's one funny chick.

Oh and Simon Holt. The Devouring was freaking CREEPY and awesome.

Oh Kait, I just remembered. For other fairy stories, check out R.J. Anderson's books - Knife and Rebel in UK and Spell Hunter in the States. I haven't read these but they are in my TBR pile.

The Devouring wasn't quite what I expected. It has a bit younger feel to it than some of the others, but it's still terrifying. If you, like 75% of It readers, are afraid of clowns, you might want to skip over...

Ok...just started the hunger games.... pretty good so far! Then will hit lament... the hourglass door will be shelved for a bit (if thats not telling!). Oh and I adored the cassandra Clare books too! Heard she has a new series out soon... so can't wait!

Tim Curry is just plain creepy. And I have a hard time liking actors who have bad reps off-screen.

Hi everyone! I'm new and trying to find my way around. My friend Kait invited me here as it seems most of what I'm reading right now is YA: Sloppy Firsts, Max Ride 2, Wicked Lovely, City of Bones, assorted manga... She recently told me I was very in touch with my inner teen. I think this is because I can't seem to find my inner mature adult most of the time.

But we do use the online catalog a lot. Which I LOVE. Still, I've kinda sorta got that MINE thing and plus I'm compelled to buy something every time Fictionwise sends me an email saying: hey, come buy something. Well, ok, since you asked...

No interlibrary loan??? I live for ILL, that is how I get half of my books!

From what I understand we can do it within the system, but looking at the system-wide catalog--it's mostly not good. To get stuff from other libraries there are fees involved.

I know, thats what I was thinking! And I just got my 5th library card in the mail the other day. I did a happy dance.

hey susan! I hear ya on the buying.. rec'd a Kindle for xmas last year and been buying things like crazy. Think I need an intervention! haha

Oh and everyone ... devoured The Hunger Games last night.. was incredible. I think every emotion possible hit me! Half way through Catching Fire now... purchased... of course... by the Kindle

Ebooks are crack! OMG. My book buying exploded when I got a reader. Will totally accompany you to the 12-step program, Ali. I'm on the waiting list for Hunger Games and I REALLY want to read it.

Sorry to hear about your crap library system ladies. I am very thankful for mine, I truly appreciate it. Hunger Games and Catching Fire are the best books I have read since Harry Potter and The Help. Loved them.

The Help is an excellent book. It's not YA though. It's really good, has a 4.49 rating here on GR - 45,000 votes! I gave it five stars and I'm stingy with the 5 star ratings. I'm sure you've hear of it, or at least recognize the cover.

Welcome Susan! I loved Sloppy Firsts but would have to agree that Second Helpings is even better! That's my favorite in the series.

Thank you both. I really need to finish this one so I can get to the second! I've been more or less away from YA for a while. I guess that the ones I was picking up just weren't my thing on first glance and I put them back down. Reading Sloppy Firsts...I have to say I was kind of surprised by the language and content. (This makes me think: Not your mama's YA, which makes me think: I'm the mama! which makes me feel kinda old.)

Susan - The Jessica Darling series is not really YA, I agree. In fact, my library has books 3 & 4 in the adult section where I think they belong due to the sexual content.

Ali The Help is a must read. It is not YA though. I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook version.

Peep, Tim Curry was also in a TV series from the 90's called Earth 2. He was on for a few episodes..

I have never heard of that series. Only show I really remember had to deal with Zack Morris and AC Slater.

LOL, Heidi, don't be hating Peep now! She can't help it, it is Peep Pressure and it has gone to her brain. I use to watch Saved by the Bell, the College Years cause man, Mark was hot..

I'll give points to anyone that remembers the show "You Can't Do That on Television". Now that was a show to remember, green slime and all!
