Steve Anderson | 60 comments Started Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby. Can't believe I've never read it, since I'm a huge soccer dork. Plus, I was looking for something lighter after The Warsaw Anagrams, which was a great but grim historical thriller.

message 703: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Started The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for a Science Group read. Looks really interesting.

Bj, take your Kindle with you...LOL...when I was working, I loved taking my Kindle to work. I would "hide" it in my notebook or in a folder & no one was the wiser!! I worked in an office with 8 other gals & during "slow" periods, I would read. The folder was especially effective if the boss decided to stroll in...LOL...QUICK! Close the folder!! ;)

Kae, I have that book on my Kindle as well but haven't read it yet. Looking forward to reading what you thought of it.

Max (52xmax) | 6 comments Fever Pitch is indeed an awesome memoir about love and obsession. Really funny, but also very insightful.

I'd reccomend that you read Hornby's novels too, starting with High Fidelity, which is also about love and obsession, but over music and relationships instead of life and football.

There is also a great 1999 movie adaptation starring John Cusack, check that out if you haven't seen it yet.

message 710: by Louise (new)

Louise (LouiseZ) | 13 comments I'm just seconding Fever Pitch's suggestion. I saw the movie first which led me to the book, which led me all of his other books. Enjoy.

message 711: by Steve (last edited Jun 09, 2011 07:37AM) (new)

Steve Anderson | 60 comments @Max, thanks. I'm liking it so far, though I'm surprised how much football there really is -- not that this doesn't appeal to me as a soccer dork. I will be reading High Fidelity. I thought the movie version was great.

@Louise, I actually saw the Fever Pitch movie years ago (w/ a young Colin Firth!) and liked it. Thanks!

Steve

Chrissie I just finished an egalley of Smuggled, which I enjoyed very much It is historical fiction about life in Romania and Hungary through the experiences of one Jewish individual, who as an infant was smuggled from Hungary to Romania to escape death at the hands of the Nazis. You experience life in Ceausescu's Romania, life behind the Iron Curtain and life after the barrier came down. The book covers the time period 1940s through to 1990. Here follows my spoiler-free review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now I will start Running in the Family b/c I love memoirs, love learning about different countries, in this case Ceylon, and b/c it is short. I prefer reading on my Kindle.

message 713: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will now start The Kitchen House. Everyone has read it. Some love it, and I think for me this will be something to sink into.

message 740: by Steve (new)

Steve Anderson | 60 comments Finally finishing Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby by Nick Hornby. It's funny and heartfelt and the onslaught of soccer and Arsenal details works fine for this football dork, but I'm surprised it worked so well for so many mainstream readers. In any case, it's a nice break from my usual historical espionage and mystery fiction and nicely coincides with my Portland Timbers FC returning to the top flight of American soccer in MLS. This last part won't make much sense to most of you, but it means a ton to this Portlander!
