Dan in AZ | 2960 comments 1. The Silver Swan, Benjamin Black. Good writing, but not really my kind of book.
2. A Night Too Dark, Dana Stabenow. Still one of my favorite series.
3. Keeper, Greg Rucka. My first Atticus Kodiak.
4. The Lock Artist, Steve Hamilton. A really different kind of book. Flashbacks usually aren't my fav, but Hamilton does a good job here. Best of the month for its originality.

we are on the same book wavelength -- I will pick up The Lock Artist: A Novel at the library this weekend and am on the last CD of A Night Too Dark: A Kate Shugak Novel

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments The Lock Artist was a nice change for Hamilton. I like his style, but his series was growing long in the tooth.

ITA Dan - Kate is an awesome character. I'd love to see her write more of the Liam Campbell series too though.

Cheryl | 547 comments I read The Lock Artist in February. It was different, but I think it was one of his best.

Can't be a bad thing to be on the same wave length as you, Ann, when it comes to books.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments Aww, Dan:
That is so sweet! I'll have to delay getting The Locke Artist. (and dropping off A Night Too Dark) They closed all of the libraries today and tomorrow due to the flooding in middle TN. Our county has received 13.5 inches of rain since Saturday morning - a record for two days and almost what we should get in the entire month.

We had the same thing happen here. It was epic, I got more than 10 inches of rain. Sherry was stranded on an island that used to be Mystic.

Donnajo | 4354 comments We had rain during the night and I think already it's stopped. Spoke to my sister and they only got the rain this morning. But they are still saying rain today and tomorrow. Hope everyone stays safe and inside if there is flooding. I know how it was around here last time and one supermarket I sometimes go to that shopping centers alot of the places still haven't reopened and the ones that did you really don't want to go over there with all the construction they are doing trying to fix the other stores.

Nasty stuff all that flooding you've had. They've had in western KY, too, but so far not where my folks are.

The weather around the country has been really amazing for the last six months or so, and it's just coming into tornado and hurricane season. Hope everyone continues to be safe and sound.

Yikes - the Mystic clip showed way, way too much water and so very fast moving - terribly dangerous. - I must have missed hearing about it. I hope that it was not as destructive as it looked. Echoing the wish that all stay safe and dry with the odd weather that has been wreaking havoc like these events.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments I went over to that neighborhood the next day. Most of the houses survived, but the earth was scarred down to rock. There were no driveways, topsoil, gardens, and in many cases, bridges and roads. We are detouring everywhere these days.

message 14: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 4517 comments i was watching the news this morning about the flooding in nashville. reminded me of what our area looked like. a mall about 40 min from here was completely underwater..and barry is right- there are still detours in many places. one of the roads near me is still closed. we were very lucky- no flooding and no damage.

message 15: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments Water just isn't easy to get rid of once it is out of normal bounds, is it? I still had to detour this morning to get to work, and there are many who have that much much harder than I do.
The scary thing is the untold number of homes completely underwater or under very deep water; and the nineteen deaths so far in the state, ten in my county. I am very afraid there may be more as the houses and cars emerge from the water. The state of the roads is similar to yours -- shaky and will take months if not years to recover.

Brakedrum | 1203 comments Horrible to see the film on the news. Wishing all of you in the area to stay safe and dry. Has this flooding hit near Chatanooga? I have distant relatives near there.

message 17: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I really hate to see all the flooding in TN. Have been lucky that this hasn't hit where my folks are in eastern KY. They're quite prone to flooding there, too. I can recall some really bad ones when I was a kid.

message 18: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments Lorraine:
I don't think so Lorraine. The storm dumped most of the water between Jackson TN (a bit east of Memphis) and Nashville, and to the east for another county - but I don't think that far over as Chattanooga. The Federal disaster area is for counties in middle Tennessee, though they did say aide may be requested for other counties.

I can remember some bad ones from when I was a kid too. No flood is a good flood. I am glad your parents are dry and safe.
This one is big especially for the amount of destruction in newer developed housing and business park areas that used to be farmland or wetlands and so sadly for the losses of life.
