Nicole (nicolemumey) Can I count all plays and Graphic Novels as part of my 50?

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 117 comments I vote yes! Some would disagree. But then, it's a personal challenge, so all that really matters is whether or not you think they should count. :)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) Its like golf...you're challenging yourself. Its not like you're counting mag articles or newspaper columns. I say full plays and graphic novels should count.

Sherri (sherrij2003) People count Shakespeare and they are plays so I say go for it!

Nicole (nicolemumey) Some Shakespeare and A Streetcar Named Desire was my plan. Thanks for the support ladies!

Adrianna [SypherLily] (sypherlily) And I agree, it's a personal challenge. Go for it :]

Betsy (thebeblend) | 43 comments I'm planning to count some of the children's books I read to my son, so I think that a play is definitely fair game.

Joe (joewig) | 106 comments Our goal is to completely read at least 50 books a year. What type of books is totally up to the individual. We all have our own tastes, likes and dislikes.

A play is a book; a novel (graphic or otherwise) is a book; although we listen to it with our ears and heart, an audiobook is a book too.

We can limit ourselves or allow ourselves the freedom to explore a varied reading palette.

I for one plan to read as much as I can of what interests, encourages and/or teaches me. In 2008 I only read about 9 books (including my encyclopedic 66 book bible), but in 2009, I read 43 books (I got a Kindle). I hope to do much more than 50 this year because I'm making room to read (and on a variety of platforms as well).

It wasn't that long ago when it was illegal to teach certain types of people to read. And even today, illiteracy plagues us. We need to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself to read, even if it's reading a graphic novel TO someone.

Reading is important. It always has been.
