Sarah Elizabeth Anyone successful?? I need a job for the summer. I have already been thinking about it, I've even applied to a few places, but still my mom won't stop talking about it. It's driving me nuts. I need to know that I'm not alone!!! LOL :)

Not sure where you live, but around here there are a lot of national parks and other tourist type places. They hire huge numbers for the summer months. Might be somewhere to try. Good luck!

You are definitely not alone. I've been searching for a job ever since I graduated last December. I took a crappy job that I hated and then I quit because I'm not about to go through life being THAT miserable. I'm fine with not liking my job but the extent of how miserable I was concerned me. So..I feel ya.

I've been finding more internships than I have been finding suitable jobs. You could try looking into some of those. Some of them are paid depending on the field. Also, use your resources and contacts! Email those professors and family friends. Chances are that they have contacts. Unfortunately, it seems that everybody that my contacts know do things that I have no interest in. lol

Good luck!!

Molly (slinkyxo) | 153 comments Not alone. My mom keeps bugging me about getting my "foot in the door" somewhere while I'm in college. UGH. I know. It's just annoying that she is bugging me.

What are some of the places you guys search for jobs? Industry specific boards? Monster? Newspaper?

I know I have posted this somewhere else, but not sure where, so I will repeat. My work often hires from a business/accounting group at 2 certain schools, either for the internships or for full time work. So, if there is some type of club at your school related to what you want to do when you grow up, join it. There are ties to people that hire in that field.

message 7: by Mia (new)

Mia (miapalooza) Molly, I know your mom is "bugging you" about getting your foot in the door, but I have to admit, she's absolutely right. I graduated in May 2009 and, while I had my foot in the door with a few internships and such, it's taking me so long to find a job that when I recently asked for references from my past contacts, I heard nothing back. If I could change one thing about how I went about my job search, it would be to make good contacts early (in college) and regularly keep in touch with them. It can be tedious, but it is OH SO important when it comes to looking for jobs or even just connections later on. I hope my advice will help you have a much smoother search than some of us out here! Good luck (even though you probably don't need it)!

AGREED Mia! I wish I would have done the same!

message 9: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I am currently looking for a job.If i get a job it will be my very first believe it or not..lol. One of my goals for this year is to get independent. I want to make my own money so I can pay my own bills and my mom doesnt have to do it anymore. I've applied for Border's and Lucky's. Waiting for them to call. In the meantime, I am keeping my eyes open for other job openings.

message 10: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I with you there Ashley...never had a job. I really don't know how I've made it this long without one...
I did just apply for a summer work program at my school. If I get it, it will pay me $8,000 for the summer :)

message 11: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Wow Kelly, thats a lot of money. :)

The main thing is try to relax! I know it is hard, but the more you stress about it, the worse it is going to be. I like the honesty part best, but I don't know what type of interviewer he/she will be. Good Luck!

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I know how you feel! I feel the same way. But Tami's right. Don't worry too much about it. :) Just relax, I'm sure you'll be great! LOL Good luck!!

Take a little bit of time before the interview to think of possible interview questions that could be asked. Think about your strengths and your weaknesses. Also take a little bit of time to learn about the Y (background info) as well as think of a few questions pertaining to the job. I've heard from many hiring managers that they like when a prospective employee asks intelligent, relevant questions because it shows that they are truly interested. And like Tami said, try and relax! Nerves will show! Fake some confidence, girl! I'm not all about faking how you are feeling but in some instances you need to! :)

Good luck!!!

:( Sorry to hear that it didn't go as well as planned. Although, I thought I sucked at a few of the questions on my interview for a manager position and apparently I impressed them. So, it probably wasn't AS bad as you think it went. Did he say he would call you back?

Also, it sounds as though you might be great in a nursery school type setting. When I was in high school they had this really nice preschool that was infants up to like 4 year old kids and you didn't have to have a degree for it or anything. The people with the younger kids didn't have to plan as much activity to engage the kid as the ones with the 2-4 year old kids. Maybe something like that? I'm a whiz at searching for jobs (clearly not for myself though lol..I've found everyone else jobs) so I'd be happy to help.

Also, if you just want to get a babysitting job in the meantime, I would ask around your church or go to care.com & sittercity.com. My sister has been using those sites for the past 4 years and she gets calls all the time! And all of the people are really normal..not like creepy weirdos.

Here's some possible interview questions to go over:

For anyone in the Boston area, check out this job with a publishing company. I've worked with them before (ie them sending me books) and they are real nice and professional.

It's for an assistant to the director:

message 24: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I've been looking for a job since March. Hasn't been successful. But I will be calling the manager of Safeway to see if I can get an interview. Wish me luck.

message 25: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Good luck! I've been looking for a library job for a while, and I'm hoping one will pull through for me.

message 26: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I hate job hunting. I've been trying to find something temporary to last until I know if I got into AmeriCorps NCCC or not and have had no luck so far. Which, by the way, AmeriCorps has a lot of wonderful programs that you can consider applying for. I chose NCCC because of the intensity of it and the travel aspect. If I get in, I leave in February, but I have to find a job because I have to start paying off loans by December. If I don't get into NCCC, I'll likely start looking for jobs in my field until I find something.

If anybody has questions about AmeriCorps, just ask (PMs are fine so we don't flood the board, unless a lot of people ask questions, then I'd likely make a single topic where we could discuss it).

message 27: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Finally!!! After many applications, I got my very first job interview. I have an interview tomorrow at 3:30 for McDonalds. I am totally excited. Wish me lots of luck!!!

Rav (ravencat) Good luck Ashley!

message 30: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Yeahhh I need to start looking for a job when I go back to school. My family is having financial problems.

message 31: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Awww. Hope things get better for you and your family Richard.

message 32: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Thanks. It's mainly that my mom likes to live wealthier than she actually is.. We live in a house she can't afford, and she's unwilling to sell it and get a cheaper house. It's riddikulus.

message 33: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments That's tough Richard, I'm sorry.

My grandfather always said "I'd rather get a good nights sleep in a small house than no sleep in a big house".

message 34: by Rav (new)

Rav (ravencat) Hope things go better for you Richard! My family is the exact opposite, they have the money, but we live like we don't have a penny. Seriously we didn't have heat for 3 years for like no reason. -.-

message 35: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Thanks everyone.

Wow Jessica!! I would rather be in that situation than constantly worried my family is going to have a foreclosure and be thrown out of their house. Maybe my mom would get some sense....eventually....

message 36: by Rav (new)

Rav (ravencat) I suppose =\ It's just a situation that's hard to describe to people.

I know a lot of people these days are living beyond their means and I don't know why they do. She should let you handle the finances! (:

message 37: by Anika (new)

Anika (anlynn) | 106 comments I like your grandfather's quote, Kimberly! Very good words to live by! And Richard, I'm sorry for your situation.

I actually was fired from a job a few months ago (for a pretty dumb reason, and I was glad to be rid of the place). I recently was hired at the bookstore at my school (won't start til september), so I'll be working on campus. I would seriously suggest that if any of you are looking for a job while in college, start by looking at positions on campus. My sister worked in the same bookstore where I got hired and she loved it. Plus they work around your schedule!

message 38: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I am waiting to hear back from a job I interviewed for 2 weeks ago, and found out yesterday that the woman who interviewed me is on vacation. It was a little annoying to find that out by calling to see what was going on. They said they'd probably decide by the end of last week. Oh well.

message 39: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I applied to work at Staples, Bed Bath & Beyond, and a hotel in the last week or so. Then our cable company disconnected our phone service (and they won't reconnect it because they're idiots). It wouldn't be so bad if I had cell phone reception out here, but I don't have reception at all. So, if anybody has tried to call me, they have likely decided against hiring me because they think I lied about my phone number on my application.

message 40: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) My interview went well today. I am officially an employee of McDonalds part-time. My orientation is on Friday at 11:00. So excited. Now I have to go shopping and get some black shoes and black pants.

message 41: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Ohhh congratulations!!! I'll have to come by and order a snack wrap xD.

message 42: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Yay!! Congrats! Treat yourself to some chocolate.

message 43: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Thank you :)

message 44: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Congratulations Ashley!

I just rejected from another job. Boo. But I have another interview, pending on Wednesday at 1. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

message 45: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I got rejected from a job I wasn't aware I had submitted an application to, because I didn't think I had ever FINISHED the application, but whatever. I applied at Barnes & Noble yesterday, as dangerous a store as that is. I may not find out anything about AmeriCorps NCCC until November.

Guh. Waiting = death

message 46: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Ohhh I'm hoping to get a job at the Barnes and Nobles near my school! That'd be awesome. It's just winter break will be interesting, cause I'd have to take a month off of work or something.

message 47: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Good luck at the B&N jobs you guys... it pays crap, but it's fun.

message 48: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Hahaha. I just hope I don't work in the cafe area. Mainly cause of all the picky people and complainers :(. I've heard bad stories about people who were excessively evil to the cafe person.

message 49: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Yeah, people are unbelievably rude and abusive to cafe workers sometimes. I've seen some really horrible customers there.

message 50: by Richard (new)

Richard (nemzep95) | 448 comments Yeahh. I just order a drink and if I don't like it too much I still drink it. I'm not a picky person. Especially when it's my error. Once I ordered the wrong coffee drink hehe.
