Normally I try to be all minimalist and not into possessions, but as I was making creamed spinach tonight (yum) I was thinking how very much I love my garlic press.
It might just be one of my very favorite wedding presents. I use it every time I cook with garlic, and I never get stinky fingers.

What else do I love?

My little reading light that looks like a pale blue JabbaTheHut. It is so friendly shaped, and bright, and it is like a little bean bag that perches on my chest.
When I use it on the airplane during night flights the stewardesses always ooh and aaah over it.

What are a few of your favorite, simple, silly everyday things?
Not necessarily what you would take with you if your house was burning down, but what you appreciate each and every time you use it for its sheer usefulness or cheerfulness?

Mary (madamefifi) I love my Pom Tea glasses. I have several of them and I just won't drink out of anything else. They are the perfect size.

I have those too!

Sweeter scorns them and always talks about throwing them out, but I find them easier to hold onto with my chubby little hands. And, they seem to be thicker and more break-resistant.

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Sally, do you have a pic of your JTH light? I've been searching for a good booklight for ages!

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (BPAL) perfumes, which I have mentioned in a different thread.

Grapefruit fizzy water

Mary JL (maryjl) | 250 comments Anice multi=colored afghan my aunt made for me. Just perfect for throwing over my lap when reading on a chilly winter night.

My small solid wood bookcase from my folks. Fits just perfectly into a small corner.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I love warm socks.

I love the electric tea kettle I use at work.

My flannel sleeping bag, too, although I usually lay (lie?) on it.

Those Pom Tea glasses look cool, Mary...

I have a Newcastle Brown with your name on it.

message 13: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I told you, Jim!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes you did. Loss #2 in a row comes Saturday versus Purdue. Purdue just looks good to me, no big fault.

message 15: by Catalina (last edited Jan 08, 2010 08:47AM) (new)

Catalina | 268 comments I'm going to go ahead and add the "Beast of Burden" by The Stones. I mean, damn!

Done.

Félix (habitseven) I like that I live in a place where no matter how much it snows, I don't have to shovel a single flake of the stuff.

I also like having cats around, even though their fur and litter-trackings are in constant need of attention.

message 19: by Heidi (last edited Jan 08, 2010 09:28AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I ♥ emoticons!

I also ♥ my postcards received collection and my retro/antique apron collection. My most favorite of all would definitely be Robby. He wins, no contest. I love him more than people.

message 20: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I like office supplies, esp. the free office supply cabinet at work.

I like the way the floor looks after I sweep.

I like candles in the room in which I've already slept the floor.

message 21: by Jackie "the Librarian" (last edited Jan 08, 2010 02:47PM) (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Ooh, office supplies! Erasers! You can't have too many erasers, you know. :)

I love art supplies, too, tubes of watercolor paints, colored pencils, notepads, and especially mechanical pencils:

message 22: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Erasers are great earring savers.

message 25: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments you guys write with pencils?

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Extremely good.

message 27: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments ah. right. (or write i should say). i was thinking like a #2 ticonderoga

I just keep pencils around in case I need an emergency eraser bit.

You must wear earrings a lot, Heids. I only wear the hook kind if I do, and that's rare.

I keep pencils around for crossword working.

message 30: by Heidi (last edited Jan 08, 2010 08:32PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I do wear lots of earrings... and I switch them out at least once a week. Mostly the backing falling out happens with the stud earrings, like diamond studs and pearls... those are my old standards. I wear them alot. Catholic school influenced that habit (we couldn't wear earrings that fell below the earlobe).

Mary (madamefifi) Larry wrote: "I also like having cats around, even though their fur and litter-trackings ar..."

Me, too! There's something so relaxing about cats. They're better than Xanax. Though not as portable.

message 32: by Catalina (new)

Catalina | 268 comments Fireplaces. It's 2:14am, I just got home, and it's bleedin' freezing.

Fireplaces.

message 33: by Karin (new)

Karin (writteninitalics) | 2 comments I love my flat. It's a train ride away from Tokyo but the perfect distance for a full view of the city skyline. Plus, there's lots of little nooks and crannies built in so I can arrange my things without cluttering up the place with shelves and such. Simple and efficient.

My cat and I are content just sitting against a wall, bathing in the sunshine that fills the house. What more could a city girl ask for?

message 34: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Welcome to TC, Karin! Sounds great for you and your cat...

message 35: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, I almost started a separate thread for these, but the topic will fit as well here. The spring gardening catalogs are starting to arrive, and paging through the cool potential plants, even if I never actually buy/install them, is a blast.

Jung's Seeds, one of my favorite catalog companies, is based not far from my house, and sometimes when I'm out in the way rural areas I drive by their test fields.

Thank you! I plan to make goodreads one of my dailies this year.

Oh, seed catalogues....lovelovelovelove.

message 38: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i used to love when seed catalogs came as we would begin planning flowers and veggie garden's as well as look at tree's and such.

message 39: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments my buckwheat hull bolster pillow. It's officially for when my neck hurts but in reality it's just for me to snuggle with.

little bowl of river rocks that sits by my computer at work.

non-stick wok-like pan which I use for everything.

buttons.

message 40: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Buttons on clothing, or push buttons?

message 41: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments clothing buttons. But push buttons would be funny.

message 42: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
One of my favorite things when I was ittybitty was my mom's metal sewing jar full of odd buttons. It makes me want to start a button collection just for my wee to play with - but they're probably not supposed to have them nowadays for choking reasons.

I don't think I ever even rode in a car seat in the 70s. My mom says I was in a cardboard box in the backseat but I can't tell if she's kidding.

message 43: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Mine says they hung me from the roll bar. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

message 44: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I loved my mother's button stash, too. I have my own, now. Every time I go anywhere that sells buttons I like to get some. The husband is always needing me to sew new buttons onto his clothes and I always want to use the clever little ceramic bunny buttons or similar, but I refrain.

message 45: by Catalina (new)

Catalina | 268 comments When I was a baby, my parents had to drag my car seat up a hill by a rope both ways to the store with a nail in my tush.

Félix (habitseven) Catalina wrote: "When I was a baby, my parents had to drag my car seat up a hill by a rope both ways to the store with a nail in my tush. "

OMG I almost believed this.

message 47: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) My grandfather was a button cutter. He ran a machine like this one:

They used to cut buttons from various mollusk shells.

message 48: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I love shell buttons! Really I prefer almost anything to plastic buttons, though they are cheaper and more durable.

message 49: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments Some of my favorite things: my large coffee mug with Jack Skellington's face. There's also a Mickey Mouse mug I've had for years that's always the first to get used. My comfy chair and ottoman in my front room.

I'm a office supply nut too. I buy my own pens and mechanical pencils for work instead of using the cheap ones in the office.

message 50: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments One of my favorite things: chocolate.

Another favorite thing: the Internet and Web (that's two things, I know, but in my mind it's all one big thing)

Others: Google, seat warmers.

PS I also loved to play with buttons when I was a kid - my grandmother had a huge jar full of buttons and I would dump them out and arrange them, then have to find them all to put them away. None of them were particularly funky, but I still loved them.
