Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran

AJ (anersword) | 121 comments I liked both the The Count of Monte Cristo and The Hunger Games. I resisted Hunger games for a long time because it was so popular and I thought it would be lame. But I am glad I finally caved. I finished it in one day.

Joanie | 1 comments Still working on it as it's nearly 900 pages, but thinking this could be in the running for all of 2010... Shadow Country (Modern Library) by Peter Matthiessen

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Joanie, this looks good!

The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, Version 2.0 by Christopher Moore

I just finished it yesterday... I've never laughed out loud so many times with a book before in my *life*. Instant favorite.

Peace Like a River
by Leif Enger. I just finished it today and it is lovely. I posted a review.

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarah23l) I agree with AJ - I'm going to have to go with The Hunger Games.

message 16: by Krys (new)

Krys (incognerdo) | 140 comments I picked it up in December at a used book store. I can't wait to read it. And in the back of the book he tells you where else you can find your favorite characters. I loved Roberto and Tucker Case, so I guess I'm going to have to find Island of the Sequined Love Nun.

message 17: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments So far... Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian

Great character study, but the end was too quick and neat...seemed like the author just ran out of plot.

message 18: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Brittany, I just mooched that book. I loved Midwives so I wanted another Bohjalian book and got this one. Thanks for the heads up on the ending. That's disappointing, but sounds like its still worth a read.

It's pretty good overall, but after all the time you spend getting to know the characters and feeling them, the end comes too quickly and there was a big transition near the end that came out of nowhere. But the characters are great, and you find yourself sorry for some and hating others.

Bernadette (bernadetteg) | 1 comments The Girl Who Played with Fire the second book in the Millenium trilogy. This is some of the best mystery/thriller writing I've ever read. I lived in Sweden for 5 years,'03-'08 and had heard about it from my Swedish friends. I finally know what all the excitement was about! Just so sad to have lost this great author at such a young age, just when he was reaching world-wide acclaim. Read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in December and can't wait for the final book in March!!

I tried to read it this past year. I think I couldn't get past the second page. :( I hate to think of my puppy getting old like that.

Andrea, this can't be my favorite book of 2010, since I read it in 2008, but it is one of my favorite books of all time!

Kristin, is your puppy this only dog you've ever owned, or have you ever owned and lost a dog? I have owned several dogs that are now gone, and in fact had a dog die at age 20 the year before I read this book, so maybe that is why I could relate to it so much.

Krys (incognerdo) | 140 comments Lucky is the first that is *all* mine. We've had family dogs that lived to ripe old ages and passed away... but Lucky's the one that's been with me through some tough spots.

I'm going to give the book another go this year. My bestie sent it to me for Christmas, so it is in my house staring at me now. :)

Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh

...but I'll mitigate this with the fact that its the only one I've read all through so far!

I'm half-way through Germinal by Émile Zola...which is absolutely fantastic!

Kristin, I thought the same thing when I first started it, but it only lasts a couple of pages (I promise) and then the rest of the book is funny, heartwarming, and endearing. Do give it another try. It will be totally worth it.

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Kaliki, Thanks for the advise! I just got The Art of Racing in the Rain and am hesitating to read it!

Melissa Harris You're welcome! Enjoy it ~ you'll be glad you did.

message 32: by Peanut (new)

Peanut | 149 comments My reading time has been severely limited so far this year. I've only read three books (at least three that I finished in 2010).

Based on stars, my "fav" has to be the 2nd book in Mysterious Benedict Society. And that certainly won't last as I'm bound to read something I enjoyed much more.

Let me know what you think, I was disappointed at what happened in the end of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but I really liked Salander's character and was going to pick up the next one to see if we find more out about her.

I loved that book! It was on my shelf for two years before I brought myself to read it because I thought I would not like it, but I ended up LOVING it!

Probably my favorite of 2010 so far... I started The Help then got sidetracked and haven't finished it (only read about 10 pages)... I am going to start reading it again tonight! I may have to post again tomorrow :-)

Carol King (cking5634) | 1 comments My favorite is "A Big Little Life" A Big Little Life A Memoir of a Joyful Dog by Dean Koontz by Dean Koontz. This is a touching true story of his amazing relationship with his incredible golden retriever. Keep the tissues nearby. Not your typical Koontz. I also liked "Close Encounters of the Third Grade Kind" [image error] . I'm not a teacher or even a mom of a third grader (they're older) but kids are funny and so is this book. I appreciate teachers and if you are thinking of becoming one, this should be on your nightstand!

Okay, I've read 6 books so far in 2010, and just last night finished my first 5-star book for this year.
It is Alcestis Alcestis by Katharine Beutner by Katharine Beutner.

It was an excellent novel about Alcestis, a minor character in Greek mythology. The book fleshes out her whole story though, and writes it as a historical novel. The story actually makes you believe the characters, both mortals and gods, are real.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Corkdork, if you liked Snow Flower and the Secret Fan then you may like Peony in Love. It's nearly as good! But Shanghai Girls disappointed me compared to See's other books.
