Dangerous Heroes!
How dangerous do we let them get?
Sure we let them beat the tar out of the bad guys, (Yea!) but how do you feel about heroes who slap their heroines? Is that something you can accept in a hero? Under certain circumstances? No circumstance? What books have you seen where the hero is abusive to the heroine?

message 455: by Arch (new)

Arch | 4246 comments Mod
No, it's not okay for the hero to put his hand on the heroine. I don't read books where the hero puts his hand on the heroine.

A weak man puts his hand on a woman.

message 456: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) I don't like it when they hit the heroines...that's something I just can't get past.

message 457: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) I just finished reading Insatiable by Meg Cabot and the Hero kept tackling the heroine but the way they did it, it was ok. It never hurt her and it was usually to keep her safe, but the first time was to keep her from running away and that kind of bothered me...is that weird?

message 458: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) Arch I couldn't have said it better myself

No, I don't like heroes who slap/hurt the heroine. I like some edgy stuff, but not that kind of thing. That's my line in the sand, if you will.

I don't mind a hero getting in the heroine face and sweetly threatening her to do something - daring her to object.

Boy that reminds me of Cop.

message 461: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, thanks, everyone, for replying. It's a great subject. I wouldn't like a hero who slapped any woman, especially the heroine. I've heard it done by big-name authors and wondered what their audience felt about it.

Arch, tell me more about Cop.

message 462: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) I can't think of a book where the hero slaps the heroine. Can anyone name any of those books? That way I can take them off my tbr pile if they are on there.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I guess it depends on the context for me. If a hero were trying to get a hysterical heroine to calm down before she hurt herself and slapped her face, I'd be ok with that. Especially if afterward he was apologetic and made it clear he was only trying to get her attention after nothing else worked.

Oh Michelle, Cop is my character. He tends to get in Sanjar's face and sweetly threatens her.

Uniquely Moi,

I can probably understand if the hero done something like that, but not just slap the heroine for no reason.

I don't want to see the heroine hit the hero as well.

Violence is violence.

He's not from a series. He's in the story that I am writing on this group called Trespassing.

message 468: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) Oh I see what you mean now. I'm a little slow today.

message 469: by Nissie Lambert (new)

Nissie Lambert | 104 comments Are we including the spankings we see in the historical romances? Other than that, I've only read one book that I can remember the hero hitting the heroine. And it was a past life kind of thing and he didn't realize what he was doing. Still not okay, but it was easier to handle than someone just being abusive.

I can see that situation, Dhestiny. I can understand if the hero was crazed for some reason (not in his right mind) or he thought the heroine was a threat. But, outside of those circumstances, it's out of my comfort zone.

Personally, I find it annoying when the hero spanks the heroine for discipline. She's not a child.

This is my personal opinion. I am not judging someone who feels differently from me.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I get you, Danielle! I agree... I'm NOT ok with slapping or physical abuse of any kind. I lived it, I don't want to read about it.

message 472: by [deleted user] (new)

Interesting conversation.

message 473: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) Danielle, that is why I almost didn't finish Outlander. It made me so made when he disciplined Clare.

message 474: by Nissie Lambert (new)

Nissie Lambert | 104 comments Can I ask a stupid question that has nothing to do with this topic? What are the Outlander books?

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Nissie, it's a very popular book series Outlander is the first book.

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon

message 476: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) Nessie It's a historical romance series

message 477: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 252 comments For me -- Diana Gabaldon's outlander it's the most awesome Historical/Time Travel Fiction series ever. There are 7 books (to date). The 8th book won't be out for another 1.5 Years.

message 478: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) Wan I have to say once I got over the spanking part I loved the book. I've only read the first 2, but that was rough for me to get past.
