Bluemoon I know you live in Canada, so you would not have any PBS stations, but does Canada have any stations that carry PBS shows? I was just wondering because Masterpiece Mystery on PBS is now showing weekly Agatha Christie movies, and I know you love her books too. I am watching them :)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
If you can watch PBS videos from Canada (not sure if it is like the BBC iplayer, which limits viewers by country) go to PBS.org and go to the Masterpiece Mystery section, they stream the movies for free online. I watched last weeks movie that way. Let me know if it works for you :)

Well, that sucks! I used to watch that Canadian show Corner Gas, and also ran into that issue. Well, check your local tv listening for Masterpiece Mystery. Do you have a way to search listings on your tv for the next three weeks? That is how our cable works, not sure about yours.

Chachic Bluemoon, I think the trend right now is angels. But maybe after angels, they'll go with ghosts.

Ghosts?! Ahhh! About a year ago me and a bunch of my writer friends all happened to be writing ghost stories and we were like "Heehee! Ghosts are the new vampires!" GOSH DARN IT, everyone stole our idea. hmph. >:(

Although Chachic is right, there are an awful lot of angel books too ...

Amelia | 38 comments Just thought I'd fill you in --
I saw that for some reason no one had checked out Catching Fire on audiobook, so I checked it out Tuesday. Yes, I know that's the day Mockingjay was released, but now if the cliff hanger is as big as everyone says it was, I don't have to wait to finish the trilogy :)

Although I'm only one disc into it, I'm not too thrilled with the narrator, and if it doesn't get any better I might have to wait for the book. She seems to ennunciate words at random. Like "THE dog (pause) ran to the CHAIR". It's somewhat jarring in places... we'll see.

DON'T SPOIL IT FOR ME!

message 62: by Chachic (new)

Chachic Haha A.M.Y., hope you like it! I just finished reading Mockingjay today and I'm so happy that I didn't get to read any spoilers while waiting for my copy.

I listened to about 40 minutes of Hunger Games and gave up. What a poor choice for a narrator for such a wonderful series.

Could be because Collins uses so many dang fragments … *grumbles*

message 65: by Amelia (new)

Amelia | 38 comments She got better by the second disc (maybe third), but it still wasn't my favorite audiobook. I was engrossed by the story, but not by the narrator, and it was the words (not the voice) that kept me interested.

Don't ask me Bluemoon I was totally disappointed by that book and it was a really long disappointment because it was a long book!

Kourtni (kourkyloo) | 732 comments Bluemoon Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia is the only book I have ever really really really disliked and not finished. :/ I won't say hate, but yeah, really really really did not like it. At all.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments not me, i'm planning on a trip tomorrow and I'm excited!!

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments I was just talking about a trip to the theater to see HP... But I have been to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving and Nashville for interview all in the past week or so.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments All-in-all I'd have to say it definitely wasn't my favorite movie. The first 30 minutes were mind-blowing though. And I do think it was more faithful to the books than many of the other HP films. You can tell there are obviously some things hidden throughout the movie that are specifically for book fans because there is A LOT that I don't think casual movie-goers would understand.

So maybe I'd go with a... 6 or 7 out of 10. I thought Half Blood Prince and Prisoner of Azkaban were much better. (And I'm talking about the movies specifically. My favorite movies are not my favorite books and vice versa)

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments I think we are completely on the same page then. I felt the same way. And they cut the Lupin scene at Grimmauld Place???? Why? I was really looking forward to that! It's the only scene that I think I really truly missed.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments What? It's totally essential to the plot!

SPOILERS BELOW

Okay, so it may just be because I overanalyze or more likely because I love that storyline, but I think it is very essential with regard to Harry's growing up. When he tells Lupin off he is no longer a child taking the advice of a mentor but a man giving a friend the cold hard truth. Lupin is looking for a "noble" means of escape and Harry refuses to give it to him. Not to mention the amazing parallel that exists because Harry had no parents and Teddy had no parents, but we see Teddy having grown up in a good safe environment, the type of environment Harry could not have, and the type of environment Harry helped to create.

Okay, officially off my soap box! :)

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments More SPOILERS!

yeah that's the point. He doesn't grow up with his parents... just like Harry.

I do see your point though. It would be impossible to develop all the amazing sub-plots and storylines and actually do them justice. I'd be much more upset if they cut other storylines, like Snape's for example. I will be thoroughly disappointed if they screw that one up. I also cannot wait to see Molly Weasley kill Bellatrix!! I think that could be amazing!!!

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments ugh... i know right!!! So, how many days until part 2??

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments Yea!~ See it's more about what we're excited to see in part 2, but if you haven't read the books it would be major spoilers.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments hint hint nudge nudge! you should too!

Our family really needs everyone's good thoughts and prayers right now. Found out a few days ago that my oldest son is using drugs again and has been fired from his job. Hope this isn't TMI, just could really use some moral support.

Oh no Shannen :( I am a drug court Probation Officer, so I have way more knowledge of the toll drugs can take on people's lives - especially families. I am very saddened to hear this from you. My sister's 18 year old step son just got arrested for trying to rob an old couple in their home and he has admitted his addiction to prescription pain pills. I am very sensitive to this affliction and you have my total support.

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, Heidi. It's almost impossible to talk to our parents about it because their only advice is not to turn our backs on him. By telling him that he is wrong and needs to leave our home until he gets help is not turning our backs on him. We've been through this a few times with him and thought he was finally passed it all. He had a beautiful supportive girlfriend, a really good job and was getting ready to move out with his girlfriend. Now, he has no job, no girlfriend and his staying with my parents. Ugh.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 148 comments Sorry to hear your news Shannen! Unlike Heidi I do not have experience in this area, but I wish you the best and I'm sending you a virtual hug and hopefully some yoda-like wisdom on how to best deal.

message 90: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Brittany. We don't know how to deal with it either. Just don't want to be the kind of parents who have a drug addict living with them and saying that they didn't know. Looking back over the last month or two, we can definitely pick out things that we missed.

message 91: by Kourtni (new)

Kourtni (kourkyloo) | 732 comments Shannen I'm sorry about your son. I also have a little experience in this area as my brother is going through the whole drug court thing right now. He is 27 and has been sober for a year. (This is the first time I've seen him sober since he was about 17) So I know a bit about what you're going through.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, book twin. I'm sorry to hear about your brother but one year sober is awesome. :)

message 93: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
The only thing I would say is to try to be supportive but with your eyes wide open. Too many people (sounds like his grandparents may be one of them) think they have to overlook things and give their 100% unconditional support. This is the worst thing for an addict IMO. If an addict thinks your will always be there to bond them out, (literally and figuratively), you are actually making things worse as there is no reason to change. It is possible to set firm boundries and still love someone. My thoughts are with you and yours :(

message 94: by Kourtni (new)

Kourtni (kourkyloo) | 732 comments Yes, one year sober is awesome! I am so proud of him. And I agree with Heidi. It took my family telling my brother that we love him but we can't help him until he decides to help himself. That and the threat of going to jail seemed to slap some sense into him.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, Bluemoon. He has an appointment so we can find out what kind of treatment options he has. He would like to go into in-patient but it doesn't look like that is going to be an option. He has shed a lot of tears this week so I'm hoping this is his rock bottom and that he can stay clean for good this time.

I recommend regular drug tests Shannen - you can get them anywhere (Walmart, Walgreens). All my clients in recovery have told me they like being held accountable and knowing they are going to be screened really helps them. I am not sure what drug your son is using, and that is your business, but I screen most of my heroin and cocaine users 3 times per week until they remain clean for some time (at least 3-6 months) because most drugs are usually out of your system in two days and all drug users know this info.

Relapse is part of recovery, so please know that longer term recovery is possible. I always tell my clients it is not always what you did, (i.e. used), but what you do afterwards that shows what kind of person you are.

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

I would assume his treatment plan will require regular drug tests but will find out more tomorrow. When he called, they talked about putting him on Suboxone which I don't like. It seems to me to be trading one addiction for another. I just have a ton of questions.

Suboxone is good, but like you said it is a crutch for a lot of people. It is also very expensive unless he has insurance. Most people hate withdrawl symptoms, so they will do anything not to go through them so suboxone can help mentally for them. No one on my current caseload has used Suboxone and they have all been fine without it. I would make sure wherever he does his treatment actually witnesses the drug screens - it drives me crazy when treatment providers just give them a cup and tell them to go in the bathroom. Hello! They all talk to each other and most unfortunately have learned to be manipulative so of course they tell each other ways to get out of drug tests. Sorry if you feel I am going on and on about this - I have been working with addicts for 12 years and have learned too much the hard way. I will say all of them are really good people so it breaks my heart when they stumble.

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

He says he isn't on anything at all right now so he doesn't need it for withdrawal. I think I'm going to put up a fight about it if they really push it. My sister is a mental health counselor and is going to find out more about it for me. You can go on and on all you want, Heidi. :) I know all about the lying and manipulation. We have told him that he can't come back to our house until he has successfully completed 30 days of treatment and repaid at least half of the money that he borrowed from my youngest son.

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
I just randomly asked my co-worker what he thinks about suboxone and upon review we decided the only clients who actually took it never stayed clean. I think it is because the people who normally want it are the addicts who want a "quick fix" and are not really ready for change, so I would agree with your thoughts on it. Addicts are so manipulative that holding them accountable is the only way to help them get clean.
