(All the books were either purchased by me to giveaway or donated by the author with permission to give away!)

Smashwords has the Kindle format for download and there are tons of free books available there.
Another site worth checking out is http://online-novels.blogspot.com/2008/12/introduction.html. I saw quite a few books listed free there that I paid for (and enjoyed) not all that long ago. A lot of publishers and authors are using a free download as a promotion.
Four of my novels are discounted and one is free this week! You can find them all on my Smashwords page. (The discounts do not show up on the authors' pages. When you click on the book title, you will see the discount offered.)
It's a great event for anyone with an eReader of any sort. Most of the participating sites offer a variety of download options. With Smashwords, you can download for any type of reader or computer. You can find a list of all the participating sites, authors, and publishers at http://ebookweek.com.
Happy Shopping!
