Did anyone else feel like this book got remarkably better after Merewyn left Rumon?

I thought his journey to find her was quite exciting!

And I was SO proud to find her happy, content and well adjusted with her new husband and baby. What a strong, resilient woman to make the best of everything the way she has!
I like to think that's what I'd be like if I were forced into some terrible situation...of course - I hope never to actually test myself!

Rumons visit was interesting. I loved when Merewyn confessed to being more passionate and loving with Sigurd while Rumon was there...that feels very realistic to me.

I'm loving this book now. Like most Seton's it's really grabbed a hold of me in the second part.

Barbara Hoyland (sema4dogz) | 145 comments Yes indeed, I agree with all you have said Mandy, Rumon was always pain in the whatsit to me, but Merewyn felt like a real girl , then real young woman, and finally a real woman.
Her life journey was exotic, but very believable - like Miranda in Dragonwyck, have you read that one?

PS I take your points re Liz 1 , but stil think she was transcendant

Mandy Moody | 544 comments When I read the names Erik the Red and Leif Erickson I knew they were familiar, but couldn't quite remember (from my long-ago world history courses!) who each of them were. I've been meaning to wiki them for days.
I finally did it this morning and I'm so impressed (as usual) with Setons historical accuracy.
I'm very close to the end now, will hopefully finish today. It's very good.

Yes and yes. I thought the book picked up considerably when Merewyn got a life :), and thought Rumon got depth when he adventured to find her. I grew disappointed again in Merewyn on her return to England. Seems like she abandoned all the growth she had accomplished.

Brigid (sillybrigid) | 19 comments I was kind of disappointed with the second half of the book, at least once Merewyn returned to England. The plot was rambling, and it just didn't grab me. I'm glad there was so little of Rumon, though. I also was really bothered by the treatment of all the servants, not just by the character, but by Seton. They were all completely stupid and one-dimensional. And I promise I'm not just complaining because a character named Brigid was so moronic. ;)

Over all, though, I enjoyed the book. I wished it had grabbed me a bit more, but I did love Seton's writing style.
