Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) In addition to the obvious (reading!), what's everyone up to? What are your plans for today, tomorrow?

I've been a bit out of the loop here on gr's since last week; we were away at our wkend/vaca home for a brief get-away before my husband returns to full time work in May. (He was laid off last July). Despite the Torrential rain from Sat night through Tues morning (and SNOW showers Tues night and yesterday morning!) it was so nice being up there!

Nothing much exciting for today (cleaning!) but I am looking forward to the library book club meet-up this evening. (This mo's selection was The Quarry; an interesting, odd and compelling short read).

Hi Jo. We haven't met yet, I'm Audrey Braun. It's nice to jump out from under a pile of work and talk about something else for a second. Plans for the day, well, besides more work and complaining about the Portland rain (excessive lately!!!!), I've got four books going at once--just added Laura Lippman's "Life Sentences" to the pile-- but will get outside during the sunny intervals of the day and walk the dogs and perhaps I will even stop by the nursery and pick up a few plants to line my balcony.
Not familiar with The Quarry but will check it out. So maybe a trip to Powell's as well?

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Hello Audrey! Great to meet you! And a fellow container gardener to boot! Yay! The Quarry is definitely not something I would have read if not for the book club. Unique!

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Jo, so excited....hubby got a job!! Great start to my sniffling, stuffed up nose morning! So glad to hear that! Will make things better for you I'm sure! I have been following your weekends at the 'cabin'. One of these days, I'm gonna hop a plane and you guys can pick me up at the airport on your way to the mountains!! Make sure Vic has one of his V friends with him...haha!
Haven't been reading much lately; except for how to cope kinda books. Women have to be such survivors! It's flippin' bull!
Keep smilin' and know I think of ya often!
Another day of work for me, hope it goes quick as I'm feeling so crappy. Thought it was allergies but don't know. My sis said to get some Zyrtec. So much cold/allergy med makes me a zombie; I hate that feeling!
Hope you all have a great day!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Hey Cindy!!! Thank you about hubby's job! It will definitely make things easier and soon we can drop the $418/mo cobra payments! YAY! You are welcome at either of our homes any time, any day! Just say when! I love Zyrtec D! (Doesn't make me foggy, that I know of, lol!) Allergies make me feel like crap all the time. (Could be a lot making you feel like crap right now - make sure to keep up your strength so you don't get sick!) And I agree, women do have to be such survivor's and I agree that it's flippin bull! Hugs & love to you!!! I think of you often every day! Miss you!

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Don't be surprised Miss Jo, when I call and say pick me up at the airport!! Tell Vic to get ready! haha

Keep smiling!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) LOL! At least let me know before your plane leaves AZ so I can make sure Vic will be home, lol! I don't drive much anymore and definitely not to the area airports, lol! (Fly into Philly PA, much nicer & easier airport to deal with! Or Atlantic City NJ or Newark NJ - nothing in NY!)

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Heck I'll head on down to Philly and you can show us both around Brenda!!!

message 9: by Cindy (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) | 212 comments Jo, I'm glad you started this thread :)

As for me, I've been working working working, and it won't let up until at least next Wednesday! :(

A plan with lots of potential for mischief! lol

:~) I'm glad you're glad Jess! And just remember, the end is in sight! You'll get through just fine!

message 12: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) Cindy, make a stop in Houston from AZ and visit me. :)

Making (pretend)plans to visit us can take your mind off your troubles and make you feel loved and wanted. Hang in there!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Next time we fly out to Houston to visit our nephew & his wife, I'll let you know Rose! I'd love to meet a fellow Chick in person!!!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Tonight's book club meet-up was so much Fun! A larger and more lively group than our first meeting last month.

message 15: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I just had a surprise visitor. I was taking the trash out and saw something in the bushes. I grabbed a flashlight and saw a little kitty face staring up at me. It seems to be OK, but definitely young. Even though I know better, I gave it some of my cats' food. Hopefully it's just a neighbor's cat that got out for the night. If not, I'll have to call the SPCA. Still, it's cute.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) I'm a sucker for cute kitties!!!

message 17: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I just went out and checked and I didn't see it. Hopefully it went home. 3 drama queen/king kitties of my own is enough for me!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) I hear you on that!!! lol

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 390 comments I just took my last final for the semester.... now I have an entire month to read things that I want to read instead of having to read!!! Now to decide what first...... decisions, decisions.....

message 20: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Yay, Kat! That's always a good feeling.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Ah, when reading for pleasure returns! Great feeling, isn't it?!

Well, today's Moms 70th birthday and we'll head over to her place in a little while with her gifts and a Boston Cream Cake. She's opted out of going any where for her birthday, including coming over here for dinner, because, well, she's never been a fan of birthdays. It's not surprising to me though I am a tad disappointed. Even if she was grumpy the whole time I still think it would be better for her to be out & about than shut in the house all day. Ah well! That's what she wants!

Hope everyone's having a great week so far!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Mom's bday was better than expected! Yay! She was in a good mood, came over for dinner, had a good time! I'm so glad!

message 23: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments That's great, Jo!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Thanks Jennifer! You've no idea, lol! And we spent the morning together too and she was still in a good mood!

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments Hi Ho my great friends! Cindy, you know the first stop on your trip is Vermont. It will do you a world of good to jump on that plane and make a trip. Sometimes, getting away from it all clears your thinking.

As to my day. My kids live in Houston, it is Mother's Day and I am planning a fun day for myself. Meeting a girlfriend, going out for brunch, then shopping in Saratoga.

Hope you all have a wonderful Mother's Day!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Sounds like a great day Meg! Happy Mother's Day!

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments Hi all! Had 3 wisdom teeth cut out the day this post started (the fourth was pulled 3 years ago), and haven't spent too much time online since. Got dry socket in both bottoms and have spent the last 16 days healing. Finished some quilting, a few books, did some shopping with the downtime. Hope to get caught up on housework this weekend. :)

message 28: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Oh Brittany! That can be such a pain. My daughter's wisdom teeth removal last summer was awful. I sympathize. Enjoy your quilting time and have a productive but good weekend!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) I didn't have dry sockets but I did have a total of 8 teeth out when I was 16 (including all of my wisdom teeth) and that was an experience I hope to never repeat for any other teeth I may have to have out in the future! I hope you're feeling better Brittany!

message 30: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (findingjackie) | 214 comments I just got back from seeing Bryan Adams in concert. It was completely and totally awesome and now I'm remembering why I had a crush on him when I was in my early 20s.. The only down side was the girl next to me was singing and she didn't know the words and on the security guards would run around and yell at the people taking photos when they were told not to at the beginning of the show (opps).

Cindy, if you're making a tour, you have to stop down here. :) I'm glad your husband found something!

message 31: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Jo wrote: "I didn't have dry sockets but I did have a total of 8 teeth out when I was 16 (including all of my wisdom teeth) and that was an experience I hope to never repeat for any other teeth I may have to ..." EIGHT!! Jo! Yikes. I can't imagine eight at one time. You must have been beside yourself!

My poor daughter had a terrible time as well. She got a dry socket, and a day later her cheek on the other side started to seriously swell - it was draining into a huge cyst. They opened it up the tooth area, found a small bone fragment, but that wasn't causing the problem. They put a huge straw sized shunt in the soft tissue of her cheek. It was so painful, but the only meds that worked caused her to vomit violently. The timing of all this was half the issue and disappointment. It was a week before my husband and his immediate family were leaving for Canada to go sprinkle some of my father-in-law's ashes at their favorite fishing spot they have gone to for 30 years. My daughter couldn't go and she was devastated. *sigh*

Angie (tikkledpink) I am going to an 80s themed fund-raiser party tonight! Excited!

message 33: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Angie - sounds fun. What you going to dress like?

message 34: by Angie (new)

Angie (tikkledpink) It's funny because I struggled with what to wear. I thought it would be easy! I ended up settling on a long pink and black leopard print sweater with black leggings and a thick black belt. Gold flats, gold bangles and a gold necklace. I was thinking about wearing my hair in a high side ponytail and I have a big black bow to put in it! I wish there was somewhere to post a pic! I'm really excited about it!

message 35: by Nancy (new)

Nancy That's a riot Angie. That was my era! LOL - sounds a little disco. You can take a pic and post it to your own page at least! How about a little Earth Wind and Fire to go with that!

message 36: by Angie (new)

Angie (tikkledpink) Haha... I was born in '79 so I remember a lot of the 80s but I think you would've had to be at least a teen in the 80s to really have embraced the era! I actually feel like Peggy Bundy in my outfit!! I know plastic bangles and such would fit more to the era, but I wanted to modernize it a little bit. The party is at a fancy hotel in Santa Monica, CA... thus the reason I struggled... I didn't want to be too tacky (as a lot of the trends of the 80s was!)

I have some black leg warmers too... should I wear them too?

message 37: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Oh yes - I started teaching in 1975!! I was more than embracing the era!

message 38: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Ooh, teeth pulling is not fun. Hope you're feeling better, Brittany.

The party sounds fun, Angie.

My boyfriend was in his nephew's wedding this morning. Unfortunately, we had to leave early because my boyfriend had to go to sleep so he could work tonight. That's left me to watch baseball on TV and doze on the couch. Perfect Saturday in my book. :)

That was my hubby who found a job Jackie! And if Cindy's going down to see you, I'm tagging along!!!

Angie, hope you had a great time! Sounds like a fun theme for a fundraiser!

AngieA Allen (angelwings55) My goal for this spring was to start a Square Foot Garden that I learned about from this book All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space!and myDH and I got it together yesterday. He built two boxes, one 6 inches high and one 12 inches deep for the root veggies. We'll see how it goes!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) That's great Angie! Good luck! I'm a fellow gardener, but because of where we live & despite having a lot of space for an apt complex, I only container garden as the landscapers mgmt uses are less likely to destroy what's in them as opposed to anything anyone plants in the ground, lol! I read (and have) the original Square Foot Gardening. I'd love to be able to do that some day!

message 42: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments Thanks ladies. The infection is gone now, but the jaw pain remains. Nancy, what your daughter went through sounds terrible. Luckily, they gave me Phenagren so I could tolerate the Percocet. Jo, your experience sounds excruciating, too. :(

We have had torrential rain for the last 12 hours... but the good thing is my lillies have popped up because of it!

message 43: by Angie (new)

Angie (tikkledpink) Brittany wrote: "We have had torrential rain for the last 12 hours... but the good thing is my lillies have popped up because of it!"

So, do lillies like a lot of water then? My husband recently bought me some and I replanted them in a big pot. The little instruction insert that came with them said to let the soil dry before re-watering them. I spray them every day with a spray bottle and water them about every other day b/c I can't really stand letting the soil completely dry out. But some of the lillies seem to not be too happy... ?? Maybe they need a lot of water after all??

message 44: by Nancy (new)

Nancy My lilies that are in the yard like full sun and don't require a ton of water. Don't know how they would do in a pot??

message 45: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments Not sure... mine have survived floods and drought. But they all literally blossomed overnight through all that rain. Yesterday I didn't even see any buds on them. Mine are cannas, BTW.

message 46: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (missbrittany) | 336 comments According to eHow... (cannas)

Canna lilies need moist soil, but if the soil retains too much moisture and stays soggy, the cannas will suffer.

Water canna lilies generously throughout the growing season. Keep the soil evenly moist at all times.

Place between 2 and 4 inches of shredded mulch around the base of the plants to help them retain as much moisture as possible.

Canna lilies are tropical plants, so they need full sunlight. They grow best during the hottest part of the summer.

message 47: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (findingjackie) | 214 comments well.. that's what I get when I try to read threads when I'm half asleep and haven't had any coffee. :)

I've been considering doing some container gardening as well. My DH is sick of me talking myself in circles about it. I wanted to plant some tomatoes and cucumbers but now I'm afraid I'm too late in the season to start so.. who knows. We're on about half a acre but I'm so not ready to deal with tilling, etc. I think some pots on the patio will scare me less.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Learned something new today with this thread about the Lillies!

Brittany, it definitely was an experience I hope to never have to repeat if I ever have any more teeth out!

Mel talks about literal square foot gardens (only 12 inches on each side) for container gardens. I'm thinking of putting some out front next year with flowers in them.
