HAHA!well seems like just what the doctor ordered!!

message 755: by Tasha (new)

Tasha | 4 comments I normally read one book at time, but lately I have found some good books that I am reading about 3 different ones now. It all depends on my mood.

message 756: by Christina (new)

Christina (oxtina143) I wish I could read more than one book at a time. I just can't. I get sucked into books too quickly to be able to jump around. Although I am guilty of being in the middle of countless different series. I have a problem with finishing series that aren't focused around one particular character and/or charaters. Either I love the first book and the rest don't measure up or I get well into a series and the last couple books are disapointments.

message 757: by Christine (new)

Christine (christine007) I used to be a one book person but recently so much has looked good (and I've been going through books faster than normal) that I have been working 2-3 at a time.

It is confusing and sometimes exhausting!

Just finished two books I was reading at same time- Elmore Leonard's newest and a Historical Fiction set in 1500's Venice- loved both!

PopcornReads - MkNoah (goodreadscompopcornreads) | 6 comments I'm normally a 1 fiction novel at a time reader. I may read a non-fiction book at the same time but those are all business related.

Since I began my book review web site, I've found that at times I read 2 fiction novels at the same time if I have a tight deadline (1 during the day & 1 at night before bed). I try not to do that but it does happen occasionally.

Reading a thriller now and 2/3 done with After Elizabeth The Rise of James of Scotland and the Struggle for the Throne of England by Leanda de Lisle
very interesting book on 1600's England- and really shows that Politicians were the same back then as they are now!!

Ha!! I figured politicians were probably always the same; self-serving, out to benefit themselves, and pretty much unconcerned about serving their constituents,.

message 762: by Gary (new)

Gary (mahoye) I feel odd having less than 3 or 4 books on the go at a time. Having said this, they are usually very different books, not only in genre but also in type and tone. I tend to write multiple books at one time as well. Although this may not be the norm among writers, I don't think it is rare, either.

message 763: by Dr. Zyllihapping (new)

Dr. Zyllihapping I-Don't-Have-A-Last-Name (i_wanna_be_a_paperback_writer) | 4 comments I usually read many books at the same time, like I'm currently reading 3, because I just finished The Catcher in the Rye and now I'm off to finish Lord of the Flies and The Great Gilly Hopkins and then read Catherine, Called Birdy.

message 764: by Ken (new)

Ken Fredette (klfredette) Me, myself and I read about 6 or 7 books at a time. I get bored easy so I'll finish the one that peeks my interest the most. Right now I'am reading Dying Gasp (Brazil), A Small Death in Lisbon (Portugal), and four Scandinavian books Three Seconds, The Stonecutter, Between Summer's Longing and Winter's End, and The Forest of Hours. I'm also re-reading Detective Inspector Huss because I read it years ago and I want to be able to discuss the book.

message 765: by Grace (new)

Grace | 3 comments I prefer one book at a time, but i often read 2 or 3.

message 766: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Boone | 8 comments I tend to read one book at a time. However I read very quickly and can finish an average length book in a day or two at the most.

message 767: by [deleted user] (new)

usually during school I read one book at a time because I get really busy but during breaks I usually read about three at a time because I finish books so quickly. I can usually finish a book in about 2-3 days but during school I finish in about a week

message 768: by [deleted user] (new)

I tend to read more than one book at once, because it takes me forever to finish a book usually (writing, sadly, takes a lot of time). Strangely, the longer the book is, the faster I tend to finish it. I have no idea why...

message 769: by Genine (new)

Genine Franklin-Clark (suz83yq) | 23 comments I like to have a gentle book (e.g., one by Alexander McCall Smith) for bedtime reading, a mystery for fun, a non-fiction for education/infomation/thought-provoking, and one "different". I do have to be careful not to read a British police procedural while I'm watching something like Midsomer Murders on DVD, lest I confuse the book and TV program.
I do not like short stories (over way too soon) and am too old for fantasy/vampire/romance books. I did read and enjoy them when I was younger.

message 770: by Genine (new)

Genine Franklin-Clark (suz83yq) | 23 comments I also always carry a book with me whereever I go, because You Never Know (car breaks down, traffic jam, in bathroom longer than anticipated, husband goes to restroom in restaurant....)

Genine wrote: "I also always carry a book with me whereever I go, because You Never Know (car breaks down, traffic jam, in bathroom longer than anticipated, husband goes to restroom in restaurant....)"

It sounds like you have a great reading routine! I agree, it's good to always have a book. I end up regretting it when I don't have one on me, and I could be reading.

message 772: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 26, 2011 08:11AM) (new)

I like long and short. Variety is nice, and some of the best books I've read have been short. Now, if I could only write something short...

message 773: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to read only one at a time until my best friend that I met at CFIDS support group told me she always reads 3 at once. Since she gave me the idea I am also reading more than one at once. Its actually not good for me but now I cannot stop.

I am reading about 5 at the moment. Sometimes I never get back to one that I started but just keep going as I keep checking them out.

Thanks Rick for inviting me. I had been a member here before but got "lost".

message 774: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Definitely a one book at a time reader, I prefer to keep the narrative pathways clear so that my poor mind can follow them! Also personally I think that reading several books at once is a little disconnecting as you'll have to resuscitate yourself after diving sans re-breather into a book only to attempt a similar unwise but blissful manoeuvre with another body of words of uncertain depths.

You are right as the other day I picked up one and wondered why the plot had changed so much! LOL! its a very bad idea for me as now I am more ADD than ever.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) I usually tend to have an audio in the bedroom I listen to when I finally "retire" for the evening. I either carry that one with me or have another I listen to when I'm doing "stuff" during the day. Then I usually have a print book going. Now I also have a graphic laying here that I pick up when I'm not settling in to read, long term.

message 777: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 41 comments I have a couple or more on the go, and depending on my mood at the time I chose which one to read.
Currently I have 'The Help' on the go (a present), as well as a Ken Follet and two books of history - I am researching the sequel to Ice King.
I download free audio books so that I can catch up on the books I should have read years ago, during my morning walk :-o)
cheers
Geoff

facinated on the process of research our member writers undertake - so much more than simple writing goes into producing a book-

message 779: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 15 comments I really try to be, but right now I have three books going on at the same time.

message 780: by John (new)

John Steiner (johnsteiner) | 22 comments I'm not only a one-boo-at-a-time reader, but also one at a time writer with very few exceptions. Then again some stories won't let you do anything else until you've discovered the end of the tale.

message 781: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Barnes (thomasbarneswrites) | 9 comments I like reading a bunch of books at once for the variety! Sometimes I'll find themes crossing over the books, which is interesting to say the least.

Same for me. I tend to stick with one thing until I finish it, or discard it.

message 783: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Esquire (MalcolmEsq) | 4 comments Usually I'm a one book at a time reader when it comes to fiction.

There is no way that I could read more than one book and participate in more than one reading/discussion group at a time here - life's too short.

message 784: by Mark (new)

Mark Most often 1 book at a time. Sometimes 2 novels at a time. And if I'm reading non-fiction I always have a novel going at the same time.

message 785: by Penelope (new)

Penelope Marzec (penelopemarzec) | 5 comments I usually read one non-fiction book and one fiction book at the same time. I will only read a portion of the non-fiction book, but I can get very caught up in the fiction book and those are sometimes difficult to set aside.

message 786: by Tamara (new)

Tamara | 8 comments I am definitely a one book at a time reader but I am able to read a book and listen to an audio book during the same time frame.

Mark Stevens (writermarkstevens) | 5 comments One always going in the car (audio CD) and one "book" book always going, too. Yeah, some interesting combinations. Makes it fun.

message 788: by Randa (new)

Randa (randaattya) | 14 comments I used to read 3 or 4 books at a time coz as a gemini person i get bore very quick , & i too like any type of books so when i start to read about history i chose other book about romance & other manga book & so on .But i could't do that with Tolstoy's books 'Anna Karenina' or "War & peace " or any thing to Destoviski too, one time when i was reading 'Anna Karenina' ,i stopped reading n the middle of story & read J.Prufruc by T,S,Eliot , when i back to Anna Karenina again i found my self forget all the names & the events too^___^"hehehe" , i started again from the beging & it was the last time to mix long books with each other. >__<

message 789: by Adriana (last edited Oct 10, 2011 10:14AM) (new)

Adriana Hi! I'm always reading more than book at a time, because they fit my moods differently. Sometimes I'm in the mood for something meaningful, sometimes I feel like reading something light and funny. Sometimes the book I'm reading is too big and I can't carry it around, so I'll pick another book that fits into my bag for those long rides home. I guess that this is also related to my addiction to multitask, but I know that it doesn't work well for many people.

message 790: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenbrauer) | 2 comments No, I read about 10 at a time. I read paper books, my e reader, etc. The only problem is that I sometimes forget the plot and have to go back several pages to pick it up again. Lately, I've been reading a lot of post apocalypse books and decided to change to lighter stuff because those books are really dark and gloomy.

message 791: by Jaidis (new)

Jaidis Shaw (jaidisshaw) | 6 comments I prefer to read one book at a time. It is so hard for me to squeeze in time to read and I find that if I try reading multiple books at the same time it takes me longer. I just read one, finish it and then move on to the next.

message 792: by KOMET (new)

KOMET | 868 comments I'm a very voracious and ecletic, though discriminating, reader (as anyone will readily discern from peeking at my profile). Thus, I tend to read from 7 to 9 books at more or less the same time.

Presently, I'm reading the following 3 books ---

1) Madame Depardieu and the Beautiful Strangers by Antonia Quirke

Madame Depardieu and the Beautiful Strangers by Antonia Quirke

2) A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin

A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin

3) The Road Home by Max Arthur

The Road Home by Max Arthur

Of that number, I should be finished with 2 of them in a matter of a few days, as I'm already halfway through both books.

message 793: by Sabine (new)

Sabine Reed (sabineareed) I can only read one book at a time...but do read magazines in between.

message 794: by Farrah (new)

Farrah I am on avg a four book at a time reader plus a few mags and an audio book. Unless it is a series that has my undivided attention.

message 795: by Tim (new)

Tim Hodkinson (timhodkinson) | 0 comments I have to admit I'm very much "one at a time", but thats because when i start a book I really like I have to keep going til its read. Technology is changing things for me though: I've evolved into a 1 e-book, 1 physical book and 1 audio book at the same time, though never more than 1 of each yet.

message 796: by Terri (new)

Terri Edwards (teresaluvsbooks) | 6 comments Adriana wrote: "Hi! I'm always reading more than book at a time, because they fit my moods differently. Sometimes I'm in the mood for something meaningful, sometimes I feel like reading something light and funny...."

Yes, this is what I do! I have one I keep at work, and usually 2 to 3 on my bedside table. Harry Potter is my go-to "comfort" book that I'll pick up if I'm stressed or sad, and I usually have a classic going; right now it's The Moonstone and Frankenstein. Wish I could read just one at a time but I get bored easily so it's good for me to be able to switch, and I can manage it pretty well.

message 797: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Brewer (nancybrewer) | 12 comments I agree. I keep several books going at the same time. It is as easy for me as watching different things on TV, which I do very little. Frankenstein, is also one of my all time favorites. I have even been to England to the house were Mary Shelley wrote the book. As an author, I find it fun to research the lives of the authors I love.

Alright I just took stock of my bedside cupboard and realised I was talking nonsense. this is obviously what I want to think i do, but it looks like I've a couple of genre books on the go, not 1 but 2 audiobooks (one I can't stop listening to and an alternative to stop me rushing right through to the end before the end of the month) and then a couple of non-fiction books as well- a book on pagan celtic britain and one on medieval warfare. I'm also reading John Barbour's "the Brus" as research for my next novel. I dont' know what you would describe that as: Its 14th century epic poetry in Scots.

message 799: by Pierre (new)

Pierre Rooyen (httpwwwgoodreadscompierre) | 27 comments I currently have 12 novels open on my Kindle and I'm not reading any of them because I don't like them.

Now what do I do?

There is no hope for me.

message 800: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Brewer (nancybrewer) | 12 comments I always try to finish a book once I start it. If for no other reason than out of respect for the author. I know it is a long way fom "once upon a time" to "the end." Just me I suppose, sort of like your mother always saying, "Clean your plate" it makes me feel better. ha ha
