AAAlien hi :) and i share that opinion :)

Erica (storybookend) I'm Erica. 19 yr old college student, may be going into Nursing. I love reading! (duh) I love young adult fantasy. I love Fablehaven, oh my gosh!! Some of my other fav books include: percy jackson, brightly woven, graceling, fire, iron king, academy 7, jane eyre, pride and prejudice. Besides reading, well, I don't have much of a life. Reading is my life, and writing. I'm currently writing a book, and hopefully *crosses fingers* it will someday be published.

message 253: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (yabookshelf) @Erica: Welcome! I see that you like Jane Eyre - it's my favorite book as well. I recently read and reviewed the monster mashup version called Jane Slayre on my site, and I thought it was great.

If you (and anyone else really) is interested, I'll be posting an interview tomorrow on my blog with the writer of Jane Slayre, Sherri Erwin. I think you'll all love her responses to my questions, but more than that, you can feel free to leave questions on the post as Sherri will be popping by periodically throughout the day to respond to them!

Erica (storybookend) I'm hesitant to read books like that, like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because I love the classics so much, and I'm afraid that reading classics transformed into parnormal stuff might taint how I feel about the real books. I did just read the description to Jane Slayre, and it sounds funny. So maybe I would like these books more than I thought.

message 255: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (yabookshelf) @Erica: I can't say anything about Pride And Prejudice And Zombies as I haven't read it myself and I've heard some odd things like they throw in flatulance jokes for some reason...strange.

I can, however, say that Jane Slayre was really done in a loving way. She doesn't just add things to be funny where they don't make sense, but she definitely adds something special to it. It's possible that you won't like it, but I'm all for the classics myself (have an MA in 19th C. lit). This was just a fun new take on it in my humble opinion.

Sherri is answering questions all day long, so come on by, leave a question in the comments, and she'll respond: Today only!

Erica (storybookend) Woot! I love this group. Out of all the groups I've joined, this is the one that I can't stay away from. Pretty much the only one I comment in. A perfect way to waste my time when I'm not reading. Thanks Heather for creating it! :)

Hey Sandi,

My name is April and it looks like we share a lot of the same tastes in reading - I love historical fiction, more about that later - we need to compare lists, I think.

But what caught my eye about your post right now is one of the books I'm reading right now:

The Challice by Phil Rickman (be aware, there are a lot of other books by the same title)

Anyway, I thought you might find this one interesting as it brings together both fantasy, history and mystery.

It's modern day Glasonbury and Avalon, fantasy/history of the area and pagan practices, etc, AND it is a bit of a ?murder (not totally sure whether we actually have a murder yet; as i'm 1/3 in).

So, I wouldn't classify The Challice as horror; put it is errie and mysterious; so maybe you'd like to give it a try?

Let me know if you do, okay?

And I'll through Phlippa Gregory and Margaret George out as two of my most favorite writers of historical fiction. Tell me some of yours, and maybe I;ll find some new ones to read.

Thanks,
April

message 274: by April (new)

April (aprilsreading) Hi everyone,

Getting a little ahead of myself here - commenting on comments before giving a proper intro.

My name is April and I am a long-time, avid reader. Mostly fiction/literature, have read a lot of classics (recently Silas Marner), and some non-fiction too.

I've spent the last few years reading a lot of historical fiction; recently finished Wolf Hall), , and The Constant Princess); SciFi; have read a lot of Robert j Sawyer (especially Calculating God - loved it and am in the middle of his Parallex/homid series).

I also really enjoy audio books - this has easily added another two/books/week to my 'reading'.

I'm enjoying poking around in this labrythian Books Are My Life group - I'm in the middle of Breakably Yours. I hope I can find my way to the correct link when discussion starts on June 15th - I will accept whatever guidance anyone has to offer.

Thanks,
April

Kelly (kelly_girl33) Hi! I'm Kelly.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) hi april & welcome! the book you recommend sounds right up my aisle!I have noticed alot of books are called the challice.my favorite authors? um...that depends..I LIKE alot of authors..but a favorite to me means..the book (or series) caught me right away..kept me reading..and I keep it and re-read again and enjoy even more 2nd time around! so my fav's at the moment are: terry goodkind-sword of truth series. diana gabaldon-outlander series.and my favorite author is carlos ruz zafon wrote the shadow & the wind & the angels game. I loved these I have them in hard cover & soft! book about books, mystery, love story. highly recommend I also will "multi-read" if a book isnt keeping me. if you love historical fiction join the club Im there too and they have great recommends!

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) welcome all you new who just joined!

message 278: by April (new)

April (aprilsreading) Hey Sandi,

Clearly we share a lot of authors: I really ejoyed the Diana Gabaldon series and turned a lot of my friends on to her.

And a friend urged me to try carlos ruz zafon's Shadow and the Wind turned out to be one of my fave reads last year. It felt a little like South American magic realism (eg marquez 100 Years of Solitude X John Irving - The World According to Garp mash up ;-). The characters were so quirky but endearing. I'll have to look for the second title of his you mentioned. When I really like one book by an author, I'm always excited to check out their other work. I must have alredy been reading a lot of books last year when I read Shadow and the Wind. I'm adding it to my Check it Out list right now.

I didn't realize there is a historical fiction club - I'll go look for that too.

And seriously, check out Phillipa Gregory and Margaret George when you have a chance.

Off to bed to read.
G'night,
April

message 279: by April (new)

April (aprilsreading) oh, oh, Sandi, and anyone else interested in historical fiction, and please, please check out:

The Secret Book of Grazia de Rossi,
by Jaqueline Park

It's historical fiction of Renaissance Italy, and the main character is Grazia and she's the daughter of Jewish bankers (Christians were prohited from commiting usury/charging interest - so they left it to the jews).

Park worked on this book for ten years and she only has one other earlier one. And since she's written so little; you might miss this one and that would be a shame.

Let me know if you read it and what you thought, okay?

Now, i am definitely going to bed to read!

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) hi april..carlos 2nd book angles game is a prequel to shadow of the wind.dont know why they do that..Im hoping he writes a 3rd being julian story. gosh..look at my bookshelf..I have all margaret george & phillipa gregory! :) I did try jaqueline parks book..couldnt get into it.maybe I should give another try...

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) bluemoon..I have both these in hard cover & soft.
I LOVED these books!! 5 star for me..its a mystery, book about the love of books, got some romance...I would read the angels game first as it is the prequel but was written second..but it dosent matter which order. did you read in my profile "about me" I say "a room without books is like a body without a soul" quote from shadow of the wind! try the library if your not sure hope this helps :)

message 287: by Becky (new)

Becky (becky00) Hi my name is Becky, I'm a mom of 2. I loved reading as a teen but kind of got out of it when i had kids. My love of reading has returned (I think the twilight series got me back into it). I'm currently reading the uglies/pretties series but my list contains a wide range of books. I would appreciate any suggestions of books to add to my list. I don't have the ability to sit down for an hour to read and can only read for 10-15 min intervals as I'm chasing a 3 year old and entertaining a 5 month old...so if you have any suggestions for "easy" reads I would also appreciate that.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) welcome becky! this is a great group! lots of members will have great suggestions for you here.
also browse around here and read what people are reading...I rememember those days of only 10-15 min to yourself...now I can enjoy the long reads!

Hi Becky :)

Welcome to the group, I hope you enjoy yourself here.
As for suggestions what kind of books do you like best? What age range, genre, length?

message 290: by Becky (new)

Becky (becky00) I only get short periods where i get a minute to read so I like books that do not have too many characters and can be put down for a few days...picked back up and you don't feel like you are completely lost. I love YA books. I started off with vampires series but i would really like to get into other characters (ie angels, werewolves) or even a good mystery. I'm open to any suggestions.

Some That I would suggest than are:
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick Kiss Me Kill Me by Lauren Henderson Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

Those are probably the ones that fit best under the discription that you gave.

message 292: by *Mrs. Brightside* (new)

*Mrs. Brightside* My name is Princess (I know right?) and I love reading! I read ALL types of books! Im currently reading Time Traveler's Wife, and just finished Some Girls Are... You can give me any book suggestions to read if you want because Im always looking for a new book! (Becky you should probably also read the Blood coven series? idk if thats what the series is called, but one of the books are called Bad Blood)

message 293: by KS (new)

KS (kdcsw) Hello, everyone. I'm Alex Lee (not my real name. :) And I love reading - of course I do. Why would I be in GoodReads if I don't like reading? I'm thirteen and I'm from Canada.

Anyway, I like reading angst/tragedy books. So, if any of you guys have any suggestions, please tell me.

I'm currently reading If I Stay by Gayle Forman and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Both books are good. But I must say, THe Book Thief is more interesting.
