Nomad I usually read 2 to 3 books at the same time, so right now I'm reading 'The Earth Moved' by Amy Stewart, which is about... earthworms. And believe it or not, it's really interesting.

I'm also reading 'A Discovery of Witches', as per the buddy read I'm doing. I just started it tonight, but what little I've read, I've enjoyed thus far.

I had an earthworm on the sill of my bedroom window. I guess the rain had blown it inside. I relocated it outside to the grass. Earthworms do a lot for the soil. I like them, if one can like earthworms...

Nomad I just finished 'Call of Cuthulhu' by H.P. Lovecraft.

He was such a racist a$$hole that having to write a review of what COULD have been a fabulous story and was instead a...bleep, bleep, bleepity bleep... hurts me in my happy place.

My happy place is a chococlate cookbook. Me and the cookbook have been made to weep because Lovecraft is a douchnozzle!

HPL was not only racist, but socially elitist as well. He writes country folks as inbred, genetically inferior idiots. Although he was antisemitic, he actually married a Jewish woman.

I know a lot of folks love him, but I find him very melodramatic. I like some of his work, but I agree with you that his racism is very hard to deal with.

Duchess Nicole | 154 comments I just finished Big Bad Beast (Pride, #6) by Shelly Laurenston . It was good, but I liked the earlier ones better, and Magnus pack even better than the Pride series. I also just finished listening to Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine , which was pretty good. Ended on a major cliffhanger and was a bit too YA for me, but I expected that.

I liked it! Usually the first is my least favorite, so I'll keep going with the series. Does the girl grow up any, or is she this young throughout?

message 5095: by ~Megan~ (new)

~Megan~ (megadee) | 1084 comments Mod
Ummm, she continues to grow up, but is roughly near the same age. I think she turned 18 in the last book I read. I'm a couple books behind. She is extremely mature after a lot of things she goes through. She also gets into a very committed relationship (I won't tell you with who, but they are one of my fave couples), and that helps a lot with making her seem older.

message 5096: by Duchess Nicole (new)

Duchess Nicole | 154 comments Great! I like staying with the same people throughout a series. I think I just said this in another thread, LOL! I AM curious about who she ends up with romantically. I really like both Shane and Michael, but I'm assuming that there are more characters introduced. I'm waiting for the second book to become available, so I'll get to it soon. Thanks for the info!

message 5099: by Nomad (new)

Nomad Lady D- Your comment in another thread about liking genteel, somewhat Victorian themed horror had me thinking. So I decided to either read, or reread the horror classics. 'Call of Cuthulhu' is pretty classic in the genre, so I bought it for 99 cents for my nook.

I'm from Rhode Island, though I now live in San Diego, and all through my teen years I lived 3 doors down from the house he used to live in. Let me tell you, I had to deal with more than my share of crazy from his fans. And it colored my picture of him even before I deemed to read the book.

When you have to tell people no, who ask you if you can hear the "Old Gods", because they don't get that HPL wrote FICTION, it can make you pretty anti-HPL without even reading anything he ever wrote.

He was an anti-Semite who married a Jew? That's so unbelievably schizophrenic I have no words for it. I'm not surprised he was an anti-Semite, most people were in his day and age, but most of them didn't then turn around and marry a Jewish woman.

You gave me some interesting trivia to talk about at the next gathering after syngagoue services.
