My name is Catherine, and I'm an elementary teacher that is fairly new to the career. Last year, I decided that I wasn't very familiar with children's literature and decided to start reading. I started off with Dr. Seuss and Robert Munch books and then I just started reading everything I could get my hands on. By early Dec. I knew I could reach 1000 books by years end (over 95% being picture books). This year I've decided to go up a little bit in age range and am starting to read some young adult novels.
I started poking around on the website and found your group and thought this might be a great way to find some good stories. I have signed up for the 2014 challenge and I'm well on my way to completing another exciting year of reading!
Welcome Catherine! Yes, it is amazing all the good children's literature there is out there! I discovered a lot of new books with my son.

I'm Lidija (Lydia would be equivalent in English) and i am pretty new on Goodreads. I live in Croatia (Europe) and love to read all sorts of books, especially fantasy, dairy tales, sci-fi, crime, historical fiction, adventure, etc.

As far as fairy tales go, I have been sucked into the genre by way of Tolkien. For my early English lit class, I have just finished reading his translation of Sir Orfeo and fallen even more in love with classic fairy tales.
Welcome, Barbara. No tattoos here - book inspired or otherwise.

I'm sure there're books somewhere involving cows jumping over moons!

Barbara, I totally feel you on the fantasy ink. I do not have any as of yet but I am figuring out how I want mine done of my interpretation of Trees of Valinor. I also want to get the JRRT character that is found on all his books.

My name is Catie. Long-time lurker, first time poster on Goodreads. I have absolutely loved this website since I was first introduced, and still have so much to play around with and discover.
I thought this would be a great group for me to join as I have always loved fairy tales, and I look forward to the new things the group may introduce me to.

Lidija, I was going to ask this and then I googled dairy tales in case there was such a thing, and found a few, lol.
Loved this one:
A Dairy Tale: The Three Little Pigs

It's a fairytale retelling and was hilliarious.
You realize there are no mistakes in the universe. :)
Welcome Cattie and Saynt.

Is this like a super-secret handshake type thing? What JRRT character?

I'm down for any book recommendations, though I'm not big on romance or retellings.
Welcome to the group Catie, Saynt and Chelsea!
You will definitely discover some great books here!

I'm Elsbeth. I live in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. And I love reading...
Almost everything: thrillers, classics, historical novels, myths and legends and I'm discovering so many other books through Goodreads! That's so great!
Have fun reading, everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good retellings that were romantic, but not too sexual? I've been looking lately, and the retellings are either lacking in the romance area or a little too hot for me to handle. Lol
Also, feel free to friend me if you want, I need more friend who love fairy tales in my Goodreads life! Thanks! :)

Welcome to our group Cookie! We all love Fairy Tales here! You will discover lots of good books by browsing around here. There are lots of interesting discussions.
Feel free to comment, even on some of the older threads. We also have a book shelf.
If you love Beauty and the Beast, you might like Beauty. There is never any graphic sex in Robin McKinley's books, but there is usually a bit of romance. Other good B&B retellings are Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier and A Beastly Scandal by Shereen Vedam.

Thank you so much! I'll check those books out and browse the shelve. Looking forward to finding some great books! :)
Welcome, Cookie!
If you're specifically wanting romances, you might possibly like some of Cameron Dokey's retellings. They're much too focused on the romance for my tastes but if that's what you want, you might give one a try.
Or perhaps try Mercedes Lackey's Elemental Masters series?
These are both wild guesses! We don't have all that many books in common, and some of what we have both read, we've disagreed on so it's kind of hard to suggest something - but at the very least, both are YA/NA-friendly, fairy tale romances, so hopefully they're somewhere close.
(By the way, I spotted To Say Nothing of the Dog on your bookshelf... It's very funny AND a romance. Don't feel you need to read Doomsday Book first.)

Thank you again for your great recommendations. It really helped me to get a good starting place for my fairy tale retelling collection. :)

Today, I clear the calendar for Once Upon a Time, Sleepy Hollow, and Grimm. I read a lot of fantasy and thrillers. I have been unfaithful to the genre of fairy tales. It's time to return.
Now, I have a lot of reading to do, but the dogs are staring at me. Guess it's time for a walk.
Sigh.

Sigh."
I hate it when our dog stares at me. Especially when I want to read. He's got it down to a science. :)
