Bookbrow | 2 comments There are 3 books of alternative fiction that I have really enjoyed, they are almost classics of the genre. Bring the jubilee by Ward Moore, the setting is that the south has won the civil war and then north is an economic backwater as of result. Pavane by Keith Roberts which has the interesting premise that the church in England carefully controls technology and Lest Darkness falls about a modern man going back into Roman times and changing events.

Do you know if there is book starting with the premise that the central powers win world war I in the first 90 days?

Sorry as much as I like alt history I am fairly new to the genre and I joined this group with intentions to expand my library, so I don't know of a book that you are looking for. Good luck.

Josh Bowen | 2 comments The only WWI alt history book that i am familiar with is the second crosstime traffic book "Curious Notions", but its set over a century after WWI, gives only brief bits of info about what happened and generally leaves alot to be desired as does most of the crosstime series. Curious Notions (Crosstime Traffic, #2) by Harry Turtledove There is also a chapter in "What Might Have Been" about Archduke Ferdinand surviving Sarajevo. What Might Have Been Imaginary History from Twelve Leading Historians (Phoenix Paperback Series) by Andrew Roberts Unfortunatley like in many genre WWI is poorly represented in Alt History.

Paul | 3 comments I've enjoyed Pavane and have read it a couple of times. I'm not familiar with the other two you mentioned.

For myself I'd add The Two Georges by Richard Dreyfuss and Harry Turtledove, and any of H. Beam Piper's Paratime stories, the most well known of which is Gunpowder God.

I'm also a fan of the Martin Greenberg, Gregory Benford anthologies What Might Have been.

Gweeptish | 4 comments Lest Darkness Fall by L. Sprague de Camp, in my opinion, is a must read

message 7: by Robert (new)

Robert Taylor | 1 comments Them Bones, by Howard Waldrop - follows three distinct timelines as they change each other. It's the masterpiece of an endlessly inventive writer

message 8: by Grey (new)

Grey Wolf | 4 comments I like slightly more offbeat books as my favourite three, tho purists would say they aren't PURE alternate history

Elleander Morning by Jerry Yulsman
Napoleon Disentimed by Hayford Peirce
There Are Doors by Gene Wolfe

Grey Wolf

I read on the Baen books website that Robert Conroy has written a book around the premise that Germany won World War I, conquerored Britain and ruled Europe. In 1920 she decides to invade the USA. This book is out later this year.

Although I am a real enthusiast of AH, perhaps the most convincing has been C.J. Samson's 'Dominion':

Mainly due to the correct understanding of the complexities of 1930s Britain...
