I like half and half. I like cream. Whipping cream, table cream, whole milk.
If I buy milk, say when there is a person growing inside my abdomen and I crave it, I'll go maybe to 2% cause I'm going to ingest a lot of it.

But I'd rather eat toenail clippings than drink skim milk, and don't you f*$@ing dare put skim milk in my coffee or tea.

Soy milk: meh. I rode that train for a while, but the thrill is gone. It tastes too pulpy in general for my taste. But vanilla soymilk is still good on grape nuts.

What do you think about half and half? Gross? Or yes, please, thank you sir?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It's a requirement for coffee drinking, and it can really make a soup spectacular.

But I prefer skim milk in my tea, if any.

I thought of you when I typed that, Jackie. How can you drink it that way? doesn't it just dilute it? What kind of tea are we talking?

message 4: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
What is carrageenan, anyway?

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Oh. Must.Have. 1/2 and 1/2 with my cawfee. See Minor Tragedies for more info!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I hate carageenan. It's thickener made from algae, Sally.

I prefer skim milk in my tea, because anything heavier overpowers the tea flavor.

message 7: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Gar-oss! I don't want algae in my tea.

message 8: by Lori (new)

Lori Algae? eeeeeew, I thought it was from beans! Not that I want that either on my pumpkin pie.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Okay, I double-checked. Carraggeenan is made from seaweed. Guar gum is made from beans.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I just don't like it. :P

message 11: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Love cream of all kinds. One of my favorite drinks when I was managing the coffee shop was a Dopiatto - 3 shots with sweetened heavy cream on top. Oh, so sinfully delicious! For coffee or bakery items & desserts, there is no substitute.

But, if it's milk form I'll do skim or 1%. Lately I've been drinking coconut milk instead - not the kind you use in Thai food, but an actual milk made from coconuts in that mysterious way they take a food and make it into another food. Grocery Magic!

message 12: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Well, I only mean sinful in the most indulgent and lovingly way. ;)

message 13: by Lori (new)

Lori Well, I should turn you onto Chocolate Sin, a recipe I have for flourless cake. Hopefully that will re-educate you on the better usage of sin when it comes to food.

message 14: by Lori (new)

Lori Why of course!

message 15: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I love food, too, Bunwat, and I say anything in moderation is OK. My ex-husband was a horrible, horrible control freak about food and obssessed with physical fitness. I won't go into details about exactly how horrible it was but needless to say the first time I went to the grocery store and bought a pint of chocolate ice cream and realized I didn't have to hide it from him or feel guilty for eating it was one of the most beautiful moments in my life.

message 16: by Lori (new)

Lori Ahhhhhh. I can feel that through your post.

Now I have to hide my ice cream for a different reason - for protection.

message 17: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jan 29, 2010 02:31AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I like whipped cream. I will open the fridge and take out the spray can, if we have it, and shoot the whipped cream directly into my mouth. Or snag it from the container with my finger, if we have that kind, so little finger trails are across the surface.

And I only drink skim milk, but I'm not pregnant.

And I still don't get putting stuff in tea/coffee, but I'll get it a shot sometime. Oh, sometimes I put honey in tea. But half in half? The work of the devil, of course.

I have never heard of carraggeenan. Substances of that nature are often illegal in Wisconsin:)

No, did we talk about how the butter producers here freaked out when margarine was invented and tried to get it outlawed? I think Jackie mentioned it once...

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

My brother in laws parents used to drive to Illinois to pick up margarine, and bring it into the state. It wasn't sold here for awhile.

I think I love you, Bun. I can very much relate to this- I have had so many friends who talk the same way as your family. Also, your post made me really hungry. I've had a stomach bug for the last couple of days and haven't been able to eat anything but toast, white rice, plain potatoes or chicken broth. I'm ready for some real food.

I'm on Team "No cream or milk in tea." Coffee, yes, but not in tea. It takes away from the flavor of the tea.

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori That's a great story about the butter war! I have never used margarine, if I want butter I'm gonna go for the real thing. A baguette with margarine? Blech.

message 21: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i use margarine, but never combined with meat or cheese or anything that's sticky enough to stay on the bread on its own, because that's just gross. same goes for butter. the only occasion i use a lot of it: with extra dark chocolate sprinkles on white bread.

message 22: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
RA, I think that if you like whipped cream from a can you like caraceegeenan.

message 23: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Margarine makes me twitch. Sweeter used to buy it when we first moved in together - this weirdly false advertising "yogurt spread" thing that is nothing but corn products when you look at the label.

message 24: by Catalina (new)

Catalina | 268 comments I use whipping cream in my oatmeal.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I see no point to margarine.

Mom says when margarine first came out, it came in plastic bags, with a separate packet of coloring. You squirted the coloring into the mass of white fat, and squished it around to make it look like butter.

I think that was because she lived in Wisconsin at the time, where the dairy farmers didn't want an attractive alternative to butter in the stores.

OH god. He sounds like my Aunt Sue's crazy husband. She was required to roast a turkey breast for him once a week with no spices or additional brines/oils. She then had to slice it and serve it to him for lunch over the course of the coming week. There was also portion-control in freakish amounts, but already I am getting a headache, so honey I do sympathize. Yikes.

message 28: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie I love half and half, it just makes my latte taste so much better. I do mix it with my 2 percent though so it's not as fattening. You're right about skim milk I personally think it tastes like water.

message 29: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments When I was a kid, I loooved to drink half and half straight out of the little cups. I'd drink all of the ones on the table. It'd gross my parents out. I still do that on occasion if there's any on the table in a restaurant. It still grosses people out. I still love it.

message 30: by Dario (new)

Dario | 63 comments half 'n half=nectar of the gods
other stuff=juice of the devil

seriously it goes good with everything cereal, ice cream, coffee, soup, the list goes on

message 31: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I love half & half poured over a steaming hot brownie or peach cobbler. The dessert is still so hot it will burn your mouth but the h&h cools it just in time so you get all the flavors combining to bliss in your mouth. Yum!

I hate skim milk. In theory I like half 'n half and cream, but honestly in my coffee I prefer nondairy creamer. There's something about a real dairy product in coffee that ruins it for me.

I love half&half too Heidi. And I still like to drink it out of the little cups. We were at a wedding reception once and it was winding down and all the others at our table were gone so I drank all the cream from the little steel container thingy. One of the waiters came over to me and said "we have more" *blushes*

I like half & half in my tea, coffee, hot cocoa, cereal...

Barb, I love whipped cream, and Cool Whip, etc. I'll make my hot cocoa with half&half and top it with whipped cream. Hubby hates cream so he'll scrape his off and give it to me. I have no problems with that. Munchkin has my tastes in chocolate, cream, frosting...

message 36: by Dario (new)

Dario | 63 comments I feel that Cream, Whipped cream, and Half n' Half are all the best and I prefer them whenever possible. My hot cocoa has all three coincidentally.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I have a sweet tooth. Hopefully there is some form of pastry or baked goods to add onto my tab.

My husband made chili today and it smells delicious but I really just want a chocolate croissant right now. No, I'm not pregnant.

I know, I'm disgusting. :hangs head in shame:

I buy a lot of half-and-half, but I've never had any.

I had completely forgotten about that! That was the kids' job. It was fun to squeeze the bag until the colour was all mixed in.
