1. favorite Death's Mistress by Karen Chance 2/10/10 5* Excellent! Chance can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. I don't know how she does it, but she keeps getting better. I am so thoroughly hooked on her Cassie/Dory world that I suffer serious withdrawals between installments. I really enjoyed Mircea's (softer side) character development in this book, and (even if Dory insists on vehemently denying it) the gentling of the father-daughter relationship. Gave me warm-fuzzies. And WTF is up with LC? Love him, but he needs to get over his little self-pity-party and man up. Seriously. I get that we need to see him suffer and work through things, Karen, I get it. And I appreciate why you do it, and how you do it (love the little shared memory flashbacks, it really saves on tedious retelling and solves the problem of when they will talk about it, and how, etc. - excellent plot device). But he's gonna lose Dory if he doesn't sh*t or get off the pot. She's not exactly the most patient person on the planet. They are both so darn stubborn I just wanna knock their heads together! See what I mean? Chance gets us so invested in these characters that we suffer actual anxiety over their actions and what may or may not happen down the road. That is the sign of a true artist, in my... well, book. :)

4. goodreads Hallowed Circle by Linda Robertson 2/14/10 5* I really enjoy this series so far. It's a treat to find a good UF with a (ok, fairly) accurate portrayal of Wiccans. She writes of ritual casually and comfortably, as if she is Wiccan herself or has at least really done her research. Of course, there are moments where things get a little "fantastic" but isn't that the point of "fantasy"? Robertson does an excellent job of getting us to the point where we can safely suspend belief just long enough to make it work. And for you PNR traditionalists out there, there are vampires (albeit, not very loveable ones) and lots of shifter action going on (Seph's love interest Johnny is a tattooed rock-and-roll musician werewolf). Although I will admit, it took me quite some time to warm up to him in book one Vicious Circle because of his constant juvenile comments laden with cheesy eyebrow-wiggling junior-high sexual innuendo. It bothered me that Seph thinks this kind of thing is funny (it's not, and would normally offend), and it continues in book two, although not quite as blatant. He finally grows up a bit, thank the Goddess.

ALL ABOUT AUTHORS - MARTINA'S LIST - 8/10 COMPLETED!

Just finished reading Come Hell or High Water (Broken Heart, OK, Book 6) by Michele Bardsley which I give 3 stars. The Broken Heart series is about a group of single parents in the town of Broken Heart, Oklahoma who all get attacked one night and are turned into vampires. Each book is about a different one of the so-called "Turn Bloods". They're paranormal romances because of the HEA at the end of each book, but the series itself also has a story arc.

Come Hell or High Water features Phoebe Allen, mother of four-year-old, Danny and member of the vampire family whose powers include a certain amount of control over demons. Phoebe impetuously mates herself to a Scottish hunk named Connor, who turns out to be half-demon and suddenly finds herself in the middle of a quest to locate an ancient talisman and perform a ritual to banish Lilith, a super-demon, back to Hell.

I've always enjoyed the books from this series, but sadly, I find myself less engaged with each new book. :-( They're a fairly quick, light read with lots of humor and a bit of excitement & danger mixed in, but there are some plot holes and consistency mistakes here and there that bother me (and I'm the type of person who usually doesn't notice these things).

For instance: in Come Hell or High Water we're told that Phoebe is the last female vampire of the Durga family line. However, in the glossary of the Broken Heart Turn-Bloods it clearly says that Darlene Clark (whose book I assume we'll see down the line somewhere) is also a member of family Durga. We're also given some information in the glossary about Turn-Blood, Elizabeth Bretton nee Silverstone. She's supposed to be separated from her first husband, Carlton, and has a seventeen year old daughter named Venice who lives with Carlton in LA. However, in the teaser for the next book - Elizabeth's book - it says that her husband is Henry and that Venice is his daughter by another women, and therefore Elizabeth's step-daughter. In the same teaser there's a mention of 18-year old Marybeth Beauchamp, another Turn-Blood that the glossary has listed as being 19 years old.

See what I mean?

Regardless, I'll probably buy the next book because they're a nice entertaining break from heavier reading, but I'm hoping they edit the glossary next time around. . .

OMG, Ana! I loved Andre Norton back when, and I still love her stuff. The first one I read was Moon of Three Rings. in the mid-sixties. I really liked The Crystal Gryphon and its sequels. I still have at least forty of her books. You know they're old when a paperback cost $1.75!

I think I will get three books read this month.

The story was better than the first two. I think what bothered me with the first two was the, "I don't want to tell you I am a vampire" thing. I mean come on, the characters were in love, but did not want to tell them what they are. It was annoying. The third book, was better written and I really liked the guy and girl.

Sandra--um, what $1.75 books? I have some of Norton's works that are 25cents each. lol, and I have a LOT more than just 40. Ok, I admit--some of the books I have multiple copies of--but that's because I LOVE those old 40's, 50's, 60's and even some of the 70's covers. But really by the end of the 60's we getting out of the really neat covers and into kind of blah ones. are 2 examples--and yeah, I have both. Some of the other books have up to 4 or 5 covers each, and I have all of them too. The problem is--I don't have all the hardbacks yet. . . but some day, some day. (Sighing at a future filled with copies of all of Norton's works in all different covers/bindings.)

Um, er, ok, now, where was I (yanking mind back to what the topic is actually about) For my 'male' writer I'm going with a book that isn't at all pnr--its a mystery. The main reason that I'm doing that is because I'm trying to whittle down my tbr pile and all my male authors are either sci-fi or mystery--and for most of the sci-fi I've finished their books. The one I'm reading DOES have a bit about NA spiritualism in it, so I'm counting that. :o)

2. New to me: Deadtown, Nancy Holzner (New concepts, but oh so very meh. 3 stars.)
3. Second chance: Lover Eternal, J.R. Ward (All the same things that drove me batty in Dark Lover came back to haunt me in this one. 3 stars just for the Brothers themselves, but I hate the romance, the antagonists, and the easy-peasy ending.)
4. GoodReads Author: The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks, Josh Lanyon (Loved it! 4.5 stars.)
