Has anyone seen the first? Any good? I fear it's a little too steampunk for my taste...

But the second is coming out in 2012:

My favorite Sherlock Holmes pastiche movie is the one with Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley:

I've not seen the first but heard it wasn't that bad - but definitely not like I would think a Sherlock Holmes movie would be.

Thanks for the tip on the Michael Caine/Ben Kingsley movie - hadn't heard of that one but love them both so will look it up on netflix!!! :)

It's a spoof of the Sherlock Holmes story... and Caine and Kingsley are both very funny!

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9981 comments I saw Sherlock Holmes with Downey and Law and I liked it. The plot and acting were all good. That said, this is not the Sherlock Holmes character played by Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett (my two favorites). I just put those out of my mind and enjoyed the movie as a new version of Sherlock Holmes.

Saw the new version over the Memorial Day weekend and did enjoy it.

K.B. Hallman (kbhallman) | 302 comments To say I was disappointed isn't entirely correct, but all in all, I didn't like it. While I did like Jude Law's Watson, I wasn't thrilled with Downey Jr.'s Holmes.

I think I would have inverted the parts, actually.

Glad you liked it! A fun romp.

K.B. Hallman (kbhallman) | 302 comments I did, but my husband thought it was a sacrilege. Evidently, for him, Holmes is the Basil Rathbone-type or not at all.

I found it to be brilliant. Robert Downey Jr is fantastic as Sherlock - very quirky and strange, and Jude Law is great as the exasperated Watson. I can't wait for the second. Sherlock is very like House, M.D.

Yes, House is supposed to be Sherlock as a modern medical doctor. He even lives at 221B.

Although I thought the first movie was okay, I had some riffs with it. I thought Rachel McAdams was too cutesy to play Irene, and I also disliked them using Irene as a love interest for Sherlock. And although I enjoyed Mark Strong, I thought his character was too cartoonish.

As for the two heros, I thought both Downey Jr. and Law did a job well-done. They had good chemistry and were believable as the famous duo.

For Sherlock II, I am most excited about Stephen Fry being cast as Mycroft Holmes. That's brilliant casting right there.

Karendenice I'm so excited. I didn't know that they were making a sequel to Sherlock Holmes. Does anyone know when it's coming out?

message 14: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (llooloo) I'm so exited, only 12 more days until it premieres!

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments As soon as that? Cool! I was pleasantly surprised by the first one - wasn't expecting much as I don't rate Ritchie as a director, but it was fun.

Although I confess I am even more excited by this:

Melanie (melaniesurani) | 3 comments just saw the sequel yesterday... very nice! a good movie to get lost in and just enjoy. makes me want to read the stories again.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments I saw A Game of Shadows last week with my son, very enjoyable! They completely ditched the steampunk element, although the weapons were quite modern that was actually a plot point.

message 18: by Sally (new)

Sally | 38 comments I'm going to Game of Shadows today. I can't wait to see it! I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan. I thought Jeremy Brett was by far the most authentic Holmes. I was afraid I would not like Robert Downey Jr as Holmes but I ended up loving the first movie. I especially liked the depiction of Victorian era London. It was amazing to see Tower Bridge under construction! I'm looking forward to seeing Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments Enjoy, Sally! I agree about Jeremy Brett - along with Edward Hardwicke rescuing Watson from the damage done to him by being portrayed as a buffoon so often, those were superb shows. That said, I do have a very soft spot for the old Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce films, that I grew up watching on TV.

I loved the first -- my daughter saw the second and said it was good, but not as good as the first. I was thinking of taking my son, he's nearly 11 -- probably tomorrow after church because today is already packed.

Harlow Drake (harlow_drake) | 18 comments Hi everyone, I would never in a million years have thought Robert Downey, Jr. could pull off Sherlock Holmes. But not only does he do it, he does it brilliantly. I saw the first one and hope to see the second one next weekend. Happy 2012 folks!
