Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments Paris Trout by Pete Dexter

This is a really disturbing story but it's great.

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert

Not the most complex book, very chatty style; if you look at it as a self-help sort of book, it's pretty good as far those things go.

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments The Shipping News by Annie Proulx

Very slow, measured style.

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon

Lovely; it's very well-written, creative, and interesting - very clever prose version of comic book style (moments can be dilated over pages and huge events can happen in an instant).

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

This book reads like a screenplay; or a really long book report about a movie.

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer

Very good portrait(s) of a criminal and a rural community.

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments Gastronaut Adventures in Food for the Romantic, the Foolhardy, and the Brave by Stefan Gates

A bit odd in a British sort of way; I wanted it to be better, but there were some interesting recipes and music suggestions.

message 16: by Alarice (new)

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments Fist Stick Knife Gun by Geoffrey Canada

Mildly interesting, but I don't think I learned anything from this book.

I couldn't agree more! I've got a few things on my to-read list that have gotten strong reviews from you (the book thief in particular). Thanks for the reviews.

Rose (obsessedreader9) | 215 comments One of my book clubs recently read Little Bee; everyone panned it except my sister. I had bought the book (I really had high hopes), but donated it yesterday to the library.

message 35: by Alarice (new)

Alarice Hansberry | 55 comments I am reading Tears of the Desert now, it is better, probably because it's a memoir, so even when it is a bit blunt it rings a little more true than Little Bee (ugh). But What is the What is the best book here about Africa.

message 36: by Rose (new)

Rose (obsessedreader9) | 215 comments One of the book clubs I'm in read three books about the Lost Boys. You're right--those stories are gripping (and tragically true).

message 39: by Alarice (last edited Aug 19, 2010 09:08PM) (new)
