Thanks Melody! Sadly, it looks like Cards of Grief is out of print so I can't find much info on that one. The Gaea series doesn't look as interesting to me. It looks like it's too much straight-up sci-fi for my taste. I like my sci-fi with a fairly heavy does of romance and typically find male authors give it too heavy a hand for my liking as well. *shrug* Thanks for the suggestions, though!

I just finished reading the book for my "author that was born the same year as you" challange. I read Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore. Overall, it was surprisingly good. If it wasn't for this challenge, I'm not sure that I would have ever read it. Just reading the info about it didn't really catch my interest. But it made for an interesting topic and story.
I did feel like some of the emotions and events were a bit shallow. I think that it's a lot more likely that people would have reacted a lot more strongly to certain events than how these characters acted. I also would have like to see more emotion. But it was intriguing, and I intend to read the next book when it comes out!

I've bought a lot of 6 of Linnea Sinclair's books based on your recommendation. No pressure Yz. :)

Just finished The Soft Edge of Midnight Keepers of Twilight . I would not recommend it. It would have been a DNF for me except there were no other authors born in 1979 that I could get my hands on. The character dialogue felt so fake and forced and that was probably the worst part of it for me. The writing left a lot to be desired and the two main characters were claiming their love for one another the same day they met (one of my biggest pet peeves).

Ok, so the "new to you" book isn't a PN but it is a romance. :o) Someone in one of my groups recommended this book, which is why I found and read it. I did enjoy it. I like a flawed hero, but one who manages to overcome his flaws--or at least, when the flaws are physical, learns to deal with them. Plus any time there's a kid in the story, I'm guaranteed to love it.
The Singh book I'd been on the waiting list at the library FOREVER for. But I'm enjoying her Psy-changling series--I just wish that they'd get here faster than they are. Sigh, guess everyone wants to read them, huh?
Yz--on the "second chance" author--what if you give them that second chance and STILL can't get through the book because you still hate the way they write? Does the book count, or should we (er, ok, I) be looking for another author for this category?

Martina, sorry those titles didn't work for you. While the Varley series isn't strictly scifi, you're right about the romance element being downplayed. Cards of Grief is very scifi for Yolen, and while it does feature a romance, it's bittersweet. Still, if you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. :O/

Just finished A Girl's Guide to Vampires (Dark Ones, Book 1) by Katie MacAlister which I give 3 stars.
This book is true paranormal romance and falls on the sillier side of the genre. The protagonist, Joy, and her friend, Roxy, are fans of a romance author who writes books about alleged, Dark Ones, or vampires. They travel to Eastern Europe in search of the author and in hopes of finding a Dark One of their own. Before long, Joy & Roxy find themselves in the middle of a local Goth Faire celebration, with the attention of three men, and a murder investigation. Which of the men, if any, are Dark Ones, and who is the murderer?
The writing is pretty typical of the sillier side of the genre, but not quite as good, in my opinion, as MacAlister's two connected Dragon Sept series. Joy and Roxy are both rather vapid and despite being friends, bitch at each other pretty much constantly, which I found rather annoying. The male characters were significantly more interesting than the ladies, but in the end, I find it's hard to really love a book when you just can't understand how a couple fits together. Sorry, but Joy is just not worthy of any of the men falling over themselves for her attention! Still, the book was a fun, quick read and I've already purchased the second one for download on my Nook to be enjoyed sometime in the future.

Shiver was fantastic. Great characters, excellent writing, a really cool take on werewolves. It will be hard to wait until mid-summer for the sequel. I highly recommend it.
Another great book from Elizabeth Vaughan. White Star continued right where Dagger-Star left off, but with different main characters. Vaughan does such a great job with mixing just the right amount of romance, magic, and adventure. I'm looking forward to her next book which she thoughfully and cleverly lets the reader know which characters will be the next books main characters. She continues to be my favorite author.
I was a little disappointed by Staked. There were some inconsistencies in the world that was created. Sometimes to the point of confusing the hell out of me. Lots of sarcasm and dry humor, which is good, decent characters and an okay plot. I'm sure I will read the sequel, but I'm not rushing out to buy it based on this book.
Well, I am glad that I gave the author of Angel of Mercy a second chance, but I won't be picking up the next book. I bought book 1 (Beg for Mercy) and this book at my library's used book sale last summer. After reading the first book at the beginning of the year, I had put it and this book aside to get rid of. I only spent a dollar total on them so I didn't really care if I hadn't read the second book. Now I can feel like I didn't waste any money, but I sort of wasted my time. I actually struggled to remember who was who and what had happened in the other book even though I read it 6 weeks ago. That says it all, the books are forgettable.

I love those series too! Luckily, I'm not current with Owens or O'Shea, so I have some good reading still ahead of me. :O)
Another series you might like is the Gaea trilogy by John Varley beginning with Titan. And I didn't see the Jane Yolen stand-alone Cards of Grief on your shelves. You may enjoy it as well. You've already read many of my favorites, so I hope these suit. :O)
