Hi! I'm Michelle. I'm new to Goodreads and thrilled to find so many others with the same love that I have for myths, folklore and fairytales!
I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons with your monthly picks and some lively discussions.
Thanks for being here :-)

I have set myself a "tale of the month" project and have selected Peter Pan for December, 2012. All of 2013 will be Grimm fairy tales, although I haven't specified the stories for each month. I am collecting retellings for Rapunzel right now.
Nice to meet everyone.

Any recommendations for adult (non YA, need a small break), dark retellings or reimaginings would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the group, Ceilidh! There's plenty of recs we can give around here.
One of our current group reads (The Child Thief) ) is supposed to be quite dark, and I don't believe it was intended as a YA book.
Our other group read is The Snow Child. I'm not certain how dark it is, but it is also for adults.

Thanks so much Melanti, I've had The Snow Child on my tbr list for a while, but hadn't heard of The Child Thief. Looks good, can't wait to check it out!

I've since started watching Once Upon A Time & Finding Bigfoot with my two kids-- which further piqued my interest in re-tellings/legends/ folklore. I'm looking for suggestions, not necessarily YA, on where to start! So glad to have found this group - I can't figure out how to get to a group list, but that may be because I primarily use the mobile app... :)
Welcome, Sandy.
We do have a group bookshelf but I don't believe you can access it from the Android App. (I've no clue about an Apple App.)
Otherwise, feel free to just browse around and chat! We talk about a lot of different books, TV shows, and movies in the forums. We even have a thread for the "Once Upon a Time" show.

I am late doing this but welcome Debey and Sandy! Don't forget to check out our group reads and feel free to comment!

I have loved fairy tales since childhood, but I became really interested in fairy tale retellings when I was studying the topic at the University of Cape Town. We looked at everything from how/why Disney utilised fairy tales in their films to feminist fairy tale retellings.
I'm so glad I found this reading group and look really forward to seeing your reading suggestions. Glancing at your bookshelf, there is so much I haven't come across before. I'm in for a treat!

Welcome Anne, Bobbie and Jenniffer!
You will discover great books here! My best reads this year were books from this group. Please feel free to join our discussions and comment on all the threads, even the older ones!

Welcome Jodi, as I already mentioned you can list your books in our authors folder. Also check out our bookshelf and browse through all our discussions. Feel free to comment on any of the topics or start up your own!

Love the fantasy elements as they play out as 'memes' in our real world, especially myths and fairy tales. (I teach a class that uses many examples.) I am also the author of a non-fiction book on this subject, and have a website with additional articles you might enjoy. Just started a Twitter account @TogaWisdom (lots to learn).
Note to Mods: If this is not the place to list the following info, please move to appropriate folder. The Author folder looked like it was to discuss only select author(s).
Other than lurking in this group (and participating in more discussions with all of you) you can find me here:

Welcome Monica!
It is fine to tell us about your work, especially as it pertains to subject matter that interests all of us. Your class sounds fascinating! I'd love to attend! Where do you teach?

My name is Julia and I joined this board tonight though I've been on Goodreads for quite awhile. I live in Upstate New York between the Catskills and the Adirondacks.
Two weeks ago I was very fortunate to be able to see, hear Neil Gaiman at a signing/ interview/ q & a/ reading for The Ocean at the End of the Lane. If he is coming near where you live on this tour, and you can swing it, please don't miss him! (I also just reread his Smoke and Mirrors.)
Before that I read the newish and very good collection Under My Hat: Tales from the Cauldron.
Some of my favorite writers are: Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen,Holly Black, Ellen Kushner, Ellen Datlow, Terri Windling, Delia Sherman, Jim Butcher, Donna Napoli, Shannon Hale.
Welcome Julia!
It is great to have you here! You will love the kind of books we read!
I also especially love Charles De Lint, Terri Windling and Holly Black, but have yet to discover some of the others.
In July we will be reading Hood and Ruby Red. I hope you'll join us! Thanks for the tip on the new Neil Gaiman book! I will check it out. I loved Neverwhere and Stardust.

As for Hood, I've never read Stephen R. Lawhead, so hopefully I'll get around to it.

My name is Dayna and I've been an avid reader since I was a young girl 10 years old and today I'm a 43 year old new Mommy and my favorite genre of reading is fantasy escape paranormal or Faerie or Wicca young adult novel? I love reading any fiction about revering and loving and Honoring Mother Nature, Mother Earth, the Unseen Elementals, and the beautiful animals and I prefer young adult because I prefer to read fiction that is tame and gentle and easy to read. I'm also an organic green living author writer and I'm promoting my work in other groups on goodreads. Can anyone recommend a great one to read in this genre category? I really need a great escape light reading, something that will help to relax and comfort and soothe me and help me relax to sleep and help me de-stress and escape the stressful daily life woes. ty <3
Welcome Dayna. Are you asking for a YA recommendation? I'm not quite sure what you mean by this genre category because you listed a few.

Welcome Danya! You will discover great books in this group!
As it says in our intro, we are " a group to discuss fairy tales, myths, legends, and monsters, either in their original form or in the massive amount of retellings.", so many of the books we read are YA. I suggest looking at our bookshelf and previous group reads as well as checking out the Endicott Mythic YA list. We also have a Goodreads author promotion folder.
I look forward to your participation!

I'm a retired English teacher who is mourning the loss of Seamus Heaney. His Beowulf: A New Verse Translation is one of my favorites.
I am still a huge Harry Potter fan, along with my grandchildren; I also enjoy the Rick Riordan books, The Kane Chronicles.
Neil Gaiman's American Gods is one of the tops on my list, and I love his new The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Great to know the other Julia saw him on tour :-) One of my former theater students is a member of this group, and got his permission to create a production of Snow, Glass, Apples, so she received a hug as he signed her copy of OCEAN. Hi to Lisa!
I look forward to this group, and I'm excited that Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride is the next choice.
Thanks for keeping magic alive on goodreads :-)

Welcome, Julia!
I, too, was sad when I heard about Seamus Heaney. I think I still have his translation of Beowulf floating around somewhere.

I've also just discovered Jack Zipes. I've just finished reading The Irresistible Fairy Tale and have just started reading his The Great Fairy Tale Tradition. I would love book recommendations for either more books by Zipes or books in a similar vein.

I haven't read the Mercedes Lackey series. If you like retellings, the collections edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling are a good place to start. They also include reading lists.
Deb, without knowing more of your reading tastes, it's hard to recommend a particular author or series.
What kinds of books do you like to read? Mysteries? Romance? Historical fiction?
I really liked Lackey when I was younger. She's a very lightweight romance type writer.
The set of collections that Chris mentioned (found here) is very good and has a little of everything.
