Short Story: UK and Commonwealth 1000 - 12,000 words
Novelette (General Fiction): 7,500--15,000 words
Novelette (SF & Fantasy): 7,500--17,500 words
Novella (General Fiction): 15,000--30,000 words
Novella (SF & Fantasy): 17,500--40,000 words
Novel (General Fiction): Over 30,000 words
Novel (SF & Fantasy): Over 40,000 words


Of note, the 'inventor' of the American Short Story, Edgar Alan Poe, described a SS as "that which can be read in an afternoon", presumably at leisure.
OT; I once read that many settlers brought two books west with them. The Bible and Shakespeare's works. How cool is that?
As I am still trying to find the right nomencalture and positioning for these stories, I am curious to hear if you guys would qualify these as short stories or novellas or - the way I do it - as dime novels.
