RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I am a kickass jaywalker.

You?

I can't even remember the last time I jaywalked. I hope that it wasn't recently. They say the memory is the second thing to go. :-)

Mandy (mandypants) My jaywalking skills are terrible. I'm scared of crossing streets even at intersections with the little blinking walk light. I feel much better when I'm holding hands with someone while crossing streets. :-)

janine | 7709 comments my jaywalking skills are excellent. if i have to i will stop in between lanes and just walk in the middle of the road. cars respect me.

Anthony Buckley (anthonydbuckley) | 145 comments The prohibition on jaywalking is one thing that foreigners find curious about the USA. Here in the UK, people come on the radio explaining to an astonished audience how, in the USA, they got prosecuted for jaywalking.

Jen (jeninseattle) Years ago I worked as a probation officer, and I was shocked at how many people got picked up on warrants because they got yanked for jaywalking.

Me personally, I have no use for waiting at traffic lights. Bring on the illegal crossing.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i live in a mid-small town (@40k)and we cross about where we want. i have NEVER heard of anyone ever get busted for jaywalking. i just sort of step out in the street everyday as one of our buildings is across a semi busy street. i stand in the middle and wait or dash across throwing up a hand of thanks to oncoming cars

Félix (habitseven) Jaywalkers in Omaha are truly risking their lives. Drivers here routinely ignore stop lights and crosswalk markers. I cross against the light only when I can see there are no cars coming close. I've stepped into a crosswalk when one was a block away, and heard a definite increase in engine sound as it approached me. They have no idea what those stripes mean in the crosswalk.

Yeah, watch out.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I jaywalk all the time, I'm quite the lawbreaker. I also ignore police tape.
Just ask Larry. :)

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's true! I can attest to that. Freaked me out, having never crossed crime-scene tape before!

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'm an excellent jaywalker, since I spent my formative years in New York.

I won't jaywalk in Montreal or Paris. Instant death.

Baltimore has the worst jaywalkers ever - guys who just saunter out into the street and dare you to hit them.

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I remember that from Baltimore. Albany, my home town, is the same way.

Anthony Buckley (anthonydbuckley) | 145 comments My flat gives me a good view of the main street of my home town. Here, with the exception of those who need to cross at the more dangerous central crossroads (where there are traffic lights), all the pedestrians step fearlessly into the road and expect the traffic to pause to let them cross. And indeed, the motorists are very kind and do indeed let them through. It contributes to the sense of friendliness in the place.

However, I know a town of similar size and shape in France. Here, to cross the road in the same manner would be to invite instant death. Life is more exciting in France.

message 15: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie I will never jaywalk again!! My friend received an $85 fine from the police the other day (no Joke) they are cracking down on jay walkers in my city. A lot of pedestrians are getting killed. That was the most expensive Starbucks run shes ever had.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments in the middle of Beijing there is a part of the city that they block off from cars and traffic and everyone can just walk in the streets. it is a big commerce area and pedestrians have the run of the place even though they are actual streets

This is true of many, perhaps most British cities!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments BunWat wrote: "Rome is also a very scary city in which to jaywalk. Although people do it."

Rome scared the shit out of me in about 10,000 ways. The traffic was right at the top. But before I went there everybody warned me about how the entire populace was out to rob you, etc. so I walked around assuming every Roman citizen wanted my camera.

Phil | 11837 comments I worked for a time in the financial district in San Francisco. There were a couple of places there where all of the lights would turn red, and pedestrians could cross whatever darn way they wanted, even diagonally.
