Heather | 8548 comments These are just a few suggestions; Remember, if you choose to read a book in this category (and it can be any book about symbolism in art) please put your name and the name of the book under 'comment'. You may even let us know your progress and what you are learning. When you finish the book, we look forward to your review!

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 1140 comments Another book I have on my shelves -- Symbols and Allegories in Art (Guide to Imagery Series) by Mathilde Battistini. I purchased this book when I began volunteering as a docent.

That sounds like a fascinating book Carol! I think I am going to have to go see if I can find it at the library and have that be my book for March.

Jim | 147 comments I'm going to read THE ALPHABET VERSUS THE GODDESS by Leonard Shlain
the book description is that the rise of the alphabet transformed the human brain from right sided, holistic that venerated the Goddess, femine values to the left side dominance and patriarchial rule
I'll see how much it goes into art symbolism and keep reading it if it is on point for the monthly book challenge
if not I might second Andrew's choice

This book looks really interesting, Jim. I added it to my 'to read' list whether it discusses art or not! Let us know what you think!

Heather | 8548 comments I read your review, Carol. Two stars, it must have been 'a big disappointment'! No wonder you weren't happy with it when you can't even look up a single subject to find out what it symbolizes. I had a book called Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art by James Hall
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...
that was a really good reference book, but not one that you would sit down and actually read. I carried it with me when we were studying the Renaissance Art in Europe as the Renaissance used A LOT of symbolism in their paintings.
