message 507: by Eva (new)

Eva Moon (evamoon) | 5 comments I fell in love with Magical Realism years ago when I read "100 Years of Solitude" and it's the genre I write in now. I also love reimagined tellings of beloved stories and characters and books based on minor characters no one thought to give a life to. I've written mostly plays and screenplays up to now, but my first novel - a historical adventure with a generous dusting of magic - is in final edits. I looked through the topics here and I'm a bit overwhelmed at how much there is to read!

And welcome to the group! It can be overwhelming, but we're a friendly bunch. You're welcome to comment on old threads; they never close.

Kenny Miller | 2 comments Hello folks, my name is Ken and I’m happy to become a member of this group. I’ve been a fantasy/science fiction reader for more than fifty years ( yes that makes me an old guy). I’ve read broadly in the field and if pushed I would probably say that fantasy writing is my favorite (I’ve reread “The Lord of the Rings” every year for more than twenty years). I looked forward to broadening my scope based on recommendations and discussions from you folks. Thanks for the opportunity.

Beth O’Halloran Hello everyone! My name is Bethany. I am 26 and I live in Canada.

I love fairytales and mythologies. My favourites are Irish myths and legends and Arthurian mythology. I grew up reading those stories with my Mother as she is Irish and I was raised in England.

My favourite book genre is fantasy and has been ever since I was a child when I watched The Lord of the Rings and read The Chronicles of Narnia. My favourite book is The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon.

Nice to meet you all! :)

A belated hello and welcome to Jo!
I've had my head down in proofreading manuscripts for several months and got way behind on Goodreads meet-ups.
I read anything fairytale, too, including retellings, including snarky or funny ones and historical ones. (I'm also in the Fairy Tale Retellings group, and I think you'd enjoy the discussions there, too.)

Hello, and a belated welcome to you, Ken. I was buried in proofreading projects for several months, and fell behind on Goodreads conversations and challenges.
I enjoy classic fantasies and sci fi (among many other genres both literary and popular).

Nilanjana Haldar Hello there everyone! I am Nilanjana and I am new to this group. I love fantasy and magical realism stories hugely. I loved how active this group is. Could someone please guide me a little as to how I must go about using this group?

It would benefit me a lot?

Do you guys do group readings on any book? If yes, could you please share some examples with me?

I would love to know! : )

Welcome to this group Nilanjara! You will definitely discover many new books here, as well as being able to read about and discuss the ones you love!
All our

I would suggest browsing around. All our threads stay open, so you can leave comments even if it is an old thread. Many older discussions have been brought back to life that way!
We no longer have group reads every 2 months, however if there is a particular book you wish to discuss you can go to the group reads folder and ask if anyone wants to read it with you. You just need one other person to do a “buddy read” and you can set up your own thread.
We have yearly challenges. This year it a “Around the World” one.
Basically we are a pretty laid back group and don’t have many rules except to be kind and courteous!

It can literally be whatever you are reading and does not have to be fairy or folklore or mythology related

message 547: by Barry (new)

Barry (bobsywoo) | 12 comments Hello, my name is Barry and I am fascinated by fairy tales and follklore. Where I live has a rich tradition of fairies, ghosts, witches and legends that go back centuries. One of the most fun things I can do, is go for a walk in the woods behind my home and no matter the season I learn something new. Sadly house building year on year encroaches on these private, quiet spaces but the woods still hold some magic!

I've tried my hand at writing collaborative fiction with friends focussing on old stories and legends. I'm not bothered if they are 'real' or not - they become part of our histories when we share a tale or pass something on.

In terms of reading, I do pick up anything and everything but I have read a few things recently that touch on mythologies and legends other than from my own culture. I also usually have too many reading challenges on the go, but I do want to undertake a 'fairy tale / mythology / tales of old witchcraft / folk realism' challenge so I have joined this group for a little inspiration and a little motivation.
