Emily | 8 comments Shooting off a quick introduction before work! Hi! I'm Emily, but go by gildedwaffle on Goodreads. I've been a fan of fairy tales, folklore, and all that fun stuff since the age of four, when I would spend weekends at my grandfather's reading from my mom's old "Young Years" book. Currently, I'm one of the many job hunters out there/part-time librarian. My current fairy tale love is the "Fables" graphic novel series.

Hi! I'm Michelle. I'm new to Goodreads and thrilled to find so many others with the same love that I have for myths, folklore and fairytales!

I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons with your monthly picks and some lively discussions.

Hi Michelle. Thanks for joining the group.

message 157: by Christine PNW (new)

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) I wanted to say hi to everyone. I am a huge fan of mythology and fairy tales and have recently started a blog about fairy tales, retellings, & fantasy books. I love the Arthurian myth and have read a lot of Arthur books, & I am a huge fan of Grimm and a lot of the modern retellings.

You can find my blog here -

http://theglassmountains.wordpress.com/

I have set myself a "tale of the month" project and have selected Peter Pan for December, 2012. All of 2013 will be Grimm fairy tales, although I haven't specified the stories for each month. I am collecting retellings for Rapunzel right now.

Nice to meet everyone.

T.C. McMullen | 1 comments Hi all, I'm T.C., a fantasy artist and author, mother of three. I started into mythology a few years ago and loved how it fed some cultures for my characters. Now I read mythology as often as I can. There is so much to take in from this group. Loving it already.

Ceilidh (ceilidh96) | 2 comments Hi all, just found this group while I was searching GR for really good, dark fairy tale retellings (or as autocorrect would like me to say "rebel longs," really, is that a thing?). Looking forward to exploring more and getting to know y'all!

Any recommendations for adult (non YA, need a small break), dark retellings or reimaginings would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the group, Ceilidh! There's plenty of recs we can give around here.

One of our current group reads (The Child Thief) ) is supposed to be quite dark, and I don't believe it was intended as a YA book.

Our other group read is The Snow Child. I'm not certain how dark it is, but it is also for adults.

Thanks so much Melanti, I've had The Snow Child on my tbr list for a while, but hadn't heard of The Child Thief. Looks good, can't wait to check it out!

message 163: by Debey (new)

Debey Sklenar (dsklenar) | 1 comments Hello! I'm Debey. Very new to Goodreads and ebooks in general. I have written a trilogy of fairy tales, but also love to read (and watch) them. Hoping to see good reading ideas in this group!!!

message 164: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 2 comments Hi! I'm Sandy, new to the group. One of my favorite books growing up was The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper which integrated Arturian legends into the series. I became interested in fairy tale re-tellings when my child had to read a couple for the local battle of the books contest.
I've since started watching Once Upon A Time & Finding Bigfoot with my two kids-- which further piqued my interest in re-tellings/legends/ folklore. I'm looking for suggestions, not necessarily YA, on where to start! So glad to have found this group - I can't figure out how to get to a group list, but that may be because I primarily use the mobile app... :)

Welcome, Sandy.
We do have a group bookshelf but I don't believe you can access it from the Android App. (I've no clue about an Apple App.)

Otherwise, feel free to just browse around and chat! We talk about a lot of different books, TV shows, and movies in the forums. We even have a thread for the "Once Upon a Time" show.

message 168: by Anne (new)

Anne (annelouisetaylor) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Anne and I'm from South Africa.

I have loved fairy tales since childhood, but I became really interested in fairy tale retellings when I was studying the topic at the University of Cape Town. We looked at everything from how/why Disney utilised fairy tales in their films to feminist fairy tale retellings.

I'm so glad I found this reading group and look really forward to seeing your reading suggestions. Glancing at your bookshelf, there is so much I haven't come across before. I'm in for a treat!

message 169: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi (bobbichukran) Hi all! My name is Bobbi and I'm an author and playwright who specializes in quirky comedy adaptations of classic stories--mostly fairy tales so far. So glad to find this group here! So far I've done plays inspired by Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Wizard of Oz--and my newest book, PRINCESS PRIMROSE and the CURSE OF THE BIG SLEEP (published just last week!) is a quirky mash-up of at least four classic tales, with Rapunzel and Snow White as Inquiry Agents (detectives). Happy trails from Texas! bobbi c.

message 170: by Jenniffer (new)

Jenniffer Wardell | 11 comments Hi! My name is Jenniffer (yes, I'm the one who stole the extra letters) and I've been obsessed with fairy tales pretty much my whole life. I love them so much I even started writing about them when I became a novelist (Fairy Godmothers, Inc., my first novel, recently came out) and am always looking for more adaptational goodness. I usually prefer stories with a more comedic touch, but the darker stuff can be fun as well.

Jodi Woody (jodiwoody) Hi all, I am Jodi Woody and grew up with fairytales. Now that I am an adult, I love retellings, including my own. Don't mind some of the edgy ones, but prefer them not too dark, I still insist on the happy ending.

message 179: by Monica (new)

Monica Davis Hi Everyone! I've been a "quiet" member of this group for several months while reading your posts. Thought I had introduced myself when I first joined, but find that I did not...oops!

Love the fantasy elements as they play out as 'memes' in our real world, especially myths and fairy tales. (I teach a class that uses many examples.) I am also the author of a non-fiction book on this subject, and have a website with additional articles you might enjoy. Just started a Twitter account @TogaWisdom (lots to learn).

Note to Mods: If this is not the place to list the following info, please move to appropriate folder. The Author folder looked like it was to discuss only select author(s).

Other than lurking in this group (and participating in more discussions with all of you) you can find me here:

Molly Ringle (molly_ringle) | 27 comments Hi all! I'm Molly, and since I'm in the midst of writing novels based on Greek myths (starting with Persephone's Orchard ) , I am quite enamored of the Greco-Roman family of magical stories. However, at the moment I'm also re-reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (so I can imagine who the BBC should cast and be annoyed at them when they choose someone different), and would count Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series among my favorite books. And someday I want to learn more about other mythologies of the world and explore those stories too. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome Molly!

Your book looks very intriguing!

We not only read classic European Fairytales in this group, but tales and Mythology from all around the world,Fantasy,as well as "realistic" novels with Mythic elements.

Have a look around and feel free to comment on any of the posts as well as start up a new topic.

You can put your book in our Authors folder.

This July and August the books chosen for our group read discussion will be
Hood by Stephen R. Lawhead, and. Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier, so I look forward to seeing you around!

Julia | 215 comments Hi,

My name is Julia and I joined this board tonight though I've been on Goodreads for quite awhile. I live in Upstate New York between the Catskills and the Adirondacks.
Two weeks ago I was very fortunate to be able to see, hear Neil Gaiman at a signing/ interview/ q & a/ reading for The Ocean at the End of the Lane. If he is coming near where you live on this tour, and you can swing it, please don't miss him! (I also just reread his Smoke and Mirrors.)
Before that I read the newish and very good collection Under My Hat: Tales from the Cauldron.

Some of my favorite writers are: Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen,Holly Black, Ellen Kushner, Ellen Datlow, Terri Windling, Delia Sherman, Jim Butcher, Donna Napoli, Shannon Hale.

In July we will be reading Hood and Ruby Red. I hope you'll join us! Thanks for the tip on the new Neil Gaiman book! I will check it out. I loved Neverwhere and Stardust.

Julia | 215 comments Thanks Chris and Jalilah. (I came here at your invitation, Jalilah, we are some other topics on gr together.)
As for Hood, I've never read Stephen R. Lawhead, so hopefully I'll get around to it.

Dayna Colvin (earthwriter) | 2 comments Hello,
My name is Dayna and I've been an avid reader since I was a young girl 10 years old and today I'm a 43 year old new Mommy and my favorite genre of reading is fantasy escape paranormal or Faerie or Wicca young adult novel? I love reading any fiction about revering and loving and Honoring Mother Nature, Mother Earth, the Unseen Elementals, and the beautiful animals and I prefer young adult because I prefer to read fiction that is tame and gentle and easy to read. I'm also an organic green living author writer and I'm promoting my work in other groups on goodreads. Can anyone recommend a great one to read in this genre category? I really need a great escape light reading, something that will help to relax and comfort and soothe me and help me relax to sleep and help me de-stress and escape the stressful daily life woes. ty <3

Welcome Danya! You will discover great books in this group!
As it says in our intro, we are " a group to discuss fairy tales, myths, legends, and monsters, either in their original form or in the massive amount of retellings.", so many of the books we read are YA. I suggest looking at our bookshelf and previous group reads as well as checking out the Endicott Mythic YA list. We also have a Goodreads author promotion folder.
I look forward to your participation!

Julia (juliastrimer) I see another Julia here :-) I just found this group as well, since I finished The Book of Lost Things and wanted to stay in the world of magic.

I'm a retired English teacher who is mourning the loss of Seamus Heaney. His Beowulf: A New Verse Translation is one of my favorites.

I am still a huge Harry Potter fan, along with my grandchildren; I also enjoy the Rick Riordan books, The Kane Chronicles.

Neil Gaiman's American Gods is one of the tops on my list, and I love his new The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Great to know the other Julia saw him on tour :-) One of my former theater students is a member of this group, and got his permission to create a production of Snow, Glass, Apples, so she received a hug as he signed her copy of OCEAN. Hi to Lisa!

I look forward to this group, and I'm excited that Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride is the next choice.

Thanks for keeping magic alive on goodreads :-)

I haven't read the Mercedes Lackey series. If you like retellings, the collections edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling are a good place to start. They also include reading lists.

Deb, without knowing more of your reading tastes, it's hard to recommend a particular author or series.

What kinds of books do you like to read? Mysteries? Romance? Historical fiction?

I really liked Lackey when I was younger. She's a very lightweight romance type writer.

The set of collections that Chris mentioned (found here) is very good and has a little of everything.
