I'm looking forward to reading that after hearing all about it yesterday!

Damn! I quit smoking before I got married (20 yrs ago). Wasn't thinking about how to evade the mother-in-law! lol

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

I have to say that I was surprised about the smoking ban in German restaurants. When I lived there in the early 90's there were a few places I refused to go to. There was a place with a great Sunday brunch, but it was too smokey. Not all places were like that, fortunately.

I am an ex-smoker, so I can't stand smoke anymore, but I do feel sorry for smokers. It is -8 F here today, and I would have died if I needed my smoke and had to go outside!! It's a dilemma.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I notice something interesting. As of now we have 62 members and nearly all or all (?) of them are women.

Do men not read comfort books, I wonder?

message 56: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Or, they might not want to admit that they do ...

I was noticing the same thing this morning Lisa. I think men do read comfort books. I'd like to have some male members to see what kinds of things they relax with. I'm a big fan of spy books and thrillers and I was hoping we would have more contributions along that line.

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

So, who is going to go looking for a few good (non-imaginary) men? :)

Are you volunteering to go man hunting Jeannette? :-)

message 60: by Laura (new)

Laura | 294 comments it seems there is a lack of man around...LOL!!

message 61: by Laura (new)

Laura | 294 comments I just invited 3 males to join us. At least, they are quite polite, lets see...

message 71: by Peregrine (new)

Peregrine | 91 comments 'kay, that's it - I'm ditching any and all group read commitments for the next few weeks, unless they look comfy, and having a tryst with my own personal booklust, in comfort! :-)

I'm kinda feeling the same way Peregrine. I figure I have about two weeks to gorge on comfort reads before my Feb 1st group reads kick in. :-)

Have a great weekend everyone!

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been doing so much challenge reading this month (in an obsessed way...I need intervention) that I have done no comfort reading. I must committ to confort on my next book.

Christine, those challenges just make me nutty. I don't ever want to feel so stressed out about reading.

I know, I am never good with sticking to challenges so I don't know why I join them. One of them is just to read what I already own before I buy new ones...that one is good for me. :)

This is going to sound weird, but I just spent 40 minutes trying to dislodge a giant frozen inflatable holiday penguin from my backyard (it scares my dog and it was just time already)and I am wiped out. I must reward myself with some reading time.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
OMG! Christine, thanks for my first big grin of the day! You definitely deserve to sit down with a comfy book and relax after wrestling with a giant penguin!

Well, I guess I can agree with that particular of challenge but I still hate to feel pinned down. It's so nice to just go where your mood takes you with your reading. I try and order 8 or 10 different things at once from the library so I will have a good selection.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

If you want to see the penguin in question, it's on my doggie's blog...the thing is ridiculous.

The reason that I joined that challenge is that I found myself buying things or borrowing things that I already had. Obviously I need therapy.

message 84: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I've done enough high stress reading to understand (like trying to finish a 900+ page German "novel" because you have an exam on it in a few days, sometimes college/university professors have no idea that assigning three or four huge books a term in one class is not going to make one appreciate literature, especially when three other professors have done the same .... ughhhh). I've actually reread many of the books I've had to read at university, and reading them the second time around, with no deadlines etc., has made me appreciate the literature much much more (even to the point of taking academic notes).

Where is your blog? -- I would love to see the penguin picture!

message 86: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think I'm allowed to post a link here, but it's on my profile. It's not the book blog, it's the dog blog (divadixie). If you scroll down a little you'll see the offending penguin.

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

I will look for your blog. I think it's ok to post a link to your dog's blog (unless your dog wrote a book!). People are always posting links to blogs on the other groups I'm in.

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Dead penguin! Sweet little dog! No wonder she's afraid of it! lol

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

The inflated penguin was lower...did you see that thing?

message 90: by [deleted user] (new)

I've seen those things in the neighborhood, so I can believe a small dog would be afraid of it! The inflatables were the first to go when we got all that snow. Here in Iowa, it froze on top, too, so I imagine you had a job hacking the thing out of the snow!

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

Starting the book Not Me A Novel by Michael Lavigne today, which does NOT seem to fit comfort. I swear, I am due for a comfort binge. However, today I am embracing my depression (my Baltimore Ravens lost) and I'll read something depressing. (cue the sad music here).
What is everyone up to today? Sunday should be a comfort day.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

If you are a Raven's fan, it is indeed a blue day. Nothing went right for them last night. Why are you a Raven's fan (in Illinois)? Poor Iowa has to borrow a team, since we don't have one.

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

We had a move to Maryland for almost three years (and then we came back here). I just caught Ravens fever during my short residency.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
What are the Ravens? Are they an American Football team?

We're having a relaxing Sunday. I've started reading the first Lord Peter Wimsey mystery by Dorothy L. Sayers. It's good.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

It is NFL (American football) playoffs season, to be followed by the Superbowl in February (same time the new Emma is on TV in the US).

The Ravens are the Baltimore Maryland team and they were severely beaten last night.

Are a lot of you guys football fans? Just curious.

message 97: by Peregrine (new)

Peregrine | 91 comments Just off on a small tangent, my now 19-year-old niece was born on a Superbowl Sunday. When my sister-in-law told my brother, "It's time to go to the hospital," it was during the actual game. Tom looked at her, aghast, and said, "Not *now?" They went right away, of course, and a good thing they did. Db dropped sil off at the front doors of the hospital and went to park the truck. She was whisked away immediately; when he came looking for her after parking, he was told that his wife and daughter were doing fine.

That's cute Peregrine. Imagine football being (almost) more important the the birth of his daughter! I hope they didn't name her after a football player. :-)

message 100: by [deleted user] (new)

That is funny! Hope they didn't name her after a quarterback or anything! :)
