Okay, I don't work very often with quotes, so I want to check if I'm missing something here:

I went to delete this quote -- it's from a video game writer with no books on GR -- but when I click "edit" the author shows up as "Lauren Blackwell" instead of "Dave Gilbert". Is this a bug or am I crazy here?

That's weird. It's telling me Lauren Blackwell too.

Known bug. It works like this:

* Quote is attributed to someone in the author database, and a link is created.
* Someone edits the quote to correct the author. Corrected author is not in the database. Therefore no replacement link is created, and the corrected author is invisible.
