Tia (proceedcyclone) | 41 comments What do you do with the book that you're in middle of when the ball drops on 2009? Do you count it as a 2009 book or a 2010 book? Is there a general rule that you follow when deciding this (e.g. over half way, etc.) or do you simply not pick another up until after the first when it becomes too close to the end of the year to finish?

Karen (karebari) I've always counted it for the year that has more days that I was reading the book. So if I started the book on December 15th and finished on January 2nd, then I'd count it for the previous year. That's just my little rule, but there are only 2 years since I've been keeping track (since 2001) that that would change the total number of books for that year.

Jane I kind of do what karebari does, fudge a little. I just started a book (Murakami, and enjoying it!), which means I'll finish it in '10, so it'll get counted for '10. Whatever your comfortable with, but there's no shame in blurring the line a little.

Susanna (jb_slasher) If I finish in 2010, I count it as a 2010 book. Same with months. If I start a book in January and finish in February, I count it as a February book.

Tim Weakley | 396 comments I left off reading after finishing an ebook yesterday. So today is a day off from reading. Tomorrow though...woohoo!

I've always counted it in the year when I finished it. I may change that this year. I've been reading a short story collection that is about 950 pages long. I have 4 stories left, and I hope that I will finished them today. If anything comes up to prevent that, I fully intend to count the book on 2009's list - I've put too much time into it to do otherwise! (full disclosure - I had already read many of the stories before)

Molly | 330 comments I personally use the year I finished it in too. Unless it was just the last chapter or something that was completed in the new year - then I would count that for the prior year.

Tia (proceedcyclone) | 41 comments I was going to determine which year it belonged to based on how much of the book I read on either side. I generally use that strategy for when I determine a book was read on my bookshelves, but for the challenge, it almost felt a little like cheating. I feel better about it now, though. Thanks for your responses everyone. :)

Lexi | 345 comments I finished a book this morning so I'm just waiting until tomorrow to pick up my next book. If i had started another book i would have counted it for 2010 (It is so weird writing '2010'!)

Suzanne | 19 comments I was determined to finish the book that I started reading Dec. 28 in the year 2009. And I did--with 45 min. to spare!!
I was wondering about this question also.

Suzanne | 19 comments Thanks, Tim. I was losing horribly at a Dominoes game that we were playing So I asked one of my sons to take over for me. I then finished by book. A perfect excuse, IMO;) Hubby didn't think so, but whatver. LOL
