message 1: by Ed (new)

Ed | 48 comments My new year's resolution is to read at least a book a week. HOw much do others read a week? How many hours each day? If I hit one hour a day on weekdays and a couple hours a day on weekends I think I can finish a book a week. What are others' reading habits? Are you able to avoid tv?

message 2: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 21 comments I used to read at least an hour a day, but now that I'm a stay at home mom, I read about 30 minutes a day at most. I'll bet you could read a book a week, depending on the size, though. Sometimes I read a few in a week that are easy but it takes me a month to read harder ones. Try averaging it if you want to try challenging books. If I'm reading a really good book I definitely skip watching tv.

message 3: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (chloeholt) | 4 comments Generally as much as I have time for. It depends on the amount of work/dance I have...and if I'm in the middle of a page-turner then there's no stopping me! On average I probably read at least 30 minutes a day, unless I'm between books.

message 4: by Emily (new)

Emily | 7 comments I read about 3 hours a day. Mostly because I live in NYC and have a long commute to work. This means that I go through 2-3 books a week on average depending on the book.

message 5: by David (new)

David Peters about 2 books a week on average or about 1 hour a day

my resolution is to hit 100 books a year and this will be the eighth year.

message 6: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 199 comments Around 2 - 3 hours per day and 2 - 3 books a week depending on their length.

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (weizhepeasy) I get to read only about an hour every day, which is pretty sad. Last year in '09, I didn't even make it to 30 books, and my goal was to read 50!

message 8: by Niko (new)

Niko Llewyn (nikollewyn) I read about 2-5 hours a day (during my commute, slow periods at work, or any spare moment I can find). I end up completing somewhere between 5-10 books per week.

Anna (lilfox) | 199 comments Mistress wrote: "I read about 2-5 hours a day (during my commute, slow periods at work, or any spare moment I can find). I end up completing somewhere between 5-10 books per week."

Oh my God. I also read during my commute, if there is not a crowd in a bus or tram.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

At the moment, I am reading a lot, especially because I took a very demanding English class - we get about 3 books as an assignment every week. Whenever I am stuck with my regular class load that doesn't involve lit classes and work etc, I mostly don't have the time to read daily. I read 31 books last year, but that doesn't mean that I read a book every 1,5 weeks or so, it's more that I read a book a day or every two days during breaks.

message 11: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (melchycat) | 27 comments I read on my lunch break. So that give me about half an hour of reading everyday. Unless I get beside a person who insists on talking, while I'm trying to read! It usually takes two weeks to get through a book, but longer if it's longer.

message 12: by Chris (new)

Chris | 2 comments I just started reading Jodi Picoult's Keeping Faith, am finding the writer a definite page turner. I'm up to p80 so far. It generally takes me a week or so to get through a book, will keep an eye on how long I read each day. I read just over thirty books last year, have no target this year as yet. I have a collection of books given as presents so have to get through them.
Looking forward to current book have found at the local library, so thats on the agenda for this month.

Miranda Goodwin Mistress wrote: "I read about 2-5 hours a day (during my commute, slow periods at work, or any spare moment I can find). I end up completing somewhere between 5-10 books per week."

That is so inspiring - I'm a new mom and my 4 month old won't allow me to read 1/2 that much :) I read whenever I can, especially when it's slow at work. I average about a book every 2 weeks or so.

message 14: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) I average about a book a week. I read 53 books last year, short of my goal of 60. I read some long ones in the first several months of the year, but then I picked a bunch of shorter ones to try reach my goal. I don't have cable, so that helps.

message 15: by Arctic (new)

Arctic | 571 comments Ed, you come up with the most interesting questions. i sometimes wonder whether you're a paid sociologist or something. ;)

I'm with the slower book-finishers, much to my chagrin. I'm lucky if I get a half hour in every day and finish a book every two weeks. I do enjoy my tv, though I don't feel that I watch very much - 2-3 hours per week. I think the internet probably saps more of my book-reading time than tv.

message 16: by Ann (new)

Ann | 345 comments Typically 1/2 hour a day. Some days it's more, but then others it's (sadly) not at all...

message 17: by Rebecca, the princess of prose (new)

Rebecca Curtis | 70 comments Mod
When I have a book that I have been waiting for I can sit and read for 3 hours a night, I am a speed reader so I don't take very long to read a book but I try to read every day if possible!

message 18: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) | 7 comments I read about 1-2 books a week on average. I just started taking the train to and from work though so I'm hoping that will bump it up to 3 books a week.

message 19: by Renata (new)

Renata (renata_rush) Usually, I read a book per month. But some books I can finish on a weekend.

message 20: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 8 comments It usually depends on how much I'm into the book, but it usually takes me one month per book. The page turners vary from days to a couple weeks. I'm usually busy with school and other things to focus a lot on reading. I love watching my favorite shows too so that cuts into my time as well.

message 21: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiekay07) | 9 comments Depending on length and interest in the book, I'd say, when I actually sit down and read instead of getting sidetracked by T.V. or Facebook or whatever, that I get about 2 books a week done. I can usually, if I really want, finish books in about 3 nights on days that I work and have things to do...But sometimes I want to drag it out, especially if it's a really good book. I should keep track of how many I read this year :)

message 22: by Natty (new)

Natty (naartjie) I am always reading three books at a time. A difficult novel, a light read and a foreign language. The light read is a new book every week. If I did not have Book Mooch I would be quite poor by now . (I live in Japan, and have no library options)

message 23: by Kristel (new)

Kristel | 165 comments I always get sidetracked :( I read on the train to and from work, that gives me about 1 hour a day. And I read in my bed before falling asleep, about 20 minutes or less. Not that much :(

I have to read a lot for my job as well, but that's non-fiction (although, with history your never quite sure :)).

message 24: by Rozelyn (new)

Rozelyn | 1 comments Last semester about 2-3 books a week. I had three English classes going at once (university year 2!), I pretty much crammed reading in everywhere just so I would get them done haha. Now I never leave my house without a book. If I'm waiting for class to start, I read. Waiting for my food to cook I read...and so on.

message 25: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Duffy (kathleenduffy) I read whenever I have free time. Sometimes I can finish 3 books in 3 days, and other times it takes me two weeks just to finish one! I blame college for this.

message 26: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) I used to be able to read around 3 books a week. Lately though, I'm lucky if I can get through one. Yikes! I guess life has gotten a bit busier (which is a good thing), so I've allowed my reading to fall to the wayside.

message 27: by Katie (new)

Katie I would love to read a book a week, that is a great ny resolution Ed. I use to be able to read 1 every couple days. Now my goal is to read out loud every day to my son (who is 1) but it only last for a couple pages right now so it will take us a long time to get through a book. I do get in about 1/2 hour at bedtime before i am completely zonked. But there are times when I just can't put a book down and I stay up all night reading ( a nice little escape for me). I get through a book

Jean Valjean (OG 2010) (courfeyrack) A book and a half perhaps?

message 29: by Gitte (new)

Gitte (gittetofte) I try to read 1 book a week, but sometimes I'm just too busy with work and school that I only manage to read a bit on weekends, and then I miss it so much...

message 30: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I don't think I could put an actual time on it. I try to read at least an hour before bedtime. Sometimes that works better than others because I just fall asleep some nights. I have a harder time during the school semester finishing books either because it takes so long or I have a hard time settling on one. I'm much more productive during the summer.

message 31: by Dhvani (new)

Dhvani | 3 comments I read a couple of books a week. 4-5 orless or more, depending on how busy that particular week is. I try to read a lot, beacause when I dont read for awhile, it just doesn't seem right.

message 32: by Candace (new)

Candace Madera (candacemadera) Not enough! I probably read 1-2 hours a day during the week longer on weekends when my 3 year old is napping.

message 33: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 1 comments About 1-3 hours a day on weekdays, weekends however, way too busy with homework so I'd be lucky to get an hour in on weekends. Hard to avoid T.V though, sometimes it's just a lot more relaxing just to sit and watch a movie with friends. How many books a week? It's hard to say... I'm reading a book at the moment with about 1350 pages so it's not really your average kind of book.

message 34: by Kristel (new)

Kristel | 165 comments I finally managed to read a few books because I was on holiday on a faraway island! It has been months since I was able to finish a book and now I read 2 in two weeks time. I really envy some of you, being to read as much as you do. At night mostly I'm just exhausted, I finish work around 5 p.m, take the train (25 minutes in which I should be able to read some, but mostly spent the ride talking with my colleagues on the same train)...take the bus to my sons daycare, pick him up, 6 p.m: home, start cooking, feed son, bade son, put him into bed and then (it's about 8.30 p.m) clean up and couch potato in front of TV...any remedies against this? I used to read a lot before falling asleep, but...exhaustion :) Maybe it will get better when Alexander is older (he's 15 months now).

message 35: by Alex (new)

Alex | 1 comments I read between 2-4 hours a day. Part of this is on the job (I'm an elementary school reading tutor), but most of it is after school. I'm a book addict. I usually finish three books a week, but if it's summer, it could be a book a day.

message 36: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (sandrakay) | 2 comments I usually read at night for a couple of hours. I am a teacher so I take advantage of my time off in the summer to read daily.

message 37: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama | 16 comments My goal this year is to read 50 books a year, so that means around 1 book a week at least. During college, I used to be able to read 2 - 3 books per week, but now with work and other activities, my average reading is 1 book per week, longer sometimes if the book is over 400 pages.

Hmm I spend 2 - 3 hours reading each day at most. I read on the way to work, and when I'm on the road, and before bed each night. TV and movie plays a major part in the slowing down of my reading. I love watching series on DVD. But I'm trying to finish at least 1 -2 books per week.

message 38: by M (new)

M | 12 comments Ugh, with physics and calculus eating up all my time I don't have very much time to read. I read for at least an hour a day though. I guess about a book a week, averaged. Sometimes I read really short things and other times I read hefty classics.

message 39: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelcheri) | 2 comments I try to read daily either during my lunch break or right before bed! This drives my husband crazy! Lol! :)

message 40: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Nash I had a baby 9 weeks ago, so since then I get in a few pages a day which is sad. Before my daughter was born I was reading a minimum of one book a week. In time I am sure I will be able to read more, but for now time with my little one is precious...Oh do I get to count the books I read to her? If so then I read at least a dozen a week. :)

message 41: by Teal (new)

Teal (tealismyname) I read 1-2 books a week. I can read more...as I read quite fast and am right now unemployed :( so I read about 3-4 hours a day. However, i choose not to read more than that because I have to give myself some breathing room to take what i've just read in.

Question to everyone who reads more 2 books per week. Do you give yourself any absorption time? How long does that usually take? When you put a book down, do you just instantly move on to the next one?

I need a day or two to process a great book (the reader was my most recent one...needed a week for that one) and maybe a few hours if it was just a thriller or something.

message 42: by A.U.C. (new)

A.U.C. (antoniafuc) | 12 comments urgh! :( I feel so sad. I sometimes read a few minutes a day, unless I'm reading a really good book and then it's about an hour. To make matters worse, my goal was to read 40 books this year, and I've only got 16!

message 43: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 100 comments I use to read a lot. Depending on the book, I can read a book in a day and if I do, I usually need a day or so to think about it. Some books I just couldn't get over for days. Like The Thirteenth Tale. But I feel bad because for the past month I have been in a rut! I have been unable to read at all! ...readers block? I have started 3 different books thinking it was just the genre I was uninterested in... I just don't know what to do!

message 44: by Jennie (new)

Jennie (jen748) | 4 comments I read about 10-20 hours a week...usually most of my lunch hour each day plus an hour or so each night after my daughter goes to sleep.

message 45: by Paul (new)

Paul | 3 comments I have eye problems so listen to all my books. I listen three hours a day during the week and six to eight hours on the weekends. I listen to two books a week except when they are very long. For me, the enjoyment of the book is often colored by the reader. A bad reader can ruin a good book. For example, I read John LeCarre's "The Honorable Schoolboy" many years ago and loved it. I listened to the audio version and couldn't finish it. However, a good reader can make the language heavenly. A good example is, "The tin roof blow down" by James Lee Burke. The reader is so luscious with his southern drawl that it captures the also luscious language of the books.

Hey, Jessica, sorry you're in a reading funk. Why don't you try listening to a book? Go to audible.com. They have a big selection and many of the books are very reasonable. Maybe this will break you out of the block.

message 47: by P. (new)

P. (shimizusan) I read between 2-3 books a week. 4 if I'm in a good mood.

message 48: by Pinky_rocks (new)

Pinky_rocks | 5 comments It depends on various things...Sometimes there's not a lot to do at work or I don't have any plans for my afternoons, then I read about 2-3 books a week (if they're not too hard to read or too long). weekends I spend at my boyfriend's place and there's not much spare time for reading. but I'd say I manage at least 2 books a week.

message 49: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (ramblingbooks) | 57 comments It depends, mostly on how much work I have to do for school. I try to read everyday, but don't always have time. Sometimes I can get through a bunch of books in a week, other weeks I can't even get through one. Not enough hours in the day unfortunately *sighs*.

message 50: by Nikoline (new)

Nikoline (annenikoline) If I don't count the time I spend reading for university, I'd say I read an hour but I read several hours during the weekend.
