Contemporary:
Historical OR Regency: Suddenly You by Lisa Kleypas
Erotic OR BDSM: Tempting the Beast by Lora Leigh
PNR:
Fantasy:
Women's Fiction OR Chick-lit:
GLBT:
Young Adult:
Non-Fiction:
Religious Romance (BONUS): Leave a Candle Burning by Lori Wick*
***Discussion: Have you tried this genre before? What did you think about this book/author?
New comments in bold
- Contemporary: I've maintained for a long, long, long time that I didn't care for contemporary romance. I've read some but generally don't seek it out. Since finishing this book I've been singing a different tune and am not totally surprised because I've read and loved so much of the author's historical fiction.
- Historical OR Regency:
- Erotic OR BDSM:
- PNR: I love urban fantasy and I love romance so PNR is like the best of both worlds for me. I enjoy this series and this author and like so many others I am definitely anticipating future installments to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Yay!
- Fantasy: I chose an urban fantasy novel as a sub-genre of fantasy. It has been my very favorite genre for the past several years and although I struggled to get into this book—the world building was intense—the second half was so much better. I plan to continue with this series.
- Women's Fiction OR Chick-lit: These types of books aren't my favorite because I usually have a hard time identifying with the characters. This book was alright although I'm not sure I'd rush out to grab anything else by this author. It was a fast read.
- GLBT: This was the first book I’d read by this author. And while I’ve read some books in the past that would qualify as GLBT, it is not a genre I am intimately familiar with. I liked this book—I’d read more by this author. Would I read more from this genre? Sure. But probably only if it came highly recommended (as this book was).
- Young Adult: YA is okay. I don’t love it. I don’t hate it. This was the first book I’d read from this author. The story was told from several different characters’ perspectives so there was a lot of head hopping. I found this very distracting at first but once I got used to the style; I enjoyed the story quite a bit. Definitely a good read for anyone who is a fan of the genre.
- Non-Fiction: I generally don’t read non-fiction for pleasure but this book came highly recommended and I’m glad I read it—it was very interesting and hard to put down, which I can’t believe I’m saying because I never would have guessed that I could have a positive reaction to a book about cancer and cell culture. I have to admit that I’ve always found science to be somewhat dull. But because the book focused more on the human interest side of HeLa cell culture, I was much more engaged in the history and I feel a bit more informed about unethical medical studies involving uninformed subjects and the depth and breadth of discrimination against black people in this country. The next time I encounter a bio-ethical newspaper headline, I’ll probably pay closer attention to it than I ever would have before reading this book. If/when this author publishes something else, I'd have no qualms about checking it out.

Erotic OR BDSM:
PNR:
Fantasy:
Women's Fiction OR Chick-lit:
GLBT:
Young Adult:
Non-Fiction:
Religious Romance (BONUS):
***Discussion: Have you tried this genre before? What did you think about this book/author?
- Contemporary: I've maintained for a long, long, long time that I didn't care for contemporary romance. I've read some but generally don't seek it out. Since finishing this book I've been singing a different tune and am not totally surprised because I've read and loved so much of the author's historical fiction.
- Historical OR Regency: I have read a lot from this genre and will definitely visit it again and again in the future. It is an old favorite and reading from this genre is a lot like putting on my favorite old sweater and lounging about the house. Definitely love LK as well. She's one of the best!
- Erotic OR BDSM: This was the 3rd erotic romance I've read and I thought it was silly. I have a hard time getting into erotica--I think the over-abundance of sex and the weak plot doesn't work for me. I probably won't rush out to read more from this genre in the immediate future.
- Religious Romance: This was cheesy and pretty lame. I read a lot of religious romance as a teen but no longer find them satisfying. This was typical Lori Wick. I probably wouldn't rush out to buy more but if another religious romance was given to me (as this was) I'd probably read it anyway.
