F1Wild This will be kind of like a book take on the show, The Marriage Ref (where a couple's tiff is discussed by a celeb panel and then a final decision is made by "The Marriage Ref"). I have so many books on my TBR list and each time I finish (or get to the last few pages of) a book I start the dreaded task of deciding on my next read.

Here we will list our soon-to-finish book and then 2 (or 3 tops) books next on our list and let our fellow book enthusiasts decide what our next read will be - final decision and we must stick with it!

I'll start - I'm ending The Postmistress and have to decide between:
1. Wench: A Novel by Dolen Perkins-Valdez
2. Moloka'i by Alan Brennert
3. Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

F1Wild Lori, please let me know if this should be in the "Recommendations" folder instead (and mover it if so). Cheers!

message 3: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments I love this idea!

message 4: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Maybe there should be a time limit - like 1 day?

message 5: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments Wench! Because I've had it on my TBR and I'm wondering how it'll turn out!

Thoughts on Postmistress?

message 6: by Petra (new)

Petra Moloka'i. I've heard nothing but good about this one and his other book, Honolulu. Perhaps I'll be incited to start Moloka'i as well. It's been on my TBR list for awhile.

It's a quick read (when not under the unwanted brain slur of pain medication) - very gripping in areas, a little predictable in others and sad at times, but I have a few last pages to go in order for the whole thing to be wrapped up. I could see it easily made into a movie. Its characters are pretty different, when compared to other similar novels - not good or bad though.

OK, 1 vote for Wench!

message 8: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild 1 vote for Moloka'i, 1 for Wench.

message 9: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Darn it, now I really want to read Moloka'i and Mudbound. My TBR is getting insane!

But I'm going to have to vote for Mudbound, as it's the one I would read first. :o)

message 10: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Haha - thanks for the vote! And so now we have 1 vote for each choice. I need some tie-breakers!

message 11: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I vote for Wench.

message 12: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Yeah - 2 for Wench. I hope for a final decision by tomorrow, by The Book Ref!

message 13: by Shona (new)

Shona (anovelobsession) I vote for Mudbound - I've read it and really really enjoyed it!

message 14: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild 2 Wench, 2 Mudbound and 1 Moloka'i. Final decision will be end of Sat. (just in time as I finished The Postmistress last night).

message 15: by Kalei (new)

Kalei McDonnell | 3 comments This is a neat idea! I haven't read any of the 3 books on your read-next list but they all sound great. My vote is for Moloka'i.

message 16: by Emma (new)

Emma | 100 comments This is such a great idea! I would say Wench, just becuase I really want to know what you would think of it, then I can decide if I should add it to my TBR list. teehee, sorry, alterior motive. I am so excited to read the Postmistress as well!

message 17: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I haven't read any of those, but Moloka'i is the one I would pick to read out of the three.

message 18: by Petra (new)

Petra LOL! F1Wild, you've got your hands full with this decision. Let us know which one you choose.

message 19: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Hmmm, maybe I should have only had 2 choices 'cause now I have a tie between Wench & Moloka'i, both with 3 votes.

Decision at midnight Pacific.

message 20: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) I vote Moloka'i! I haven't read it yet but I'm thinking of moving it to the top of my TBR pile.

message 21: by Kaion (last edited Mar 20, 2010 09:29PM) (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I vote Moloka'i for having fewer blurb cliches. (You're going to tell us if we chose good, right?)

message 22: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Moloka'i by Alan Brennert WINS with 5 votes (to Wench's 3 & Mudbound's 2)!

Thank you for all who chose Moloka'i and know the other 2 are still on the TBR list.

message 23: by Kaion (last edited Mar 25, 2010 05:38PM) (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I start my spring break on Saturday, and I've got to get through at least a few owned TBRs. I'm a terrible chooser, so please choose for me!

Category: contemporary-ish reads with terribly generic summaries
A Question of Attraction A Novel by David Nicholls or Off the Record A Novel by Jennifer O'Connell or Nailed by Patrick Jones ?

message 24: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Oh I would have to read Off the Record: A Novel mostly because I secretly have the fantasy that this happened to me!!! I vote for this one!

message 25: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I would read Off the Record:A Novel.

message 26: by Emma (new)

Emma | 100 comments Hmmm, none of them are exactly the genre I would normally read, but I think Off the Record sounds very interesting, but so does Nailed. I may have to vote for Nailed.

message 27: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne (a-town) | 308 comments None of them are something that I'd generally read either, but nailed sounds ok. I'll put in a vote for Nailed.

message 28: by Kaion (last edited Mar 29, 2010 01:58PM) (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) Oh boy, a tie, so I went with Off the Record for getting two votes first! (It didn't live up to the premise.)

Historical fiction-ish: (I got to pack away another TBR before I un-guilty enough to make a trip to the library)

1. The Lazarus Project by Aleksandar Hemon
2. The Book of Salt A Novel by Monique Truong
3. Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende

message 29: by El (new)

El Kaion, I'd go with The Lazarus Project. That's only because I went to a reading of Hemon's and enjoyed it. I haven't gotten around to reading anything by him yet, but I think I'll like him.

message 30: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I didn't like Daughter of Fortune very much. I don't know anything about the other two but I vote for The Lazerus Project, based on name coolness.

message 31: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) The Lazarus Project it is!

message 32: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild OK, I'm ready for another decision as I'm nearly finished with Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. I've decided to go back to a love of mine and read in the Asian genre again, but cannot decide. Please help by voting. My three possibilities are:
1. My Splendid Concubine by Lloyd Lofthouse My Splendid Concubine by Lloyd Lofthouse, forward by Anchee Min.
2. Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian
3. Sushi for One? (Sushi Series #1) by Camy Tang Sushi for One? by Camy Tang

message 33: by El (new)

El I read Soul Mountain several years ago. I'd say go with that one. It's one that I actually appreciated more later. Like I think I thought it was okay when I read it, but I think about it now with stronger feelings about it.

message 34: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild That's one for Soul Mountain.

message 35: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I second Soul Mountain.

message 36: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Soul Mountain

message 37: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild OK, I will read Soul Mountain Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian by Gao Xingjian!! Just in time, too - as I cannot fathom a night without a read!! Cheers for the help!!
